Real Life Relevance of Shakespear’s Grown Up Daughters
Get PDFDespite the fact that a single woman ruled England at the time of William Shakespeare, the Elizabethan society was patriarchal. Women were considered the weaker sex and in need always of being protected. When married, women were expected to bear children, for childbearing was considered an honour. Most women bore children every two years, but because so many children died, families were not large. As head of the household, the husband was allowed to chastise (reprimand) his wife, and often women were not allowed to inherit property.
This is contrary to our present society, though there are still places in rural Africa and Asia and Sierra Leone to be specific were women are still treated in such a horrible manner. Although the society was patriarchal, there were women who were highly educated.
However, women were not allowed into the professions, they were permitted to write literature, providing the subject was suitable; for this reason, young men played roles in Shakespeare’s time. But women of our age had stamped on these barbaric attitudes of men and they are now agitating for equality which so many governments in Africa and other parts of the globe refused to accept. In this vain, many of these women are now putting on rebellious attitudes at home, workplace, institutions etc. Girls are no longer submissive like those in Shakespeare’s time. Factors Militating Against the Effective Teaching and Learning of Krio at the Junior Secondary School Level:: A Case Study of Three Schools in the Western Area of Freetown, Sierra Leone
Get PDFThis study was aimed at investigating factors militating against the effective teaching and learning of Krio at the Junior Secondary School (JSS) Level in a sample of JSS pupils in selected schools in the Western Area of Freetown, Sierra Leone.
Questionnaires were administered to both teachers of Krio and pupils offering the subject at the targeted level. These, alongside observation and focus group discussions, were used to determine the level of training and experience of the teachers; facilities which support the teaching and learning of Krio; attitudes of teachers, pupils and other stakeholders towards the teaching and learning of Krio; mode and frequency of assessment; provision of institutional support; and, the success rate of pupils at the Basic Educational Certificate Exams (BECE) in the selected schools.
Three schools were targeted. In each of these schools, questionnaires were administered to 50 pupils, giving a total of 150 respondents.
A total of eleven teachers were sampled. The study revealed that:
The teachers of Krio in the selected schools were and trained and qualified. However, none of them studied krio as a major and only about one third read it as a minor.
Teaching and learning materials are inadequate, and time allocated to the teaching of krio is insufficient.
Attitude is a major factor which militates against the teaching and learning of krio in the selected schools.
Written assignments, tests and exams are the main assessment tools.
Institutional support (in-service trainings/workshops/seminars) plays a great role in building teachers’ capacity to teach the subject as all the teachers sampled did not study krio as a major subject.
BECE results (krio -2010 and 2011) indicate that only a small percentage of the pupils at JSSIII opted for krio

Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed

Get PDF“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis

We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Note that the objective for the hut study was to evaluate the IRS treatment applications for residual efficacy against Anopheles mosquitoes, including the local An. coluzzii mosquito population. Cows were only used to attract mosquitoes into the huts and no tests were carried out directly on the cows. The author checklist is intended for use with studies where experiments are carried out on animals, which is why we have had such difficulty in completing this for the hut study, as many of the questions do not relate to how the cows were used
