Perceived Classroom Environment, Sociodemographic Background, and Achievement Goals as Predictors of Students’ Academic Striving
Classroom learning environment is considered to create the framework within which students are striving for success and research has shown that a competitive learning environment is less adaptive than a classroom environment where strivings for mastery and learning are encouraged. Yet, this core finding has not been extensively tested in Turkey where there is a lot of competition in the high school classroom. The main purpose of this thesis was to investigate perceived mastery versus competitive learning environment relates to better learning strategies; also, whether achievement goals would mediate the relation between perceived classroom goal structures and socioeconomic status of family on the one hand and academic achievement and learning striving on the other hand. To address these questions, a cross-sectional design was used in which participants were 369 students (181 males; 178 females; 10 students did not report their gender) from high school in Ankara, Turkey.
Interparental Relationship and Adolescent Adjustment: The Mediating Roles of Psychological Control, Autonomy Support, and Basic Psychological Needs
Guided by the spillover hypothesis and the self-determination theory, the main purpose of the present dissertation is to examine whether interparental relationship dimensions relate to adolescent’ adjustment by means of the parenting and basic psychological needs. Three studies were conducted in the scope of this dissertation.
In Study 1, the relations among interparental conflict (IPC), adolescents’ relational aggression, and loneliness by means of maternal psychological control were longitudinally investigated. Participants were 527 Turkish adolescents (Mage = 14.36 years, SD = 0.33) and 307 mothers (Mage = 41.18 years, SD = 4.47). Analyses through structural equation modeling indicated that IPC (as assessed by both the adolescents and mothers) related positively to maternal psychological control (as assessed again by both of them) which in turn predicted adolescent-reported relational aggression and loneliness, 8 months later.
In Study 2, the associations among interparental conflict to adolescent’s depressive feelings and life satisfaction by means of maternal autonomy support and adolescent need frustration were examined. Participants were 3,075 Turkish adolescents (Mage = 17.11 years, SD = 0.36) and 1,040 mothers (Mage = 41.93 years, SD = 5.15). Results from path analysis showed that interparental conflict related to less maternal autonomy support, and in turn to higher adolescent need frustration. High need frustration, in turn, predicted greater adolescent depressive feelings and lower life satisfaction, 6 months later.
In Study 3, the relations among weekly reports of mother’s interparental conflict, perceived partner responsiveness, and maternal autonomy-support by means of maternal psychological need satisfaction were investigated. During 6 consecutive weeks, 258 mothers (Mage = 41.71 years, SD = 4.78) and their 157 adolescents (Mage = 14.92 years, SD = 1.72) provided weekly reports of the study variables via an online survey. Analyses through multilevel modeling showed that mother’s need satisfaction was predicted by lower levels of interparental conflict and greater levels of perceived partner responsiveness. Maternal need satisfaction, in turn, was positively associated with mother and adolescent reports of maternal autonomy-support. Further, these week-to-week associations were partly moderated by mother’s perfectionism. Results and their implications, as well as the strengths and limitations of the studies, were discussed in the light of the literature.ACCEPTANCE AND APPROVAL i

Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
Variations on the Author
“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis
We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Finally, we show by means of an example that our findings have a high practical relevance.information science;Pearson correlation;cosine;similarity measure;author cocitation analysis
In Search of Quality of Motivation: Antecedents and Correlates of Autono mous Motivation and Achievement Goals in Sport and Physical Education Based on the Self-determination theory (Deci & Ryan, 2000) and on the ac hievement goal perspective (Dweck, 1986; Elliot, 2005), the present doct oral project investigated various correlates and antecedents that may in fluence quality of motivation in sports and physical education settings. With respect to the correlates of quality of motivation, it was shown t hat mastery goals were related to emotional and social adjustment regard less of students perceived competence or peer acceptance and prosocial behavior. Also, it was tested whether experimentally manipulated mastery goals with task-referenced or self-referenced standards yielded differe nt effects on performance and well-being, whereas it was demonstrated th at athletes endorsing performance goals for controlling reasons, as thes e are defined within SDT framework, were more susceptible to report ill- being. Also, further evidence for a link between achievement goals and a utonomous and controlled motivation was provided, and an association bet ween mastery goals and outcome goals and between performance goals and a bility goals was also found. With respect to the antecedents of quality of motivation, the present doctoral research provided evidence of a moti vational model in which the need for competence and autonomous motivatio n mediated the effects of positive competence feedback on intrinsic moti vation, well-being, and performance. Similarly, it demonstrated that the need for autonomy and competence mediated the differential relation of autonomous and controlling styles of corrective feedback to well being, and moral functioning. Last, it showed that autonomy- and relatedness-su pporting environments interact with individuals motivational orientatio ns on the prediction of enjoyment and vitality as it was found that opti mally motivated individuals benefited more when embedded in favorable mo tivational environments. When considered together, these set of studies demonstrated that quality of motivation, as operationalized within both self-determination theory and the achievement goal perspective, is multi faceted, but still important.status: Publishe
Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts
We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued
use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation
counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. It is argued that increasingly available digital full text research papers make it possible for citation analysis studies to go beyond what the ISI databases have directly supported and to employ more
sophisticated methods
koamabayili/VECTRON-author-checklist: VECTRON author checklist
We have done our best to complete the author checklist relating to the use of animals in the hut study. Note that the objective for the hut study was to evaluate the IRS treatment applications for residual efficacy against Anopheles mosquitoes, including the local An. coluzzii mosquito population. Cows were only used to attract mosquitoes into the huts and no tests were carried out directly on the cows. The author checklist is intended for use with studies where experiments are carried out on animals, which is why we have had such difficulty in completing this for the hut study, as many of the questions do not relate to how the cows were used
