Estimating the burden of malaria : the need for improved surveillance
Ivo Mueller, Laurence Slutsker, and Marcel Tanner highlight the importance of using complementary methods to estimate the burden of malaria and call for a renewed focus on efficient malaria surveillanc
eMC: A Monte Carlo scheme with energy conservation
Coarse-graining decimates degrees of freedom (DoFs), and the free-energy of the integrated-out DoF can be accounted for by endowing each of the coarse-grained particles with an internal energy and concomitant entropy. These eDPD models allow to study energy transport, however, the first-order integration scheme for the corresponding stochastic equation of motion requires prohibitively small time steps. Here we overcome this limitation by an energy Monte Carlo (eMC) scheme that i) generates the microcanonical ensemble of particle coordinates and momenta, and internal energies, and that ii) mimics a realistic dynamics. We apply the eMC scheme to a soft, coarse-grained model of polymers, deduce the universal form of the internal entropy by performing a coarse-graining procedure, and study heat conductivity of a polymer melt
CAPRI versus AGLINK-COSIMO: Two partial equilibrium models - Two baseline approaches
The agricultural modelling world has generated several models aiming at the analysis of the response of the sector to certain changes in exogenous mainly policy variables. Among those, the CAPRI modelling system developed by a consortium centred on the University of Bonn and the AGLINK-COSIMO model, a joint product of the OECD and the FAO, are well known and accepted as comprehensive tools. This analysis focuses on a qualitative comparison of both models and particularly on the process of setting up the baseline. The baseline is a medium-term projection of agricultural markets reflecting current policies and those already decided upon. This projection in turn serves as the base for comparisons when analyzing scenarios. It is shown that CAPRI uses generic and automatic procedures whenever possible for conducting the database and the baseline, while AGLINK-COSIMO puts more emphasis on expert knowledge in this process. Both approaches are shown to have certain advantages while the conclusion that a combination of them would potentially improve both models will be drawn from this analysis.CAPRI, AGLINK-COSIMO, Baseline process, Agricultural and Food Policy,
After the Addendum: Author Rights Management and/as Library Service
This report presents the findings from a qualitative study of Rice University faculty attitudes and practices around author rights conducted by Marcel LaFlamme, a graduate student in the Department of Anthropology, during his tenure as a Fondren Fellow. This project was supervised by Shannon Kipphut-Smith, Fondren Library’s scholarly communications liaison
Ruskin traduzido: Sesame and Lilies por Proust e Catalán
This study analises the translations of Sesame and Lilies, by John Ruskin, into French and Spanish in order to examine issues related to the essay as a literary genre, to the translation of essays and to authorship. This exam will be carried out by analising the translation into French by Marcel Proust and its paratext and the translation into Spanish by Miguel Catalán, accompanied by its paratext
GC-MS analysis of the designer drug alpha-pyrrolidinovalerophenone and its metabolites in urine and blood in an acute poisoning case
alpha-Pyrrolidinovalerophenone (alpha-PVP) is a synthetic cathinone belonging to the group of "second generation'' pyrrolidinophenones that becomes more and more popular as a designer psychostimulant. Here we provide toxicological analytical support for a severe poisoning with alpha-PVP. Serum and urine samples that were sent to our laboratory were subjected to a general unknown screening procedure. The procedure includes immunoassay-based screening of drugs of abuse in serum and systematic toxicological analysis of urine and serum after neutral and basic liquid-liquid extraction followed by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS). Whereas the immunoassay delivered negative results, analyzing the urine sample by GC-MS in full scan mode disclosed the presence of alpha-PVP and its metabolites alpha-(2 ''-oxo-pyrrolidino)valerophenone (2 ''-oxo-alpha-PVP) and 1-phenyl-2-(pyrrolidin-1-yl) pentan-1-ol (OH-alpha-PVP). In the acetylated urine sample we found additionally N,N-bis-dealkyl-PVP. In serum, alpha-PVP could be detected after solid phase extraction and a concentration of 29 ng/mL was determined. Other forensic relevant substances were not detected. The presented data can explain the psychotic symptoms and behavioural pattern of the subject after abuse of alpha-PVP, leading to a clinical condition similar to excited delirium syndrome.
DNA microsatellite analysis for parentage control in Austrian pigs
We present an efficient parentage control for pigs based on ten polymorphic microsatellite markers analyzed in a single PCR reaction. Assuming one known parent ("paternity control"), combined exclusion probabilities (CEPs) ranged from 99.18% (Landrace), 99.74% (Pietrain) to 99.76% (Large White) for the most important Austrian breeds. Assuming a known parent-pair ("parentage control", e.g. a substituted offspring), the CEP of the 10-plex PCR increased to 99.97% (Landrace) and 99.99% (Pietrain and Large White). We developed an additional standby battery of 5 markers, which might be applied in those cases, where the CEP of the 10-plex PCR is not sufficient. Therefore an automated, cost and time reduced genotype analysis for pigs is available
