Preparing pre-service teachers for English language learners with a community-based service learning project

    No full text
Despite considerable number of English language learners (ELLs) in mainstream classrooms, very few of the teachers are adequately trained to work with ELLs (Hutchinson, 2013). This disparity leads to many problems such as ELLs struggle with the demands of academic life in mainstream classrooms due to their teachers' lack of knowledge, skills, and positive disposition towards ELLs. Hence, mainstream teachers' awareness of ELLs' experiences, knowledge, and skills is critical. One important action for increasing the teacher awareness is to prepare linguistically responsive teachers. This qualitative study aimed to explore the pre-service teachers' (the PSTs) experiences in a course offered at a graduate school of education at a US state university. Throughout the 15-week semester, the PSTs discussed the Funds of Knowledge approach, communicative strategies, and language and culture. They also met the community members who were ELLs and helped them practice English for eight weeks. The primary data sources were observations of the seminar portion and service-learning project, interviews with six PSTs and six ELLs, documents such as PSTs' course assignments, and pre- and post-course surveys. The findings revealed that this course helped the PSTs develop a positive orientation towards ELLs, gave them a chance to reflect on their own beliefs about instruction, and enhanced their use of conversation strategies while interacting with the ELLs. The ELLs reported to feel more confident in their conversation skills after their interaction with the PSTs. The study adds to the literature showing the importance of providing the PSTs with the opportunities to interact with the community members coming from diverse backgrounds. Further research can be conducted to see whether the PSTs retain and implement the information they had learned from this experience.Ed.D.Includes bibliographical referencesby Tuba Arabaci Atlama

AND SYNCHRONISATION OF REPRODUCTION IN SEA BASS (Dicentrarchus labrax) AND SEA BREAM (Spams aurata) BROODSTOCKS BY USING LONG-ACTING LHRHa PREPARATION ARABACI, Muhammed Ph D in Aquaculture Product Supervisor. Ass. Prof. Haşmet ÇA?IRGAN ABSTRACT Ovulation and spawning were induced in gilthead sea bream, Spams aurata and sea bass Dicentrarachus labrax broodstocks using a Water in Oil (W/O) emulsion of [(B)D-Ser6, Pro9-Net], an agonist of LHRH, for determining the effects of this treatment on spawning profiles, the timing of spawning, daily egg production, and the rates of viable eggs, non- viable eggs and non- fertilised eggs. Gilthead sea bream females bearing yolky follicles were injected once with 30, 60, 90 ug/kg (body weight) of LHRHa emulsified with Freund's incomplete adjuvant. All treated females started to spawn after 48 to 70h. The mean daily production ofviable eggs ranged between 104xl02 and 183xl02 eggs/kg. The embryonic viability was equivalent to that of control fishes which exposed to the same environmental conditions with treatment fishes. There was, however, a significantly (PO.01) higher egg production in the LHRHa-treated fishes, but not among LHRHa- treated fishes. The same method was also applied to sea bass females bearing yolky follicles. Sea bass females were injected once with 40, 80 ug/kg (body weight) of LHRHa emulsified with Freund's incomplete adjuvant. All treated sea bass females started to spawn after 69 to 70 h. The mean daily production of viable eggs ranged between 91xl02 and 102xl02 eggs/kg. The embryonic viability was equivalent to that of control fishes which exposed to the same environmental conditions with treatment fishes. There was, however, a significantly (P<0.05) higher egg production in the LHRHa-treated fishes, but not among LHRHa-treated fishes. As a result of this research, LHRHa which is emulsified in Freund's incomplete adjuvant can be used succesfully for providing of synchronisation between broodstocks and for inducing ovulation and spawning in sea bass and sea bream without causing to negative effects on egg quality in hatcheries. Key words; Sparus aurata, Dicentrarchus labrax, induced spawning, LHRHa, emulsion, synchronisation of spawning, egg quality

Lactococcosis, yersiniosis, listenollosis and cold water disease agents are frequently observed in Turkey as bacterial fish pathogens. Bacterial fish pathogens have high mortality prognosis, causing significant economic losses for the businesses. Use of molecular methods in substantiation of disease factors became prevalent in recent years. These methods have a significant role in fast diagnosis and early treatment of fish diseases. In the present study, 8 rainbow trout samples were obtained from each of 19 rainbow trout farms located in Van province, Turkey and registered with Food, Agriculture and Livestock Ministry. Total genomic DNAs were isolated from kidney tissues of sampled rainbow trout. Obtained DNAs were analyzed with real-time PCR there is/not (+/-) analysis using disease specific primer pairs for each disease. Molecular diagnosis of lactococcosis pathogen in 4 farms out of 19 rainbow trout farms active in Van province, and yersiniosis pathogen in 1 farm were made as a result real-time PCR analysis. Listenollosis and cold water pathogens were not molecularly observed. Results of the present study demonstrated that the region was safe for bacterial fish pathogens of cold water disease and listenollosis, which are observed frequently in Turkey, and there were deficiencies in preventive measures against lactococcosis and yersiniosis and fish transfer was a significant reason for the prevalence these diseases

Lactococcus garvieae is one of the main pathogenic agents in rainbow trout farms in Turkey. Twenty-two L. garvieae isolates obtained from different regions in Turkey were evaluated phenotypically in the study. in all isolates, cream colored, bright, round and S-type colonies with smooth margins were seen in TSA medium. They were alive during native examination without movement. It was observed that morphologically all isolates were Gram (+), alpha-hemolytic (BA), oxidase and catalase negative and were reproduced under 21, 37 and 45 degrees C temperatures with 0-6.5 % NaCl salinity. As a result of the examination of biochemical properties with API Rapid ID 32 Strep test, it was observed that 2 L. garvieae isolates were different from other isolates in respect of sucrose utilization. 1 and 19 number isolates were negative for sucrose whereas other isolates gave positive results. 1 number isolate was different from other isolates based on maltose profile. While isolate 22 was maltose negative, the other isolates gave positive results. According to phenotypic differences, all isolates used in the study were classified as three different groups.Van Yuzuncu Yil UniversityYuzuncu Yil University [2015-VF-B179]This research was supported by Research Fund of the Van Yuzuncu Yil University. In the following paper we will examine and look at the political and economic factors that unfold in Turkey. In order for us to illustrate the tensions that unfold we find it necessary to asses and examine when a nation stands between its political visions and national values. Turkey is currently is in a position we find it therefore effective to include the Transitology-theorie to explain the transition between old regime and the new by carefully pointing out their differences so that we illustrate the political changes that have occurred. Furthermore we use a series of macroeconomic concepts, instruments and statistics, to make analysis. These will help us to understand how the progressive economic developments in Turkey have been used as an instrument by the AKP government to implement the policy measures. Our end conclusion is hence that the AKP government is getting support by the Turkish people because of their economic stability and high growth. They are also using their EU membershipprocess as an incentive to introduce new reforms so they can break with the nation’s institutional kemalist ideology in Turkey. In the following paper we will examine and look at the political and economic factors that unfold in Turkey.
