Multi-modal counterflow flame structure under autoignitive conditions
In practical systems, combustion does not occur in asymptotic limits of nonpremixed flames, premixed flames, or autoignition but rather multiple modes that interact. In canonical configurations, multi-modal combustion is critical in the stabilization of lifted jet flames. At low temperature conditions, such flames are stabilized by a 'triple' flame consisting of regions of premixed and nonpremixed combustion. At high temperature conditions, autoignition is activated, and the role of autoignition versus premixed flame propagation in flame stabilization depends on the local residence time and the local flow speed. While detailed simulations of laminar lifted jet flames are computationally tractable, extension to DNS of turbulent lifted jet flames at reasonable Reynolds numbers is computationally intractable due to the large domain size required. Therefore, the counterflow configuration is investigated as a more compact alternative. In this work, a series of detailed simulations of DME/air laminar counterflow flames at elevated pressure are performed with variations in the stream compositions, temperatures, and velocities to provide flames spanning different combinations of combustion modes, specifically a nonpremixed flame, a 'triple' flame, and a series of flames with all three modes interacting. Similarities and differences between the counterflow flames and the lifted jet flames are explored.</p
Sentinel lymph node mapping in endometrial cancer: comparison of fluorescence dye with traditional radiocolloid and blue
Sentinel lymph node (SLN) mapping in endometrial cancer (EMCA) is rapidly gaining acceptance in the clinical community. As compared to a full lymphadenectomy in every patient, to a selective lymphadenectomy after frozen section of uterus in selected patients with intrauterine risk factors or to a strategy in which a lymphadenectomy is always omitted, SLN mapping seems to be a reasonable and oncologically safe middle ground. Various protocols can be used when applying an SLN mapping. In this manuscript we review the characteristics, toxicity and clinical impact of technetium-99m radiocolloid (Tc-99m), of the blue dyes (methylene blue, isosulfan blue and patent blue) and of indocyanine green (ICG). ICG has an excellent toxicity profile, has higher overall and bilateral detection rates as compared to blue dyes and higher bilateral detection rates as compared to a combination of Tc-99m and blue dye. The detrimental effect of BMI on the detection rates is attenuated when ICG is used as a tracer. The ease of use of the ICG SLN mapping is perceived by the patients as a better quality of care delivered. Whenever possible, ICG should be favored over the other tracers for SLN mapping in EMCA patients
Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
Imaging of respiratory-related population activity with single-cell resolution
The pre-Botzinger complex (PBC) in the rostral ventrolateral medulla contains a kernel involved in respiratory rhythm generation. So far, its respiratory activity has been analyzed predominantly by electrophysiological approaches. Recent advances in fluorescence imaging now allow for the visualization of neuronal population activity in rhythmogenic networks. In the respiratory network, voltage-sensitive dyes have been used mainly, so far, but their low sensitivity prevents an analysis of activity patterns of single neurons during rhythmogenesis. We now have succeeded in using more sensitive Ca2+ imaging to study respiratory neurons in rhythmically active brain stem slices of neonatal rats. For the visualization of neuronal activity, fluo-3 was suited best in terms of neuronal specificity, minimized background fluorescence, and response magnitude. The tissue penetration of fluo-3 was improved by hyperosmolar treatment (100 mM mannitol) during dye loading. Rhythmic population activity was imaged with single-cell resolution using a sensitive charge-coupled device camera and a x20 objective, and it was correlated with extracellularly recorded mass activity of the contralateral PBC. Correlated optical neuronal activity was obvious online in 29% of slices. Rhythmic neurons located deeper became detectable during offline image processing. Based on their activity patterns, 74% of rhythmic neurons were classified as inspiratory and 26% as expiratory neurons. Our approach is well suited to visualize and correlate the activity of several single cells with respiratory network activity. We demonstrate that neuronal synchronization and possibly even network configurations can be analyzed in a noninvasive approach with single-cell resolution and at frame rates currently not reached by most scanning-based imaging techniques
Variations on the Author
“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
Cervical length after cerclage: comparison between laparoscopic and vaginal approach
PURPOSE: The aim of our study was to investigate the sonographic changes of the cervical length during pregnancy after the placement of a transvaginal cervical cerclage (TVC) or a laparoscopic abdominal cerclage (LAC) in patients with cervical insufficiency (CI).
METHODS: Between January 2008 and March 2015, a retrospective analysis of all women undergoing a prophylactic laparoscopic (LAC group) or transvaginal (TVC group) cerclage due to cervical insufficiency was conducted. Nonparametric variables were analysed with the Mann-Whitney (U) test, and categorical-type outcomes were analysed with the Fisher's exact test. A p value <0.05 was considered as significant. Data analysis was performed using Prism 5 for Mac OS X.
RESULTS: Thirty-eight patients were included. Of these, 18 and 20 underwent an LAC and a TVC, respectively. Mean gestational age at surgery in the LAC and TVC groups was 11.4 ± 1.6 and 17 ± 3 weeks, respectively (p < 0.05). The cervical length prior to surgery was similar among the two groups. After cerclage placement, the distance between the tape and the external cervical os differed significantly between the two groups (LAC: 31.5 ± 8.8 mm vs TVC: 13.5 ± 4.9 mm; p < 0.0001) (Fig. 1). During pregnancy, the cervical length in the TVC group showed a significant shortening (from 26.6 ± 7 mm before surgery to 13.2 ± 7 mm at 33 weeks; p < 0.0001), while in the LAC group, the cervical length remained unchanged.
CONCLUSIONS: In patients with CI, LAC is associated with a better preservation of the cervical length throughout pregnancy as compared to TVC
