Molecular dynamics analysis of plastic crystals as solid-solid phase-change materials for thermal energy storage
Solid-solid phase-change materials (PCMs) represent a promising class of thermal energy storage materials, offering high energy density while eliminating leakage risks associated with solid-liquid PCMs. These materials undergo a transition from an ordered to a disordered crystalline structure upon exceeding the solid-solid phase transition temperature. Their intrinsic stability also facilitates the development of durable composite PCMs. However, the molecular mechanisms governing their thermophysical properties during solid-solid phase transitions remain poorly understood, limiting their broader application. This study employs molecular dynamics (MD) simulations to investigate the thermophysical behavior of plastic crystals - pentaerythritol, pentaglycerine, neopentyl glycol, and tris(hydroxymethyl)aminomethane - as promising solid-solid PCMs. The results reveal a linear decrease in density and a corresponding increase in specific volume with rising temperature, with abrupt volumetric changes occurring during phase transitions. These transitions exhibit latent heat values of up to 216 kJ/kg, in agreement with experimental data, highlighting their significant energy storage capacity. Molecular-level analyses show the critical role of hydrogen bonding networks in determining these properties. Specifically, during the transition from the low-temperature alpha phase to the high-temperature gamma phase, strong hydrogen bonds are replaced by weaker ones, as evidenced by radial distribution function analyses. This structural reorganization correlates with a significant decrease in thermal conductivity across the phase transition. These findings provide valuable insights into the relationship between molecular structure and thermophysical properties in solid-solid PCMs. By clarifying these interactions, this work guides the rational design of advanced thermal energy storage materials with optimized performance for engineering applications
Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
Variations on the Author
“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
Using diversity for classifier ensemble pruning: an empirical investigation
The concept of “diversity” has been one of the main open issues in the field of multiple classifier systems. In this paper we address a facet of diversity related to its effectiveness for ensemble construction, namely, explicitly using diversity measures for ensemble construction techniques based on the kind of overproduce and choose strategy known as ensemble pruning. Such a strategy consists of selecting the (hopefully) more accurate subset of classifiers out of an original, larger ensemble. Whereas several existing pruning methods use some combination of individual classifiers’ accuracy and diversity, it is still unclear whether such an evaluation function is better than the bare estimate of ensemble accuracy. We empirically investigate this issue by comparing two evaluation functions in the context of ensemble pruning: the estimate of ensemble accuracy, and its linear combination with several well-known diversity measures. This can also be viewed as using diversity as a regularizer, as suggested by some authors. To this aim we use a pruning method based on forward selection, since it allows a direct comparison between different evaluation functions. Experiments on thirty-seven benchmark data sets, four diversity measures and three base classifiers provide evidence that using diversity measures for ensemble pruning can be advantageous over using only ensemble accuracy, and that diversity measures can act as regularizers in this context
Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis
We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. An empirical investigation on the use of diversity for creation of classifier ensembles
We address one of the main open issues about the use of diversity in multiple classifier systems: the effectiveness of the explicit use of diversity measures for creation of classifier ensembles. So far, diver- sity measures have been mostly used for ensemble pruning, namely, for selecting a subset of classifiers out of an original, larger ensemble. Here we focus on pruning techniques based on forward/backward selection, since they allow a direct comparison with the simple estimation of accu- racy of classifier ensemble. We empirically carry out this comparison for several diversity measures and benchmark data sets, using bagging as the ensemble construction technique, and majority voting as the fusion rule. Our results provide further and more direct evidence to previous observations against the effectiveness of the use of diversity measures for ensemble pruning, but also show that, combined with ensemble accuracy estimated on a validation set, diversity can have a regularization effect when the validation set size is small
Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts
We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued
use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation
counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases.
