Progressive Muscle Relaxation to Reduce Anxiety Before Electroconvulsive Therapy (ECT)
Sukut, Ozge/0000-0001-6394-3346Background: ECT is a well-established treatment modality for severe psychiatric disorders, particularly major depressive disorder and bipolar disorder. It is well-documented that patients experience significant anxiety before treatment, which can adversely affect nursing care and the treatment process. This study aims to determine the effect of progressive muscle relaxation exercises on anxiety levels among patients with bipolar and depressive disorders prior to their first ECT session. Method: Data for this quasi-experimental study were collected from 30 in-patients with bipolar disorder and depression who received ECT for the first time in the hospital between May 29 and October 29, 2020. Data collection involved an information form, the STAXI State Anxiety Scale, and the Visual Analogue Scale for Anxiety. The data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, the Friedman test, and the Wilcoxon test. Results: The mean VAS-A score decreased from 4.93 +/- 1.88 before PMR to 2.83 +/- 1.76 after PMR, and further to 1.43 +/- 1.21 after ECT (p .05). Heart rate and respiratory rate also significantly decreased after PMR exercises (p < .05), while oxygen saturation remained unchanged. Prior to the next ECT session, the mean VAS-A score increased to 5.10 +/- 1.77, and no significant changes were observed in either physiological parameters or anxiety measures. Conclusion: While a short-term effect on VAS Anxiety levels was observed following PMR exercises before ECT, patients still exhibited high levels of anxiety before subsequent ECT sessions. Therefore, it is recommended that PMR exercises be performed before each ECT session, and the effects of long-term application should be further investigated. Future studies should employ a randomized controlled design to compare results with a control group.Istanbul Okan UniversityThis study is derived from the master's thesis of the first author, conducted at the Institute of Graduate Studies, Istanbul Okan University.Science Citation Index Expanded - Social Science Citation Inde

The role of schooling for heritage language learners: A case study of Turkish heritage speakers
This qualitative case study with a descriptive statistical analysis of heritage language learners’ language skills explores how Turkish communities in the U.S. support their children’s heritage language maintenance with the help of Heritage Language school. The goal of this study is to analyze Heritage Language (HL) literacy learning and identity processes within a Heritage Language school. Understanding the community’s values, and ideologies are central to analyzing Heritage language learners’ development. Thus, the study considers: (1) teachers’ classroom practices, (2) students’ motivation or resilience, (3) parents’ role and identity, (4) heritage language community’s support and (5) HL learners’ verbal narrative language skills. Data was collected through interviews, conversations (face-to-face and virtual), videotaping students’ task, fieldnotes extracted from observations.
This study illuminates how Turkish American heritage language learners keep their HL and what role parents, volunteer teachers, and the Turkish community play in learners who are 7 to 12 years old. This research is contributing to our understanding of language and culture and the challenges a unique group, Turkish immigrants, face while living in a host country where the dominant language is different than their heritage language.
Findings suggest that even the limited time the parents share for their children’s heritage language literacy skills every Sunday has a meaningful and beneficial impact both on the language skills and identity construction despite the lack of appropriate resources and teachers with teaching certificate or experience to teach the heritage language. Conflicting views regarding the need for the continuous cultivation of language and identity are observed. The majority of the participants recognize the importance of nurturing language and culture but in ways that they primarily associate with certain institutionalized forms of teaching. Three out of four teachers believe that the existence of this school contribute to the students’ language identity and their attitude towards keeping their mothers’ or fathers’ language. The controversial idea coming from one teacher imply that students at this heritage school are too young to be expected to adapt to heritage language culture.
Analysis of the open-ended interview questions which are related to identity demonstrate that students’ self-acknowledgement is based on how parents represent and interpret their own identities. Content-analysis of the open-ended interview questions with heritage language learners indicate that a large number of learners directly adhere to their heritage language through either their mothers or their fathers or through both their parents. The inconsistency between children and parents in terms of how they approach the heritage language lead children to adopt more bicultural identities because they are the product of bicultural families who live in a society where the American way of schooling and living is the culture.
Statistical analysis of HL learners’ spoken data show that they are having troubles in their heritage language acquisition of inflectional morphology in Turkish. When the results are interpreted to analyze the speaking skills of heritage speakers, dominant home language of each family, frequency of visits to Turkey of heritage speakers, their age, and lastly the duration of heritage language schooling help uncover the underlying variables that influence students’ skills. The study finds that the value of the school is enormous since it is the only environment for students, who attend English-only public schools during the week days while living in an English-speaking city, to get exposed to their heritage language. Future research must include a longitudinal study over the children who attend a heritage language school until they complete high school. It would not only help Less Commonly Taught Language programs at universities or colleges by providing a background on the process but also help pre-service teachers who are in English only public schools with heritage language students.Submission published under a 24 month embargo labeled 'Closed Access', the embargo will last until 2022-12-01The student, Ozge Evcen, accepted the attached license on 2020-11-23 at 19:58.The student, Ozge Evcen, submitted this Dissertation for approval on 2020-11-23 at 20:13.This Dissertation was approved for publication on 2020-11-25 at 08:22.DSpace SAF Submission Ingestion Package generated from Vireo submission #15948 on 2021-03-04 at 16:32:21Made available in DSpace on 2021-03-05T21:45:36Z (GMT). A predictive score for retinopathy of prematurity by using clinical risk factors and serum insulin-like growth factor-1 levels
AIM: To detect the impact of insulin-like growth factor-1 (IGF-1) and other risk factors for the early prediction of retinopathy of prematurity (ROP) and to establish a scoring system for ROP prediction by using clinical criteria and serum IGF-1 levels. METHODS: The study was conducted with 127 preterm infants. IGF-1 levels in the 1st day of life, 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 4th week of life was analyzed. The score was established after logistic regression analysis, considering the impact of each variable on the occurrences of any stage ROP. A validation cohort containing 107 preterm infants was included in the study and the predictive ability of ROP score was calculated. RESULTS: Birth weights (BW), gestational weeks (GW) and the prevalence of breast milk consumption were lower, respiratory distress syndrome (RDS), bronchopulmonary dysplasia (BPD) and necrotizing enterocolitis (NEC) were more frequent, the duration of mechanical ventilation and oxygen supplementation was longer in patients with ROP (P<0.05). Initial serum IGF-1 levels tended to be lower in newborns who developed ROP. Logistic regression analysis revealed that low BW (<1250 g), presence of intraventricular hemorrhage (IVH) and formula feeding increased the risk of ROP. Afterwards, the scoring system was validated on 107 infants. The negative predictive values of a score less than 4 were 84.3%, 74.7% and 79.8% while positive predictive values were 76.3%, 65.5% and 71.6% respectively. CONCLUSION: In addition to BW <1250 g and IVH, formula consumption was detected as a risk factor for the development of ROP. Breastfeeding is important for prevention of ROP in preterm infants

Synthesis of Mn-doped ZnS thin films by chemical bath deposition: Optical properties in the visible region
2nd International Conference on Advances in Natural and Applied Sciences (ICANAS) -- APR 18-21, 2017 -- Antalya, TURKEYTransparent ZnS: Mn thin films were produced by chemical bath deposition (CBD) technique at 80 degrees C for 4h, 6h and 8h durations. The optical properties such as optical transmittance (T %), reflectance (R %), extinction coefficient (k) and refractive index (n) were deeply investigated in terms of contribution ratio, wavelength and film thickness. The optical properties of ZnS: Mn thin films were determined by UV/vis spectrophotometer transmittance measurements in the range of lambda= 300-1100 nm. Optical transmittances of the films were found from 12% to 92% in the visible region. The refractive index (n) values for visible region were calculated as 1.34-5.09. However, film thicknesses were calculated between 50 and 901 nm by gravimetric analysis.Agri Ibrahim Cecen Univ,IC FdnCukurova University [FEF2012D9]This work was supported by Cukurova University under FEF2012D9 project number
