In the world of event planning, "HikayatNima" stands out as a bright tribute to Malaysian history within the creative portfolio of "ACG Festiverse." While the ACG Festiverse thrives on Anime, Comic, and Gaming cultures, HikayatNima stands out as a cultural cosplay event that weaves together Malay, Chinese, Indian, and other Malaysian cultures. ACG Festiverse, founded in 2022 , plays an important role in commemorating Malaysia's Anime, Comic and Gaming scene. Frankie Ng Teck Seng, the creator behind these immersive experiences, inspired the creation of HikayatNima as a means of capturing cultural nuances. HikayatNima emerges from the complex tapestry of ACG Festiverse's event portfolio as a vibrant celebration of Malaysian cultural history, deviating from the Anime, Comic, and Gaming focus to highlight the rich amalgamation of Malay, Chinese, Indian, and other local customs. Despite the popularity of ACG Festiverse, the absence of Malay cultural aspects revealed a fundamental gap in expressing Malaysia's unique character. To address this, considerable efforts were made, including the creation of a dedicated website, collaborations with cultural custodians, custom marketing, a distinctive logo, and a fascinating video commercial.

Conversion of African Americans to Islam : a sociological analysis of the Nation of Islam and associated groups

'Conversion of African Americans to Islam: A Sociological Analysis of the Nation of Islam Associated groups' is an empirical study of the religious experience of people who had/have distinctive features in terms of race, ethnicity and historical experience. The purpose of this thesis is to demonstrate how African Americans' (AAs) conversion experience in general, and the Nation of Islam associated groups' conversion in particular, differ from the studies of recruitment and conversion in the sociology of religion and New Religion Movements (NRMs). More specifically, their recruitment and conversion experiences to Islam diverge from those who converted to mainstream Islam. The study investigates how AAs' historical experience, soci-economic difficulties and the racism they encountered shaped and influenced their religious understanding. Research methods involved participant observations, a survey questionnaire, interviews, conversations, personal communications and correspondence. To collect ethnographic data eleven months field research was conducted mainly in the Chicago area and on two short visits to Detroit, and three years continued communications with Muslim officials and academics in the area. During the field research and afterwards through personal communication 181 survey questionnaire responses were received, and 23 Muslim officials, academics and ordinary Muslims were interviewed through semi-structured, unstructured interviews, conversation and correspondence. The thesis begins with a brief history of Islam and Muslims in general and the African American Muslims (AAMs) in particular. More emphasis is given on the historical development of the Nation of Islam (NOl). Then in Chapter III, discussions of schisms in the history of the NOT are examined from sociological perspectives of social and religious movements. In Chapter IV I aimed to formulate my own perspective to analyse and study the conversion experiences of AAMs to Islam. I used a multivariate approach, considering selectively widely held conversion and recruitment theories in the sociology of the religion. I consider in Chapter V the predisposing conditions for AAMs that influence their decision-making to join in the NOT, for example, political and nationalistic sentiments and socio-economic deprivations. In Chapter VI I have applied different terms to describe their religious experiences, such as conversion, alteration and reversion. I have analysed further their encounters with the NOT, the methods of recruitment they used and their major motives for joining the NOT and converting to Tslam. In the concluding chapters (Chapter VII VTTT) I describe the different responses of AAMS to Islam following the death of Elijah Muhammad. It is found out that the Islamic appeal has polarised. While Farakhan's NOT appeared to continue the tradition and style of the old NOI with the emphasis on nationalistic and socio-economic factors, Tmam W. D. Mohammed's community turned more to the religious and spiritual aspects of Tslam. These different approaches led to a polarisation of the appeal of Tslam to AAMS. This thesis contributes to knowledge in four key areas; the sociology of religion and religious movements, the sociology of social and nationalistic movements, religious and Islamic studies

Self-organizing Map (SOM) is a very popular algorithm that has been used as clustering algorithm and data exploration. SOM consists of complex calculations where the calculation of complexity depending on the circumstances. Many researchers have managed to improve online SOM processing speed using Heterogeneous Computing (HC). HC is a combination of Central Processing Unit (CPU) and Graphic Processing Unit (GPU) that work closely together. Standard HC can be represented by CPU and GPU accessing separate memory blocks. In spite of excellent performance using standard HC, there is a situation that causes computer hardware underutilized when executing online SOM variant. In details, the situation occurs when number of cores is larger than the number of neurons on map. Moreover, the complexities of SOM steps also increase the usage of high memory capacity which leads to high rate memory transfer. This situation is caused by the standard HC implements "deep copies" in storing processing objects which lead to communication latency. Recently, combination CPU and GPU that integrated together on a single chip are rapidly attractive the design paradigm for recent platform because of their remarkable parallel processing abilities. This kind of microprocessor is based on Heterogeneous Unified Memory Access (HUMA) model. This model allows both CPU and GPU to access and store into the same memory location which avoids redundant copies of objects by "deep copies" method. Therefore, the main goal of this research is to reduce computation time of SOM training through implementing on HUMA platform and improve GPU cores utilization. This research has three main objectives to be achieved. Firstly, this research attempts to study the processing natures of original SOM algorithm on standard HC platform. Secondly is to model an enhanced parallel SOM on HUMA-GPU platform and adapting multiple stimuli approach in order to improve the processing speed. Lastly is to evaluate the enhanced parallel SOM in terms of performance accuracy, efficiency, and scalability. This research attempts to improve the processing of SOM algorithm through three stages. The research works start with conducting a preliminary study on sequential SOM algorithm. The research continues to design a parallel SOM architecture based on literature study and implements on two types of architecture; standard HC and HUMA model. Finally, this research designs and implements an enhanced parallel SOM architecture through combining two parallel methods which are network and data partitioning. The combination of the two methods are realized via adapting multiple stimuli approach. This research employs datasets that are acquired from UCI repository. As a result, the enhanced parallel SOM that executed on HUMA platform is able to score up to 1.27 of speed up overall for large map size compared to standard parallel SOM. The proposed work also scores better for smaller map size with scored up to 1.03 of speed up overall compared to standard SOM on the identical platform. Accordingly, the proposed work is able to offer a better solution for small to medium sized of data analysis software. Overall, the solution is enhanced through utilizing recent hardware technology and improved method

Feasibility of using bolted shear connector with cold-formed steel in composite construction

    No full text
In conventional composite construction for hot-rolled steel (HRS) section, the composite action is usually achieved by using headed studs shear connectors. But, for cold-formed steel (CFS) section, the use of headed studs is not feasible as the section is very thin and difficult to be weld. Therefore, an innovative way of shear connection mechanism of using bolt and nut is suggested in this study. This paper presents the feasibility of using bolt as shear connector by presenting experimental test results so as to explore more on their capability to be used as shear connectors. The study investigated the structural capability of the proposed bolted shear connector when used in concrete known as Selfcompacting concrete (SCC) integrated with CFS to provide the required composite action. Push out test specimens with bolted shear connector of grade 8.8 at designated intervals longitudinally spaced were fabricated, cast and tested to failure. The results showed that the proposed shear connector was structurally capable and also an appreciable strength resistance was achieved
