CLAIR-HD - Common Language for Accessibility, Interoperability, and Reusability in Historical Demography

    No full text
Historical demographers have designed schemas and vocabularies to standardize historical data. CLAIR-HD gathered these schemes to create an overview of the existing languages used in historical demography. The state of the field was summarised in 2024 by Mourits, Stapel, and Riswick. This database contains - An output table that summarise how variables are named within historical demography. - An output table that shows the existing open access conversion tables. - The documentation of IDS, Mosaic, and Persons in Context on which the schema table is based. See also https://www.ipums.org, https://mosaic.ipums.org/, https://www.nappdata.org/, and https://personsincontext.org/ for more information. - The documentation of the conversion tables on which the conversion table overview is based. The related output table contains links to the relevant produce pages. Please use the tree function for a clear overview of the files

HSN personal cards - SSD matching subset

The Netherlands has two key databases to study of social inequalities across the life course and over generations: the Historical Sample of the Netherlands (HSN) for persons born in the Netherlands from 1812 until 1922, and the System of Social statistical Datasets (SSD) with register data on all current inhabitants. The HSNDB and Statistics Netherlands (CBS) aimed to establish a Proof of Concept linkage of the HSN and SSD, allowing for the historical life trajectories to be linked forward to contemporary outcomes. For the Proof of Concept we tested whether linkage could be established on the basis of the combination of three birth dates (ego, father, mother), date of marriage, and sex. We developed an initial linking strategy which we validated and refined based on non-unique links and deviating information between HSN and SSD. Additionally, we established a link between the written (HSN) and coded (SSD) places of birth, and used this information in the validation process. The revised linking strategy results in linkage of 77% of the linkable HSN records. The stringent validation criteria of the linking steps and evaluation of the linked result appear to indicate that we provide a successful Proof of Concept for the linkage of the HSN and SSD as conducted by Statistics Netherlands. version 1: Original matching sample version 2: Enriched matching sample version 3: Added Id_mother + Id_father to HSN_RP_child_SSD version 4: Minor update in the standardisation of place names version 5: Bugfixes: (a) recovered children lost in version 2, (b) improved retrieval of children with two HSN RP parents, (c) added IDNR_child from version

Data entry + forum activity log data, birth certificates Suriname

The 'data entry + forum activity log data' contains anonymized information on the transcription process of birth certificates from the Surinameses civil registry. The birth civil certificates were transcribed by 654 volunteers on the Dutch crowdsourcing platform HetVolk from September 2021 until February 2022. The project was completed in 4 batches to account for small changes in the available information on birth certificates. A fifth "puzzle" batch was created for birth certificates that were hard to read. To support data entry, a forum was hosted on Ning. Here volunteers could ask for help, discuss interesting findings, and find look-up tables. 171 volunteers in total posted at least one message on the forum. User accounts on Het Volk and Ning were linked by Thunnis van Oort and Rick Mourits. First, matches were established by automatically matching individuals with an indentical name or e-mail address. Second, we manually checked for matches that we might have missed due to small spelling variations. Third, all established matches were verified by hand. Last, we anonymized the user names to make the data suitable for analysis in line with the GDPR. Data entry log data contains information on the: - volunteer (anonymized userID, linked to forum post log data) - project (batch 1-4, puzzle) - itemID (anonymized certificate identifier) - entry (entry, skipped, or impossible certificate) - date - time Forum post log data contains information on the: - volunteer (anonymized userID, linked to data entry log data) - reaction_on (whether posts replied to a former userID) - topicID (anonymized post topic) - entry (original post or reply) - date - tim
