Important criteria for measuring heritage building condition

    No full text
The excellence condition of a heritage building lies not only in the appearance of its individual elements, but also in the integrity of all its components, considered as unique criteria of the specific construction technology of its time and place. However, these criteria are varied and not specific. Therefore, this study aimed to identify and rank the important criteria for measuring the condition of heritage buildings in Malaysia. Data obtained through questionnaire and analyzed using Average Index (AI) in order to establish the important criteria. Samples were selected from a panel of experts in the field of heritage buildings management including industry players and academicians. The established criteria will be used as components to develop a new method of heritage building condition determination model in Malaysia

Use of new efficient lossless data compression method in transmitting encrypted baptista symmetric chaotic cryptosystem data

    No full text
A new compression algorithm used to ensure a modified Baptista symmetric cryptosystem which is based on a chaotic dynamical system to be applicable is proposed. The Baptista symmetric cryptosystem able to produce various ciphers responding to the same message input. This modified Baptista type cryptosystem suffers from message expansion that goes against the conventional methodology of a symmetric cryptosystem. A new lossless data compression algorithm based on theideas from the Huffman coding for data transmission is proposed. This new compression mechanism does not face the problem of mapping elements from a domain which is much larger than its range. Our new algorithm circumvent this problem via a pre-defined codeword list. The purposed algorithm has fast encoding and decoding mechanism and proven analytically to be a lossless data compression technique

Reconstructing applicable chaotic Baptista-type symmetric cryptosystem

    No full text
This work, introduces a method to repair a cryptosystem based on a chaotic dynamical system. Baptista exploited the chaotic property of the logistic equation f(x) = b x (1 - x) to develop a cryptosystem. This cryptosystem has the ability to produce various ciphers responding to the same message input. Alvarez through his one-time pad attack successfully attacked the Baptista cyptosystem. Ariffin attempted to modify the cryptosystem to enhance the security of the original Baptista’s cryptosystem. Rhouma identified a flaw in the method Ariffin put forward, specifically in step 4 of the encryption procedure, where it does not implement a oneto- one operation resulting in failure to decrypt the ciphertext. The method is based on the Fractal and Iterated System (IFS), where an in-depth study on Fractal, Chaos and Cryptography is needed to assist in actualizing the research objectives. The algorithm is developed to counter the one-time pad attack. This recommended encryption algorithm also overcomes the flaw in Ariffin’s encryption procedure. The modified Baptista type cryptosystem suffers from message expansion that goes against the conventional methodology of a symmetric cryptosystem. As a result, we studied the idea of Huffman encoding. We then designed a new compression algorithm developed using ideas from the Huffman coding. Finally, the compression algorithm is applied onto the modified Baptista cryptosystem to show a possible practical deployment of the Baptista cryptosystem and to also produce better compression ratio

Poster presentation encompasses many elements such as the organization of poster, the content related to the title proposed, the appearance and the written word. Usually, the poster presentation is used as a platform for student to present their final year project or any other competitions. Students will be evaluated based on the criteria that meets the requirements proposed by the panels or judges. However, their performance in poster presentations does not provide the suitable techniques to estimate the actual value since it involves the elements of fuzziness. In this study, the fuzzy evaluation technique will be applied to measure the performance of the poster presentation. The motivation behind poster presentation is to determine the performance of students using fuzzy evaluation method. The objective of this study is to compare the results between using conventional method and fuzzy evaluation method. The method consists of normalizing the marks, developing the graph of fuzzy membership function, calculating the degree of satisfaction, and finalizing the actual marks. We believed that the result from this study could be able to measure the better output with the consideration of linguistic terms includes excellent, good, moderate, satisfactory, and so on. This method also can be an alternative way to evaluate the performance of the poster presentation

Sludge is an unavoidable product of wastewater treatment and creates problems of disposal. For highly urbanized cities, sludge disposal by land filling might not be appropriate due to limitation of land. Using RHA_SSA for this study will encourage Malaysia to build more low carbon and sustainable building construction. Finding more alternative materials in enrich concrete structure and at the same time promoting the environmental sustainability is a must for Malaysia as developing country with increasing number of infrastructures built throughout the year. This research had been studied the effect of partial replacement of cement by Sewage Sludge Ash (SSA) and Rice Husk Ash (RHA). The effects on the nature of concrete exhibited mechanical properties of concrete such as compressive strength, water absorption, from a combination of sewage sludge ash and rice husk ash at different proportions. There were 108 samples had been prepared at different percentages of replacement of cement by using sewage sludge ash and rice husk ash. RHA_SSA are used as partial replacement of cement for 10%, 20%, 30%, 40% and 50% in the concrete. The samples had been tested with compressive test. From the results, initially, there was an increment compressive strength of concrete at 10% amount replacement SSA and RHA, but the compressive strength declined when the amount replacement SSA and RHA are developing more than 10%. In addition, the concrete also showed increasing of compressive strength within the additional curing period, which was 7 days, 14 days and 28 days. Therefore, there is potential to reuse this waste material as part of construction materials and for future researches in minimization of waste
