A Proposal for a Typological Reading of Daniel 11
This work is embargoed by the author until 5/31/2024.This dissertation argues that Daniel 11 is a typological prophecy and, thus, it should be read typologically. While agreeing that Daniel 11:36–45 does not fit the life of Antiochus IV in a strictly literal way, contra the scholarly consensus, this dissertation argues that Daniel 11:21–35 is not strictly literally true of Antiochus IV either. Discrepancies between the prophecy and historical accounts about Antiochus IV exist in both Daniel 11:36–45 and 11:21–35. However, the discrepancies between Daniel 11 and the historical accounts do not necessarily prove that Daniel gets history wrong. Rather, they are common characteristics of biblical typology. In Daniel 11, they signify that Antiochus IV typifies those who come after him (and also includes those who come before him). The study also shows that discrepancies between the prophecy/promise and the initial fulfillment is a feature of prophetical typology. The discrepancies do not negate the initial fulfillment, which is confirmed by Scripture; rather, they point to future fulfillment(s), which will also be affirmed by later biblical texts. The multiple fulfillments do not fulfill the type at the same level, but they all fulfill the same type that is promised/prophesied.
Chapter 1 reviews the scholarly interpretation of Daniel 11 and assesses the strengths and weaknesses of each interpretation. Chapter 2 briefly surveys the history from Cyrus the Great to Antiochus IV. Chapter 3 studies two OT passages (2 Sam 7:1216; Isa 7:14), concluding that both passages should be interpreted typologically, thus providing a model for a typological interpretation of Daniel 11. Chapters 4 and 5 are devoted to the interpretation of Daniel 11, beginning with verse-by-verse commentary. Chapter 4 allots a separate section to discuss the relationship between Daniel 11 and the so-called “Akkadian Prophecies.” While Daniel 11 bears stylistic similarities with the “Akkadian Prophecies,” it differs from these Akkadian texts in other ways. After the verse-by-verse study of Daniel 11, chapter 5 then compares Daniel 11 and the OT passages (2 Sam 7:12–16; Isa 7:14) and proposes a typological reading of Daniel 11. Chapter 6 summarizes the dissertation and provides implications of the study, which concludes with a proposal for a tentative definition of typological prophecy/promise
Physical dance performance: An investigation into the development of a performance technique based on the integration of certain Korean dance technique and contemporary Western styles of dance and physical theatre
This thesis was submitted for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy and awarded by Brunel University, 04/10/2001.This development of a performer practice that integrates elements of traditional Korean dance technique and Western forms of physical theatre and contemporary dance is based on an approach to internal understanding and external execution. Central to the work is the concept of body energy, or Ki. This ancient Eastern term is translated into a contemporary practice that enables a performer to engage mental and physical training. Breath and the use of breath in performing are the principal means of achieving this level of engagement

U.S. trade policy towards developing countries
The United States has often been criticized for protectionist measures taken against developing country products. Yet, average agricultural protection has reemained practically nil in the U.S. over time, while rising in the European Common Market (E.C.M) and, even more, Japan. It further appears that manufactured imports from developing countries have increased much more rapidly, and reached higher levels, in the U.S. than in the E.C.M and, in particular, Japan. The U.S.-Japan comparisons for manufactured goods do not conform to the data on the extent of nontariff barriers, as measured by the share of imports from the developing countries which are subject to such trade barriers. The solution to the puzzle lies in part in the inadequacies of data on the share of imports subject to nontariff measures for gauging the protective effects of such measures and in part in the reliance on formal measures of protection in the United States as against the informal measures in Japan. More generally, one may explain the results obtained by reference to the openness of the U.S. market that has generally been more hospitable to imports from developing countries than have the markets of other industrial countries, particularly Japan.Poverty Assessment,Trade and Regional Integration,TF054105-DONOR FUNDED OPERATION ADMINISTRATION FEE INCOME AND EXPENSE ACCOUNT,Environmental Economics&Policies,Trade Policy
Daily Reflections (Meditations) on the Scriptures from the Roman Catholic Lectionary.
Today's scriptures are about repentance and God's love and compassion. In the book of Jonah, God tells Jonah (a second time) to go to the city of Nineveh (which Jonah despises). There Jonah preaches to the people that God is going to destroy them for their wicked ways. And the people, from the king on down, repent and fast, asking for God's forgiveness. The psalmist offers a contrite and humble heart to the Lord. Asking the Lord to "Thoroughly wash me from my guilt and of my sin cleanse me." In Luke, Jesus is frustrated with the people. Christ warns of God's judgment. The people want a magic show. Jesus says, "Here I am. I am greater than Solomon or Jonah." The Son of God is standing right in front of them. The people don't see him. The people want a sign.||I recently read an exchange between Sam Harris and a young, Christian gentleman. Mr. Harris stated that he had written down a 30 digit number and hidden it in his desk. He wanted the Christian gentleman to pray to God, learn what the number was, relate the number to Mr. Harris and, if it was correct, then Sam would believe in God. The exchange made me angry and sad. It was mocking and lacking in respect. Sam Harris is the author of Letter to a Christian Nation. Sam, along with Richard Dawkins, the author of The God Delusion, is currently on the bestseller list with books that ridicule believers and view religion as the root of all evil. These guys are about as subtle as a hand grenade. There once was a time when identifying yourself as an atheist was a badge of courage. You were an intellectual, an individual, bucking the system and running the risk of being burned at the stake. Nowadays it usually means you are simply intellectually lazy. You don't care or don't want to ask questions about the existence of God or the purpose of life. And your criticism of religion, instead of getting you burned at the stake, gets you on the New York Times best seller list. It's not that I don't know any other atheists. There are several in my family. It's just that I've never met an atheist who is so in-your-face about faith or one who blames all the world's ills on religion. Most atheists I have known may have viewed me as wrong or misguided, but they treated me with tolerance and respect. I viewed them as missing a wonderful gift in life. I figured they weren't asking the right questions about God, life, meaning or purpose and felt I should pray for them.|I love the book of Jonah. First, it's very short. Second, there are more life lessons in this book than you can shake a stick at. And Jonah has one for me. Jonah hates the Ninevites. He absolutely despises them. He gives them God's message. They repent and God spares them. And Jonah is furious. Why in the world would God spare Nineveh? These people are horrible. Why would God show love or compassion to them? And the Lord lets Jonah know that even though the Ninevites don't know about God, he still cares for them. Kind of an amazing message.|There are so many people who do not know Christ. Instead of being angry with them, I should be praying for them. I should be an ambassador for Christ. I should be modeling Christ's love. Christ makes it quite clear that when he says to love our neighbor, he is not just saying love people who believe in Jesus. We are to love people who do not know Christ. Sometimes that may not be easy. My prayer today is for guidance, tolerance and love for those who have not yet met Christ
Dead bugs do tell tales: implications of a new fossil assassin bug (Heteroptera: Reduviidae) for the evolutionary history and systematics of an extant lineage
The following thesis comprises three parts: (1) the description of a new fossil assassin bug, (2) the use of this newly described taxon to inform the phylogenetic history of the family, and (3) a survey of previously-described extinct taxa compiled into the first taxonomic catalog of fossil Reduvioidea.
The first chapter presents a new Eocene (Ypresian) fossil assassin bug, Aphelicophontes iuddorum gen. et sp. nov. (Reduviidae: Harpactorinae), described from the Green River Formation of Colorado. The specimens informing this description are marked by an extraordinary level of preservation, particularly in external and internal structures of the adult male genitalia. Following the description, discussions of phylogenetic signal and the implications for the systematics and evolutionary history of the group are presented.
The second chapter uses Aphelicophontes iuddorum gen. et sp. nov. as a new calibration point in order to re-estimate the divergence dates of Reduvioidea. This analysis also utilizes a new set of fossil calibrations from previous studies. Tree topology is inferred using MrBayes and RAxML, and divergence dates are inferred using BEAST2. Convergence was not reached in the BEAST analysis, resulting in divergence estimates with low levels of support in which the divergence of Reduvioidea from Heteroptera was suggested to be 344 Ma. The potential problems with this and previous divergence estimates are discussed.
To supplement and better justify the description and placement of the new taxon, an annotated taxonomic catalog of the fossil Reduvioidea was compiled; this composes the third chapter of the thesis. This catalog marks the first such compilation for the 48 extinct members of the group and documents additional information such as the taphonomy, age (with references), and type repository for each fossil. Supplementing the catalog proper is a discussion of the subfamilial distribution of fossil reduvioid taxa, with tables enumerating undescribed fossil reduvioid material and fossil species originally but erroneously described in Reduviidae.
The thesis concludes with a general discussion of potential future work involving fossil Reduvioidea.Submission published under a 24 month embargo labeled 'U of I Access', the embargo will last until 2018-05-01The student, Daniel Swanson, accepted the attached license on 2016-04-20 at 14:09.The student, Daniel Swanson, submitted this Thesis for approval on 2016-04-20 at 14:28.This Thesis was approved for publication on 2016-04-20 at 17:10.DSpace SAF Submission Ingestion Package generated from Vireo submission #9376 on 2016-07-07 at 13:50:29Made available in DSpace on 2016-07-07T20:27:53Z (GMT). Defining a US defence diplomacy for Brazil at the beginning of the century
At the beginning of the 1990s, the US military was apparently considered to be a significant threat by the Brazilian Armed Forces. Other military establishments in the Hemisphere likewise expressed a lack of confidence, and even a sense of fear, regarding the North Americans. After an ‘opening’ in military relations between Brazil and the United States, directed by General Barry McAfree, commander-in-chief of the US Southern Command (SOUTHCOM) in the mid 1990s, Brazilian military sentiment regarding the US marginally improved. Nevertheless, by the end of the 1990s and the beginning of this Century, the Brazilian Armed Forces again felt threatened by the unilateralism of the US military.
This work examines the the concept of ‘defense diplomacy’ and the process by which the Clinton Administration initiated an experiment in conjunction with the National Defense University (Fort Leslie McNair, Washington, DC), at the request of the Deputy Assitant Secretary of Defense for Western Hemisphere Affairs, that established between 1999 and 2001 a broader understanding of possible US defense diplomacy for the subsequent seven years. I was an invited participant in this experiment, along with more than two dozen North American and Latin American academics, including Brazilians, the aim of which was to complete a proposal under contract with the Defense Department. Although it was ended soon after the Bush Administration began, this experiment, and the broader concept of ‘defense diplomacy,’ may well have represented an important option for future hemispheric military relations
