To ish or not to ish?

    No full text
In English, new adjectives can be coined by adding the suffix -ish. For instance, one can describe someone who acts like Arnold Schwarzenegger as Schwarzeneggerish. This paper investigates how the use of -ish is influenced by text characteristics (genre, formality) and author characteristics (gender, age). We used two corpora, the British National Corpus and the Blog Authorship Corpus. From our analyses of variance (ANOVAs) and logistic regression models, we learned that for the use of -ish it is probably more important what type of text you are writing than who you are. We also concluded that this type of research is seriously hampered by the absence of the kind of metadata needed for our type of research

The Shi arrangement and the Ish arrangement

This paper is about two arrangements of hyperplanes. The first — the Shi arrangement — was introduced by Jian-Yi Shi to describe the Kazhdan-Lusztig cells in the affine Weyl group of type A. The second — the Ish arrangement — was recently defined by the first author who used the two arrangements together to give a new interpretation of the q,t-Catalan numbers of Garsia and Haiman. In the present paper we will define a mysterious "combinatorial symmetry'' between the two arrangements and show that this symmetry preserves a great deal of information. For example, the Shi and Ish arrangements share the same characteristic polynomial, the same numbers of regions, bounded regions, dominant regions, regions with c "ceilings'' and d "degrees of freedom'', etc. Moreover, all of these results hold in the greater generality of "deleted'' Shi and Ish arrangements corresponding to an arbitrary subgraph of the complete graph. Our proofs are based on nice combinatorial labellings of Shi and Ish regions and a new set partition-valued statistic on these regions.

    Self-ish

2014 Spring.Self-ish is a collection of essays surrounding the narrator's relationship to place, community, and family--the family one is born into and the family one chooses to create--and her evolving identity within these spaces. Essays include "The Cottage," which explores how the narrator's loss of innocence and feeling of community within her extended paternal family dissipates in conjunction with the sale of her family's cottage and the divorce of her parents. "Gone" is the story of the narrator's mentally ill and alcoholic father and her struggle to understand and accept him within the space of their sometimes-tumultuous relationship. In "B-Town, Bulgaria," the narrator chronicles her time studying abroad in Blagoevgrad, Bulgaria and the internal changes she experiences throughout her time there. "Misdirection" is a travel narrative that follows the narrator and her study abroad roommate, Kelli, to the Czech Republic as their friendship is tested and ultimately strengthened during their difficult travels. In "Jane," the narrator studies the differences between the relationships of friends and best friends by focusing on the relationship between herself and her best friend, Jane. The final essay, "#selfhelp," is a memoir essay that examines the narrator's relationship to the self-help community and how it both helps and hinders her

Black-ish (Abc: 2014- ): The (Black) American Dream

    No full text
Television series have become a recurring object of study in academia. Scholars have shown that television narratives function as social fables and morality plays about the functioning of society. This study analyzes the series Black-ish from the point of view of its ideological discourse: that is what we are, what we do, and what our objective is when we do it (van Dijk, 2009). Qualitatively speaking, the author has performed a textual analysis (McKee, 2002), showing that neoliberal values predominate in the series. In this regard, in the discussion, she compares the results from other series of the genre and shows the prevailing conservatism in sit-coms.

Polyphony and the anxiety of influence in the fiction of Henry James

James's fiction, especially in the Middle Phase, centres on the figure of the artist and is characterized by, the two interrelated aspects which previous criticism has largely overlooked: the Bakhtinian 'polyphonic' -creation of 'author-thinkers'; and the conflict between ephebes and precursors, for which Harold-Bloom's concept of 'the-anxiety of influence' is the most illuminating model. Polyphony is the narrative mode, and influence is the intra-artistic, theme. These, as the Introduction to the thesis makes clear, are rehearsed in James's inaugural novel, Roderick Hudson. Rowland Mallet is an author-thinker, and his failure is caused by authorial limitations. His monologism -is impaired by his mistaking empathy for the authorial sympathy. Likewise, Hudson's failure does not arise from a mercurial temperament, but from a polyphonic shortcoming: not possessing the power of fiction to contain the fiction of power in, his mentor. And the relationships among the three artists - Gloriani, Hudson and Singleton - perfectly exemplify the Bloomian-theme. It is these two concepts, polyphony and influence, which are the major preoccupation in the Middle Phase; as, the works chosen demonstrate. These are a novella, a novel, and a number of short stories all of which have been unjustifiably neglected. Chapter One, on The Aspern Papers, argues that Tina Bordereau, far from being, the artless victim seen by many critics, actually challenges and defeats the narrator by the very form of her narrative. Her 'realist' discourse undermines his language of 'romance', and shows up its internal unstability. Chapter Two is an extensive study of the critical reception of The Tragic Muse. The most common areas of critical attention have been its contemporary topicality, its relation to previous novels on similar themes, and the possible genealogy of Gabriel Nash. Those have all missed the core of the work. - Chapter Three demonstrates how polyphony and the anxiety of influence make the novel what it really is. Influence arises from the juxtaposition of, and the wrestling between, artistic ephebes and their precursors (Nick and Nash,, Miriam and Madame Carre). The dialogic quality defined by Bakhtin is crucial to the proper, and even-handed, characterization of all, the conflicts in the novel. And since most of James's tales in the eighties and nineties -are about 'masters - and acolytes, the anxiety of influence remains central. Chapter Four is a study of 'The Author of Beltraffiol' and 'The Lesson of the Master'. Again the characters' manipulations are a crucial focus in a way that G6rard Genette's terminology helps to illuminate. The fact that the ephebe is the author-thinker emphasizes the inextricability of the Bakhtinian and the Bloomian in James. Just as polyphony offers a different focus for explicating the poetics of James's fiction; so the ephebal conflict provides the basis for a fresh perception of James's own artistic struggle

Ramp sinusoidal breakdown of epoxy resin under high voltage waveforms at different frequencies

    No full text
In this study, the immediate time to breakdown for pure epoxy resin is measured by applying a ramp sinusoidal voltage signal at certain frequency (50Hz, 500Hz and 5000Hz) until breakdown occurs. The HV testing procedures, epoxy resin sample and experimental set-up preparation and Weibull analysis of obtained results are elaborated. The experiments were carried out on epoxy samples with the thickness between 0.1mm and 0.2mm and the thickness was divided into three groups for more accurate statistical analysis.Green Open Access added to TU Delft Institutional Repository ‘You share, we take care!’ – Taverne project https://www.openaccess.nl/en/you-share-we-take-care Otherwise as indicated in the copyright section: the publisher is the copyright holder of this work and the author uses the Dutch legislation to make this work public.High Voltage Technology Grou
