    Evaluating levy flight parameters for random searches in a 2D space

Optimality of such random searches has been a topic of extensive research because knowing their optimal parameters may help applied sciences. Viswanathan et al. have shown the inverse-square power law to be the optimal law for such random searches. This thesis explores the capability of the model presented in such that it can be applied to Unmanned Autonomous Vehicles (UAVs). The thesis also identifies the minimum flight length, lmin, as an important factor that needs to be controlled based on the UAV's sensor range.     DPP-4 inhibitory activity and myocardial salvaging effects of Commiphora mukul in experimental diabetes

    Background: Commiphora mukul (Burseraceae) is commonly known as Guggul in Ayurveda. Several studies have reported antidiabetic activity of Commiphora mukul but there are no studies to explore the DPP-4 inhibitory activity and myocardial salvaging effects of Commiphora mukul in setting of diabetes mellitus. The present study was designed to evaluate the cardioprotective efficacy as well as safety of the medicinal plant Commiphora mukul (Guggul) in the experimental model of myocardial infarction co-existing with diabetes.Methods: Diabetes was induced with single dose of streptozotocin (STZ): 45mg/kg ip and myocardial infarction was produced by administering isoproterenol (ISP): (85mg/kg, sc) to rats 24 and 48 h prior to scarification (5th week). After the confirmation of diabetes on 7th day (glucose>200mg/dl), vildagliptin (10 mg/kg) and Commiphora mukul (200 mg/kg) were administered orally from 1st to 5th week (4 weeks). At the end of experimental period, normal control, diabetic-isoproterenol control, vildagliptin and Commiphora mukul group rats were sacrificed for further biochemical investigations as well as histopathological evaluation.Results: Commiphora mukul treatment demonstrated significant antidiabetic as well as myocardial salvaging effects as indicated by restoration of blood glucose, HbA1c and CPK-MB serum DPP-4, hs-CRP levels as compared to diabetic ISP control group. In addition, Commiphora mukul showed significant cardioprotection as indicated by positive correlation between cardiac marker CPK-MB and serum DPP-4. The histopathological assessment of heart, pancreas and biochemical indices of injury confirmed the cardioprotective effects of Commiphora mukul. In addition, Commiphora mukul was found to be safe to the liver and kidney.Conclusions: The natural DPP-4 inhibitor Commiphora mukul demonstrated significant cardioprotective effects in experimental model of myocardial infarction co-existing with diabetes

    A Unified Shell model for Buoyancy-Driven Turbulence

    We construct a unified shell model for stably stratified and convective turbulence. Shell model simulation of stably stratified flow in turbulent regime exhibit Bolgiano-Obukhbov (BO) scaling in which the kinetic energy spectrum varies as k11/5k^{-11/5}. However, simulation of convective turbulence shows Kolmogorov's spectrum. These results are consistent with the direct numerical simulations of Kumar {\em et al.} [Phys. Rev. E {\bf 90}, 023016 (2014)]. We also observe a dual scaling (k11/5k^{-11/5} and k5/3k^{-5/3}) for a limited range of parameters in stably stratified flow

    Objective: The present study was designed to screen the dipeptidyl peptidase-IV (DPP-IV) inhibitory ability of hydroalcoholic extracts of Terminaliaarjuna, Commiphora mukul, Gymnema sylvestre, Morinda citrifolia, and Emblica officinalis and compare their inhibitory activity with the syntheticDPP-IV inhibitors (Sitagliptin and Vildagliptin). The aim of the study was to identifying indigenous sources of DPP-IV inhibitors for the managementof type II diabetes mellitus as alternatives to their synthetic counterparts.Methods: The hydroalcoholic extract of T. arjuna, C. mukul, G. sylvestre, M. citrifolia, E. officinalis and synthetic DPP-IV inhibitors (Sitagliptin andVildagliptin) were tested in vitro for DPP-IV inhibitory activity.Results: The DPP-IV inhibitory activity of synthetic drugs Vildagliptin was found to be 90.42±7.84% and Sitagliptin 84.67±8.21%. The DPP-IVInhibitory activity of T. arjuna was found to be 83.39±7.58%, C. mukul: 92.97± 8.45%, G. sylvestre: 16.98±1.69%, M. citrifolia: 24.64±2.24%, andE. officinalis: 85.95±7.16%. C. mukul extract showed superior inhibitory activity than reference standard drugs (Sitagliptin and Vildagliptin).Conclusion: C. mukul, T. arjuna, and E. officinalis extracts possess significant DPP-IV Inhibitory activity while G. sylvestre and M. citrifolia failed tomarkedly inhibit DPP-IV enzyme.Keywords: Type II diabetes mellitus, Dipeptidyl peptidase-IV inhibitors, Plant extracts, In vitro assay

    With a view to elucidating the stereochemistry of quqqultetrols, components of saponified Commiphora mukul resin, D-lyxo-, L-ribo-, and L-xylo-octadecane-1,2,3,4-tetrols have been synthesised by two different routes. One method starts with D-glyceraldehyde, while the second route is based on the appropriate pentose. The absolute configuration of the natural product guggultetrol-18, has been deduced as D-xylo (2S, 3S, 4R-configuration) by direct comparison with synthetic compounds. Network representativeness and constituency can show how well conditions at those locations represent conditions elsewhere within a larger area containing the network and can be used to help scale-up results over larger regions.
