Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
Variations on the Author
“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis
We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Finally, we show by means of an example that our findings have a high practical relevance.information science;Pearson correlation;cosine;similarity measure;author cocitation analysis
RACISM IN THE POST-COLONIAL SOCIETY: A Critical Discourse Analysis to Jacqueline Woodson’s Novels
RASISME DALAM MASYARAKAT PASCAKOLONIAL:
Sebuah Analisis Wacana Kritis terhadap Novel-novel Jacqueline Woodson
Abstract
Racism can be a reason for a certain group of people to behave as civilized society and assume other groups as uncivilized society. Racism is closely related to orientalism and colonialism, since generally colonialism enrooted on the superiority ism of European or Western race as white. This research analyzes racial issues in the novels of Jacqueline Woodson. This research was conducted by using Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA) theory. The researcher also used deconstruction reading approach in order to reveal racial issues in this novel. The result of the research found that these novels show the traces of racism in pascacolonial era in America. In this novel the racism act of white is reflected in its relation with black people. Its relation shows up in some aspects; First, white’s prejudice toward black people in order to maintain white supremacy. Second, discrimination and segregation that are constructed by white to make black living in marginality. Those discrimination and segregation are conducted by using verbal expression, avoidance, exclusion, physical abuse, and extinction. Third, resistance of black people against racial discrimination.

Pertolongan Tuhan Terhadap Manusia Pilihan dalam Tiga Karya Sastra The Story Of Little Bird, Ashabul Kahfi dan The Smoke Of Fuji Yama: sebuah Analisis Sastra Bandingan
There are many folktales that have similiar themes in the world. Birth, love, conflict, struggle for life, and miracle are the universal themes of folktales. Because of these similiarities, there is a great possibility for a reseracher to compare one folktale with others and reaveal the similiarities or differences among them. This article aims at highlightings a popular theme in many folktales around the world, it is about the spritual side of human’s life that gets a miracle from God. That theme is founded in three folktales which originally come from different setting of places, times, and beliefs. The first folktale is The Story of Little Bird. This folktale is a famous one from Irish with Hindy and Chatolic beliefs. The second one is the legend of Ashabul Kahfi from Middle East or Islam world. The third folktale is The Smoke of Fuji Yama, a folktale from Japan that is popular for Shinto believers. Three steps were used in analyzing these folktales. The first step was discussing the time and place of literary work production, including cultural background that set the story. The second step was analyzing literary lements namely character and setting. This step led to the theme of the folktales. The last step was discussing the story structure, such as explanation-rising the conflict-climax-and denounement. The result of analysis shows that theme is the same. It is about a help from God for the choosen and noble craetures.Key terms: literary work, folktale, theme</jats:p
Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts
We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued
use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation
counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. It is argued that increasingly available digital full text research papers make it possible for citation analysis studies to go beyond what the ISI databases have directly supported and to employ more
sophisticated methods
THE PRAISE OF PROSE IN ACHIEVING PARTICIPATORY ENGLISH LANGUAGE TEACHING (ELT)
There were great shifts in English Language Teaching (ELT) approaches and methodologies in recent years. At the same time, many researches occurred about the applications of teaching English as Second Language (ESL). It shows that, changes and innovations are something good in order to find a better pedagogic system and to be more professional in ELT. Sometimes, people resist new ways of looking, at least at the first, and it happened on ELT as well. This article is aimed at revealing ELT new ways of looking-to consider the beneficial factors of using prose in enriching interactive English language teaching into participatory English language teaching, whenever teacher and students are able to share power and come together in dialogue and mutual respect. It is considerable to reach the two components of English language pedagogy; cognitive abilities, and proficiency in English language. The writer is inspired by the thought of Shirley Brice Heath once said that “literature has no rival in its power to create natural repetition, reflection on language and how it works, and attention to audience response on the part of learners”. Teachers can use prose as a pivot in literature-based curriculum, around which curriculum revolves. In this article there will be five praiseworthy elements of prose as a pivot of participatory ELT that are going to be discussed; (1) prose is authentic, (2) prose can provide memorable contexts for the language, (3) prose illustrates appropriate language for specific situations, (4) prose links students to other cultures and subcultures, (5) prose presents topics for critical analysis, discussion, writing, and encourages performance
