Distribution of surfactant proteins in type II pneumocytes of newborn, 14-day old, and adult rats: an immunoelectron microscopic and stereological study
Surfactant proteins (SP) have an important impact on the function of the pulmonary surfactant. In contrast to humans, rat lungs are immature at birth. Alveolarization starts on postnatal day 4. Little is known about the distribution of SP during postnatal alveolarization. By immunoelectron microscopy, we studied the distribution of SP-A, SP-D, SP-B, and precursors of SP-C in type II pneumocytes before, near the end and after alveolarization and in mature lungs. We determined the subcellular volume fractions and the relative labeling index to obtain information about preferential labeling of compartments and non-randomness of labeling. Independently of alveolarization, the overall cellular distribution of SP was non-random. A preferential labeling for SP-A and SP-D was found in small vesicles and multivesicular bodies (mvb). SP-B and precursors of SP-C were localized in mvb and lamellar bodies (lb). There are no postnatal changes in labeling for all three SP in these compartments. Labeling intensity for SP-B in lb increased in close correlation with a significant increase in the volume fractions of lb during alveolarization. Our results support the concept that postnatal alveolarization in rat lungs is associated with significant increases in the SP-B content in lb and volume fraction of lb in type II pneumocytes. Electron microscopy and microcalorimetry of the postnatal rat heart (Rattus norvegicus)
The interplay of ultrastructure and tissue metabolism was examined in neonatal, infant and adult rat hearts by electron microscopy and microcalorimetry. Morphometry was used to determine parameters of oxygen diffusion capacity (distance between capillaries and mitochondria, capillary surface density) and oxidative metabolic capacity (mitochondrial volume fraction). Thin slices and large samples of living tissue were examined calorimetrically to quantify aerobic metabolism and ischemia tolerance, respectively. After birth, rat hearts grow in parallel to body mass and show characteristics of cellular hypertrophy. Capillary surface density increases from neonatal to infant rats, and decreases to an intermediate value in adult rats. The distance between capillaries and mitochondria shows no significant changes throughout postnatal development. Mitochondrial volume fraction increases continuously until adulthood. The specific aerobic tissue metabolic rate is higher in the neonatal than in the infant and adult rat. However, the ischemic decline in metabolic rate is much slower in the neonatal rat, reflecting an elevated hypoxia tolerance. In conclusion, the neonatal rat heart exhibits a high metabolic rate despite a low mitochondrial volume fraction. The subsequent structural rearrangements can be interpreted as long-term adaptations to the increased postnatal workload and may contribute to the progressive loss of hypoxia tolerance. Progressive loss of myocardial contractile function despite unimpaired coronary blood flow after cardiac surgery
Objective Mild to moderate transient contractile dysfunction is frequently observed after cardiac surgery on cardiopulmonary bypass (CPB) but may also lead to low-cardiac-output (LCO) failure especially in patients with unstable angina, and is often referred to represent myocardial stunning. Whether time course of contractile dysfunction after cardiac surgery is similar to that of myocardial stunning was investigated in pigs. Methods After baseline measurements of systemic hemodynamics (micromanometry), myocardial contractile function (sonomicrometry), cardiac output and coronary flow (ultrasonic probe), CPB was instituted. Control animals (n=7) were weaned after 3 h from CPB. In LCO animals (n=8), global ischemia was induced for 10 min by aortic crossclamping, followed by 1 h of cardioplegic cardiac arrest. After declamping and reperfusion, CPB was terminated after a total of 3 h. Measurements were repeated at 15 min, 4 h and 8 h after CPB. Systemic TNFalpha-plasma concentrations were measured (ELISA) and left ventricular biopsies were analyzed with respect to myocardial TNFalpha (immunohistochemistry) and irreversible cellular damage (light/electron microscopy). Results Contractile function decreased in LCO (75+/-12%) and control (83+/-17%) at 15 min compared to baseline (p<0.05). Thereafter, contractile function remained unchanged in control, but progressively decreased in LCO (52+/-12% at 4 h; 36+/-5% at 8 h; p<0.05). Coronary flow remained unchanged in both groups. Cardiac output progressively decreased to 2.8+/-0.9 l/min at 8 h in the LCO group compared to baseline (5.9+/-1.1 l/min, p<0.05) and control (5.7+/-1.4 l/min, p<0.05). There was no evidence for myocardial infarction. TNFalpha-plasma concentrations and myocardial TNFalpha-staining were increased at 8 h after CPB in the LCO group compared to baseline and control (p<0.05). Conclusions The progressive pattern of myocardial dysfunction apart from ongoing ischemia after cardiac surgery suggested underlying mechanisms at least partially different from those of myocardial stunning
Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
Variations on the Author
“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis
We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts
We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued
use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation
counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. It is argued that increasingly available digital full text research papers make it possible for citation analysis studies to go beyond what the ISI databases have directly supported and to employ more

We have done our best to complete the author checklist relating to the use of animals in the hut study. Note that the objective for the hut study was to evaluate the IRS treatment applications for residual efficacy against Anopheles mosquitoes, including the local An. coluzzii mosquito population. Cows were only used to attract mosquitoes into the huts and no tests were carried out directly on the cows. The author checklist is intended for use with studies where experiments are carried out on animals, which is why we have had such difficulty in completing this for the hut study, as many of the questions do not relate to how the cows were used
