    Future of work – apprehensions and excitement of management graduates

    The study explores the perceptions of graduates on their employability and future of work, in light of the challenges thrown upon by new vicissitudes in the work environment. The study intends to assess the preparedness of management graduates in facing the challenges and uncertainties of the actual job market. Semi - structured and informal interviews with 65 management graduates from UK, Canada, Italy and India. The thematic analysis uncovered the concerns and areas to develop for management graduates regarding their future employability perceptions. We benefited from a unique opportunity to capture the views and experience of graduates who are undergoing management education during this ambiguous period. Three major themes were developed on how to develop oneself for an ambiguous future of work which includes, Psychological strengths, Skill enhancement and Future mindset. The study also unearthed the major focus areas for better employability from a graduate perspective. Practical contribution comes from strategies to prepare university graduates for sustainable careers. From a global approach this is one among the first studies to look into the graduate perspective of their preparedness for future work

    Speech Perception Assessment Practices Among Audiologists in India: A Preliminary Survey

    Assessment of speech perception is an important aspect of clinical audiology practice. The profession of audiology is about 50 years old in India. However, there is no published information available about speech perception assessment practices implemented by audiologists in the country. The present study is a small scale survey of audiologists involving 59 respondents working in various settings in India. The survey was conducted via e-mail and social networking website. Analysis indicates that about 70% respondents conduct speech testing routinely, though only about 50% test through audition-only and through the audiometer. The results indicate considerable variability in aspects such as presentation level, speech stimuli and tests used, setting used for testing, and Signal-to-Noise Ratio used for testing in noise. 85% respondents prefer presenting stimuli through monitored live voice for children. Word Recognition Score is the most commonly used measure, while HINT and SPIN are the tests commonly used for testing in noise. A majority of respondents feel the need for developing language-independent test material for both children and adults. Reportedly, the major impediments in conducting speech testing include non-availability of standard sound treated rooms, lack of access to sophisticated audiometers, lack of time and non-availability of standard test material in the various languages spoken in the country. The main limitation of the survey is that 73% of the respondents were from western India and hence the results cannot be generalized to the population of audiologists across the country. Despite its limitations, this study may be considered as a preliminary survey providing valuable information about speech perception assessment practices among audiologists in India

    Data privacy in knowledge discovery

    This thesis addresses data privacy in various stages of extracting knowledge embedded in databases. Advances in computer networking and database technologies have enabled the collection and storage of vast quantities of data. Legal and ethical considerations might require measures to protect an individual's privacy in any use or release of the data. In this thesis, we address the problem of preserving privacy in the two following cases: (1) in distributed knowledge discovery; (2) in situations where the output of a data mining algorithm could itself breach privacy. We present results in two different models, namely secure multiparty computation (SMC) and differential privacy. The first part of the thesis presents privacy preserving protocols in the SMC model. Secure multiparty computation involves the collaborative computation of functions based on inputs from multiple parties. The privacy goal is to ensure that all parties receive only the final output without any party learning anything beyond what can be inferred from the output. Within this framework we address the problem of preserving privacy in the preprocessing and the data mining stages of knowledge discovery in databases. For the preprocessing stage, we present private protocols for the imputation of missing data in a dataset that is shared between two parties. For the data mining stage, we introduce the notion of arbitrarily partitioned data that generalizes both horizontally and vertically partitioned data. We present a privacy-preserving protocol for k-means clustering of arbitrarily partitioned data. We also develop a new simple k-clustering algorithm that was designed to be converted into a communication-efficient protocol for private clustering. The second part of the thesis deals with privacy in situations where the output of a data mining algorithm could itself breach privacy. In this setting, we present private inference control protocols in the SMC model for On-line Analytical Processing systems. In the differential privacymodel, the goal is to provide access to a statistical database while preserving the privacy of every individual in the database, irrespective of any auxiliary information that may be available to the database client.     The dangerous idea is that school reform, in India in particular, but across the world too, is impossible. Changing education, at the systemic level or at the institutional or school level, or educating teachers and school leaders in change can be classified as largely first order change - that of school improvement, which involves doing more of the same but doing it better (where the focus is on efficiency) and that of school re-structuring, which involves re-organising components and responsibilities (where the focus is on effectiveness). Geetha Narayanan is Principal Investigator with Project Vision at the Centre for Education Research Training and Development (CERTAD) within the Srishti School of Art Design and Technology in Bangalore, India. It has been recorded in well sorted sand with grain size ranging mostly from 295 to 592 µm Remarks. This species has been recorded by Rajan & Nair (1979) from Kerala in their ecological work, along with other gastrotrichs species and meiofauna. There is no drawing and other taxonomic data of this species provided by them or any other author from India.     Perception of Marathi consonant manner contrasts in children with and without hearing impairment

    &lt;p class="abstract"&gt;&lt;strong&gt;Background:&lt;/strong&gt; Very few published studies have reported phoneme contrasts in children with and without hearing impairment in Indian languages. The present study is aimed at comparing perception of manner contrasts in 6 to 8 year old Marathi children with normal hearing and those with hearing impairment using hearing aids and cochlear implants&lt;span lang="EN-IN"&gt;. &lt;/span&gt;&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p class="abstract"&gt;&lt;strong&gt;Methods:&lt;/strong&gt; Two hundred 6 to 8 year olds participated across three groups: 106 with normal hearing (NH), 47 with hearing aids (HA) and 47 with cochlear implants (CI). Perception of four consonant manner contrasts was assessed using a four-alternative, forced choice picture-pointing task using recorded minimal pairs with CVC or CVCV words: a) Stop vs. Fricative; b) Stop vs. Nasal; c) Stop vs. Affricate and d) Aspiration&lt;span lang="EN-IN"&gt;.  &lt;/span&gt;&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p class="abstract"&gt;&lt;strong&gt;Results:&lt;/strong&gt; All NH participants obtained ceiling scores for stop vs. fricative and stop vs. nasal contrasts. NH participants performed significantly better than participants with CI on all contrasts. Performance of HA participants was more variable and significantly poorer than the CI participants. Children implanted at or before 4 years of age and those using CI for more than 2.5 years performed consistently better on all contrasts as compared to those implanted after 4 years of age and using it for less than 2.5 years. Children fitted with HA at or after 2.5 years of age performed consistently better than those fitted before 2.5 years of age. Participants with average hearing aided thresholds 45 dB HL or lower (better) performed better than those with average aided thresholds above 45 dB HL&lt;span lang="EN-IN"&gt;. &lt;/span&gt;&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p class="abstract"&gt;&lt;strong&gt;Conclusions:&lt;/strong&gt; Normative data on perception of various manner contrasts in Marathi is generated. Phoneme perception skills of children with NH are significantly better than those of children with CI and HA&lt;span lang="EN-IN"&gt;.&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/p&gt;</jats:p

    Exploring the potential of <i>Lindernia ciliata</i>: isolation, characterization, and pharmacological evaluation of its anti-diabetic properties

    We isolated two phytoconstituents using bioassay guided isolation for anti-diabetic property from the hydroalcoholic extract of Lindernia ciliata (Colsm.) Pennell (Family: Linderniaceae). We assessed the anti-diabetic potential using various assays, including the glucose absorption assay, glucose uptake in isolated rat abdominal muscle assay, insulin secretion by RIN-5F cells assay, α-amylase inhibition activity, and DPP-4 inhibition assay. The results from our study indicated that the ethanol and water fractions obtained from the hydroalcoholic extract significantly improved glucose uptake, demonstrating promising anti-diabetic properties. Further investigation led to the isolation of two distinct compounds, LCF-1 (IUPAC name: 2-(3,4-dihydroxyphenyl)-3,5,7-trihydroxy-4H-chromen-4-one) (LCF-1) and LCF-2 (IUPAC name: 3S,10R,13R,17R)-17-[(2R,5R)-5-ethyl-6-methylheptan-2-yl]-10,13-dimethyl-2,3,4,7,8,9,11,12,14,15,16,17-dodecahydro-1H-cyclopenta[a]phenanthren-3-ol). Consequently, our findings suggest that LCF-1 and LCF-2 are two phytoconstituent derived from the hydroalcoholic extract of L. ciliata, could serve as a potential source of anti-diabetic agents. This highlights its suitability for further development in the creation of herbal pharmaceuticals for diabetes treatment.</p

    Comparison of post menopausal voice changes across professional and non-professional users of the voice

    Menopause effects a permanent change in certain body functions, one of them being voice. Moreover, if the voice is used continuously as a part of one’s occupation, this may further impact postmenopausal voice changes. The present study investigated the impact of menopause and professional voice use, and their interaction effect, on the voice. 92 women were classified into reproductive (52) and postmenopausal (40). Each group was divided into Level II (teachers) and Level IV (clerks) of Koufman and Isaacson’s (1991) classification. Acoustic parameters were analyzed using the VisiPitch III software. Aerodynamic parameters were manually calculated. The VHI (Voice Handicap Index) was also included to improve the face validity of the study. Results suggest that Fo, SFo and MPT reduce post menopause while NHR and VTI increase. Some changes are accelerated in teachers as compared to clerks while some are decelerated. VHI scores of teachers are significantly greater than clerks, though not significantly different across menopause. Thus the presence or absence of voice use in one’s profession differentially affects postmenopausal changes. The study has implications in improving the condition of teachers in India, developing norms for menopausal changes and modifying allowable limits for voice recognition systems in future.</jats:p
