Sustainability Optimization: Assessment of Recycling Scenarios for Timber-Concrete Hybrid Slabs
Over the last years, increasing awareness of the alarming proximity to critical climate tipping points is spreading, along with the knowledge that implications for the whole humanity would be exacerbated in case these limits are overcome. Thus, a series of international actions that also involve a rethinking of traditional steps for design, maintenance and dismantling in civil engineering applications initiated. One of the most demanding targets is to include environmental assessment of a structure already in the design phase to equate sustainability with other driving parameters, as e.g., economic benefits. Reduction of environmental impact cannot be reduced to a mere calculation, but it should be exploited for seeking new structural solutions in a comprehensive scenario. In such scenario, a composite slab made by concrete and engineered timber (Timber Concrete Composite, TCC) is a valuable answer to decrease environmental impact of such horizontal element, improving its rigidity, stiffness, and load-bearing capacity. In this context, a broad outlook supports a specific focus on uncertainties that may affect Life-Cycle Assessment (LCA) results: evaluation of multiple scenarios is the key to smooth uncertain data pertaining service life or End-of-Life events. Assessment of multiple scenarios allows for consideration of burdens and benefits currently treated as non-standard option, as e.g., mixed End-of-Life scenario exploiting both timber and concrete carbon capture inborn ability. In this way, the composite slab is used as concrete layer optimizer since the rationale behind this research pursues minimization of materials quantities through achievement of maximum environmental and structural performances. To deliver robust results, two sets of potential solutions are analzyed, characterised by the same bearing capacity or the same span, respectively
Anchorage and detailing of reinforcement under fire action
In recent years, an increasing attention was devoted to evaluating the effects of temperature exposure on the bond properties between a steel bar and the surrounding concrete, with a lower focus on the effects on bond length and, more in general, on the consistency among existing design models, when considering a fire scenario. The current paper proposes a unified approach for both cast-in and post-installed rebars to evaluate the effects of temperature exposure on bond length and reinforcement detailing in reinforced concrete members in bending subjected to a simulated fire event. Starting from a consistent evaluation of decay of bond properties as a function of temperature, different geometrical configurations of beam/slab to column/wall connections are considered. For a given fire duration, the impact on bond length is evaluated as a function of bar position and size, also focusing on the potential modifications in the overall load-transfer mechanism, when bond properties are excessively impaired

An Indirect Methodology to Evaluate the Rheological Properties of a Digitally Fabricated Concrete Incorporating Corrosion Inhibitors
3D-printed concrete is a groundbreaking innovation in construction,
aiming to reduce environmental impact and speed up building processes. While
current research is primarily focusing on material properties and their adaptability
to the printing process, it is imperative to also consider the structural implications,
particularly in challenging environment. Diverging from traditional concrete construction
methods that involve formwork, compaction, and curing, 3D-printed
concrete introduces a paradigm shift characterized by increased overall porosity
and reduced reinforcement cover thickness. Although these distinctive features
expedite the construction phase, there are concerns about the potential acceleration
of corrosion in steel reinforcements. To enhance the durability of 3D-printed
concrete, there is consideration for directly integrating corrosion inhibitors into
the “ink” mixture. However, this proposition requires meticulous evaluation of
the admixture dosage, since an imbalanced formulation could alter the specific
characteristics of the initial mix, potentially compromising the material’s printability.
Predicting how rheological parameters will respond to selected materials
and dosages poses a significant challenge. The work starts with an experimental
preliminary characterization of rheological properties (via a flow table test) of
3D-printable mixes, sourced from existing literature, and incorporates the effects
of corrosion inhibitors. This methodology is proposed as an alternative to using
a rheometer, simplifying the entire procedure and facilitating streamlined on-site
evaluations of material characteristics. Through this comprehensive analysis, the
objective is not only to leverage the advantages of this cutting-edge technology
but also to address potential challenges, paving the way for a more sustainable
and efficient future in the construction industry
Advances in Wind Turbine Tower Design and Optimization
This work provides a succinct overview of recent advancements in
wind turbine tower design and optimization. Recognizing the critical role of tower
structures in enhancing the efficiency of wind energy harvesting, the review traces
the historical evolution from traditional designs to modern tubular steel, concrete,
and hybrid towers. A focus on taller towers highlights the significance of accessing
higher wind speeds for optimal energy output. Materials science innovations,
including the use of high-strength alloys and composites and of high-performance
cement-based materials, are discussed for their role in achieving lighter yet robust
and better constructable tower structures. In addition, newconstruction techniques
are examined. Optimization methodologies, including computational modelling
and machine learning, are examined, considering genetic algorithms, computational
modelling, and simulation tools, coupled with machine learning algorithms.
The paper concludes with a forward-looking perspective on future developments,
anticipating progress in materials, construction techniques, and ongoing research
initiatives. This concise review serves as a valuable resource for researchers,
engineers, and industry stakeholders engaged in advancing wind turbine tower
technologies
L'art. 147, comma 5, legge fallim. quale norma antiabusiva di contrasto al fenomeno della super-società di fatto
Prendendo spunto da una recente pronuncia della Corte di cassazione, si è studiato l’art. 147, comma 5, legge fallim., alla luce del sistema delle norme “anti-abusive”, quale possibile strumento di repressione del fenomeno della super-società di fatto. Se ne sono poi valutate le implicazioni, tanto sul piano sostanziale, quanto su quello processuale, passando attraverso le figure della società occulta e della società apparente.Taking a cue from a recent judgment of the Court of Cassation, the art. 147, comma 5, legge fallim. has been gauged as an eligible tool to repress the phenomenon of the so called “super-società di fatto”, with regard to the system of “anti-abusive” rules. Its implications have also been considered in a substantial perspective, as well as in a procedural one, exploiting and analyzing the concepts of “società occulta” and “società apparente”
Algoritmi e procedimento decisionale: alcuni recenti arresti della giustizia amministrativa
Con le pronunce in rassegna il Consiglio di Stato, confermando il proprio orientamento con cui viene ammesso il ricorso a sistemi di intelligenza artificiale nel procedimento amministrativo, traccia con maggior chiarezza i principi posti a presidio dei cittadini-utenti del servizio pubblico.
A tal proposito, due elementi assumono rilievo fondamentale: a) la piena conoscibilità a monte del modulo utilizzato e dei criteri applicati (principio di trasparenza); b) l’imputabilità della decisione all’organo titolare del potere, il quale deve poter svolgere la necessaria verifica di logicità e legittimità della scelta e degli esiti affidati all’algoritmo (principio di responsabilità).
Lo scritto, coltivando spunti forniti dalle sentenze che si annotano e sollecitazioni provenienti dallo studio di altri sistemi giuridici, ha l’obiettivo di individuare le modalità operative attraverso cui la p.a. possa/debba agire, e in particolare, propone una lettura del principio di trasparenza in termini di procedimentalizzazione della decisione tesa all’adozione dell’algoritmo.With the rulings under review, the Council of State, confirming its approach to allow the use of a.i. systems in administrative procedures, outlines in a clearer way the principles for the protection of citizens and users of the public service.
In this regard, two elements assume fundamental importance: a) the full knowledge upstream of the module used and the criteria applied (i.e. principle of transparency); b) the imputability of the decision to the body holding the power, which must be able to carry out the necessary verification of the logic and legitimacy of the choice and the results entrusted to the algorithm (i.e. principle of accountability).
The paper, cultivating ideas provided by the decisions that are noted and solicitations coming from the study of other legal systems, aims to identify the operational methods through which the public administration can/must act, and in particular, proposes an interpretation of the principle of transparency in terms of proceduralisation of the decision aimed at the adoption of the algorithm
