Jeunesse: Lecture suivie
I am delighted to have found this little paperback in a favorite bookshop in Paris. I look forward to using it myself. It brings two of his best illustrators to a pupil's book of Florian's fables. The colored illustrations are not the only help for those of us trying to understand a sometimes difficult author. There are vocabulary notes, comments, and -- especially -- a short discussion of each fable's moral. These discussions are pleasantly candid, as in this comment on "La taupe et les lapins": "La fable de Florian est peut-être moins claire qu'elle n'y paraȋt" (55). Great work on rendering the colored illustrations!Language note: FrenchFloria
Fables de Florian, Nouvelle Edition
Here is a small edition, 3¼" x 5¼," of 162 pages. It seems to be identical to Bodemann #274, published by the same people two years earlier. As Bodemann notes in a very short description, the illustrations come as three panels per page. One panel often represents two fables. My favorites among these very small illustrations are "The Blind and the Lame" (18); "Two Bachelors" (48); "Owl and Pigeon" (83); and "Ass and Flute" (111). Do not miss the gigantic crocodile on 120! Illustrations occur facing these pages: 1, 12, 18, 29, 38, 48, 66, 83, 111, and 120. There is an AI at the back. This is a hardbound book (hard cover)Language note: FrenchNo Autho
Spatiotemporal modeling of the expansion of mechanized agriculture in the Bolivian lowland forests
Since the 1980s, mechanized soybean production in Bolivia has caused extensive deforestation in the northeast of Santa Cruz de la Sierra in the eastern Bolivian lowlands. We analyze the spatial and temporal dynamics of deforestation due to mechanized agriculture with spatially explicit logistic regression models. Deforestation patterns are derived from the classification of Landsat imagery by Killeen et al. (2007) and include live time steps (1976, 1986, 1992, 2001 and 2005). We associate deforestation with geophysical and socioeconomic determinants. Our model controls for spatial autocorrelation and temporal dependencies, and we assess the robustness of the results for several model formulations. The expansion of mechanized agriculture is concentrated in areas with favorable environmental conditions, good market access and close proximity to prior deforestation. While overall dynamics remained relatively stable over time, the expansion of mechanized agriculture between 2001 and 2005 became more tolerant to excessive rainfall and less dependent on fertile soils. This mirrors the increasing penetration of mechanized agriculture into humid and less fertile Amazonian rainforests in the northern portion of the study area. The map of deforestation probability substantiates these patterns and shows the highest propensities for future deforestation in the north. Our study demonstrates the value of spatial regression models to better understand the development of deforestation dynamics over a 30-year time span, and contributes to the formulation of policies that aim to reduce deforestation. Yet the results are sensitive to hidden correlations between independent variables, and we therefore advocate a careful evaluation of regression results for different model formulations. Sulfhydryl oxidation reduces hippocampal susceptibility to hypoxia-induced spreading depression by activating BK channels
The cytosolic redox status modulates ion channels and receptors by oxidizing/ reducing their sulfhydryl ( SH) groups. We therefore analyzed to what degree SH modulation affects hippocampal susceptibility to hypoxia. In rat hippocampal slices, severe hypoxia caused a massive depolarization of CA1 neurons and a negative shift of the extracellular DC potential, the characteristic sign of hypoxia- induced spreading depression ( HSD). Oxidizing SH groups by 5,5 '- dithiobis 2- nitrobenzoic acid ( DTNB, 2 mM) postponed HSD by 30%, whereas their reduction by 1,4- dithio- DL- threitol ( DTT, 2 mM) or alkylation by N- ethylmaleimide ( 500 mu M) hastened HSD onset. The DTNB- induced postponement of HSD was not affected by tolbutamide ( 200 mu M), DL- 2- amino- 5-phosphonovaleric acid ( 150 mu M), or 6- cyano- 7- nitroquinoxaline- 2,3-dione ( 25 mu M). It was abolished, however, by Ni2+ ( 2 mM), withdrawal of extracellular Ca2+, charybdotoxin ( 25 nM), and iberiotoxin ( 50 nM). In CA1 neurons DTNB induced a moderate hyperpolarization, blocked spontaneous spike discharges and postponed the massive hypoxic depolarization. DTT induced burst firing, depolarized glial cells, and hastened the onset of the massive hypoxic depolarization. Schaffer- collateral/ CA1 synapses were blocked by DTT but not by DTNB; axonal conduction remained intact. Mitochondria did not markedly respond to DTNB or DTT. While the targets of DTT are less clear, the postponement of HSD by DTNB indicates that sulfhydryl oxidation increases the tolerance of hippocampal tissue slices against hypoxia. We identified as the underlying mechanism the activation of BK channels in a Ca2+- sensitive manner. Accordingly, ionic disregulation and the loss of membrane potential occur later or might even be prevented during short- term insults. Therefore well- directed oxidation of SH groups could mediate neuroprotection
Interview with Florian Bieber
Interview with Florian Bieber, lecturer in East European Politics at the University of Kent in Canterbury, England. Interview conducted in Ithaca, NY on March 13, 2009. Dr. Bieber has worked in Belgrade (Serbia) and Sarajevo (Bosnia-Herzegovina) for the European Centre for Minority Issues and has taught at the Central European University, at the University of Sarajevo and at the University of Bologna. He is also the author of a book about Serbian nationalism, entitled Nationalism in Serbia from the Death of Tito to the Fall of Milosevic (Muenster: Lit Verlag, 2005, in German), and another book, Post-War Bosnia: Ethnic Structure, Inequality and Governance of the Public Sector (London: Palgrave, 2006). Fables de Florian
Nouvelle édition, ornée de figures. This diminutive but complete edition (3¼ x 5¼) is not in Bodemann. The British Library seems to have an edition of Florian published by Genets Jeune in 1808. There are four illustrations here: The Cat and the Binoculars (56); The Children and the Partridges (122); The Savant and the Farmer (138); The Countryman and the River (182). There is an AI at the back. The first title-page lists 1821 as the publication date, but the second title-page has 1820.This is a hardbound book (hard cover)Language note: FrenchJean-Pierre Claris de Floria
Human-Computer Integration (Dagstuhl Seminar 18322)
The rise of technology that supports a partnership between user and computer highlights an opportunity for a new era of "human-computer integration", contrasting the previously dominant paradigm of computers functioning as tools. However, most work around these technologies only focused on the instrumental perspective to achieve extrinsic performance objectives. However, phenomenology emphasizes that it is also important to support the experiential perspective, which indicates that technology should also help people pay attention to their lived experiences and personal growth in order to deepen their understanding of their own bodies.
This seminar focuses on embodied integration, where a computer tightly integrates with the person's body. Although an increasing number of systems are emerging, a thorough understanding of how to design such systems is notably absent. The reason for this is the limited knowledge about how such embodied partnerships unfold, and what underlying theory could guide such developments. This seminar brought together leading experts from industry and academia, including those who are central to the development of products and ideas such as wearables, on-body robotics, and exertion systems. The goal was to address key questions around the design of embodied integration and to jump-start collaborations to pioneer new approaches for a human-computer integrated future
