    Get PDF
Since the publication of his first work, but especially since his triumphant return to his native country, the writer and painter Mu Xin has become a sort of phenomenon, or even a «myth» in the Chinese cultural landscape, and has initiated a long-standing controversy between two opposing camps. Apart from the trend and marketing mechanisms unique to the Internet age, the author’s particular style is one of the key factors to this exceptional success. Our text attempts a first approach to this work with a special focus on its language style

“Art Is to Sacrifice One’s Death”: The aesthetic and ethic of the Chinese diasporic artist Mu Xin

In his five-year-long world literature lecture series, running from 1989 to 1994, the Chinese diasporic writer-painter Mu Xin (1927-2011) provided a puzzling advice for the group of emerging Chinese artists living in New York: “Art is to sacrifice.” Reading this advice in tandem with other comments on “sacrifice” that Mu Xin provided throughout the lecture series, this study uses the concept of “art is to sacrifice one’s death” to examine the intricate relationship between aesthetics and ethics in Mu Xin’s project of art. The question of diasporic positionality is inherent in the relationship between aesthetic and ethical discourses, since the two discourses themselves were born in a Western tradition that was once foreign to Mu Xin. Examining his life together with his works in different medium, I trace the intellectual genealogy of his works to the legacy of Lu Xun and Lin Fengmian’s debate in the late 1920s. Then, I examine how Mu Xin reinvented their aesthetic-cum-ethical project to shape his role as an artist in the world. Finally, through comparing him to a similar Chinese diasporic artist Gao Xingjian, I put the artistic image that Mu Xin established for himself in relation to the political position that he inhabited as a diasporic artist working across cultural boundaries. I argue that Mu Xin not only vigorously forwarded an ethical project in pursuit of humanness with his advice on art but also envisioned such humanness to be a mediative process of social activity instead of any essential state of being or sentimentality in a singular mind. Through such an artistic project, Mu Xin managed to participate in reforming the static boundaries of culture and nation-state, such that he carried out a political project though fictional means, making the world more adaptive to individuals living within it. </p

Mu Xin : A Double Recluse outside the Tower of Chinese Literature

The Chinese culture sequentially underwent ancient cultural tradition between Pre-Qin and Qing dynasties, the May Fourth new cultural tradition, the cultural tradition of red regime in Yan’an, the tradition of the Cultural Revolution and the official discourse system in recent 30 years after 1978. Those five kinds of cultural tradition are not parallel. It is the process that the latter three traditions destroyed the former two, which results in the cultural ruptures in modern China. The rupture of the cultural traditions and the ineffectiveness of the cultural memories constitute the crisis and predicament of contemporary Chinese literary writing and reading. Mu Xin (1927-2011) is a man of letters, difficult to be classified, in the history of Chinese literature in the 20th century. Because his literature was not in the transmutation and a series of ruptures of the cultural tradition. If we compare Chinese Literature to a tower, then he is not inside the tower. He is the double recluse who strolls outside the tower of Chinese literature. The first significance of recluse for Mu Xin is his real life. The whole life of Mu Xin is the life to recall his past through literature, the life to be reclusive for literature, and the life to educate and perfect himself by means of literature. The second significance of recluse for Mu Xin is that his aesthetic stance and his writing style are so different from the literary discourse and the way of thinking of modern Chinese literature. Mu Xin’s world is wide. He was classified as a diasporic writer. It doesn’t only mean that he still wrote in Chinese after he migrated to New York in 1982, but also means that he had always held a kind of diasporic perspective. He considered that culture (literature) should be holistic and global, and opposed the binary opposition of the tradition and the modernity, of the West and the nation. As for Mu Xin, literature is an integrated world and his hometown in the sense of the inner realm of the conceptual. Therefore his writing can be regarded as a kind of self-diaspora in the worldwide literary homeland. As Professor Tongming Jun Liu considered, the significance of the style of Mu Xin is that Chinese literature acquired extremely rich worldwide connotation in his style

Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

    Get PDF
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed

    Variations on the Author

“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship

Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis

We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Finally, we show by means of an example that our findings have a high practical relevance.information science;Pearson correlation;cosine;similarity measure;author cocitation analysis

Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts

We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. It is argued that increasingly available digital full text research papers make it possible for citation analysis studies to go beyond what the ISI databases have directly supported and to employ more sophisticated methods

    koamabayili/VECTRON-author-checklist: VECTRON author checklist

We have done our best to complete the author checklist relating to the use of animals in the hut study. Note that the objective for the hut study was to evaluate the IRS treatment applications for residual efficacy against Anopheles mosquitoes, including the local An. coluzzii mosquito population. Cows were only used to attract mosquitoes into the huts and no tests were carried out directly on the cows. The author checklist is intended for use with studies where experiments are carried out on animals, which is why we have had such difficulty in completing this for the hut study, as many of the questions do not relate to how the cows were used
