Instantaneous healing of micro-fractures during coseismic slip: Evidence from microstructure and Ti in quartz geochemistry within an exhumed pseudotachylyte-bearing fault in tonalite
Exhumed faults within the tonalitic Adamello pluton (Southern Alps) were seismic at depth as indicated by the presence of pseudotachylytes (solidified friction-induced melts). During cooling of tonalite, early-formed joints were first exploited by localized ductile shear zones associated with deposition of quartz veins (at ~ 500 °C), and later by pseudotachylyte-bearing cataclastic faults (at ~ 250–300 °C ambient temperature). Adjacent to pseudotachylytes, quartz of the host tonalite shows pervasive thin (1–10 μm wide) healed micro-fractures and ultra-fine (1–2 μm grain size) recrystallized aggregates along micro-shear zones. Under cathodoluminescence (CL) the healed micro-fractures have a darker gray shade than the host “magmatic” quartz that reflects a change in Ti concentrations ([Ti]) as indicated by NanoSIMS measurements. [Ti] vary from 35–55 ppm in the CL-lighter host quartz to 10–13 ppm along the CL-darker healed micro-fractures. These [Ti] were inherited by the ultra-fine recrystallized aggregates that overprinted both the magmatic quartz and the healed micro-fractures during the high temperature transient related to frictional seismic slip. Based on Ti-in-quartz thermometry, we infer that micro-fracture healing occurred at higher temperatures than the ambient temperatures of faulting (250–300 °C at 0.2 GPa), for which [Ti] < 1 ppm would be expected. Micro-fracture healing can be ascribed to the stage of seismic slip of faults on the basis of the observation that: (i) they are absent in the host rock surrounding high-T quartz veins un-exploited by faults; and (ii) they locally occur at the tip of pseudotachylyte injection veins filling new fractures developed during the propagation of the earthquake rupture. The relatively high [Ti] of micro-fractures are therefore interpreted to reflect quartz healing by a fluid overheated during the initial stages of frictional seismic slip and escaping from fault surface through the damage zone. This suggests that, in the presence of fluids, thermal pressurization of the fault did not occur and did not prevent frictional melting. The small-scale microstructures and geochemistry of quartz in the wall of the studied paleo-seismic fault record a complex deformational history, referable to the short-lived (on the order of 104 s) thermal anomaly induced by frictional seismic slip, that includes both micro-fracture healing and recrystallization. This microstructural assemblage of the natural exhumed fault provides a key for understanding the mechanics of an earthquake source
On names in Mažuranić’s epic The Death of Smail-Agha Čengić (Smrt Smail-age Čengića)
Starting from his overall lexicographic approach to Mažuranić’s epic The Death of Smail-Agha Čengić, the author focuses his attention here on the analysis of its corpus of names. Most studies of the epic to date have not paid special attention to the onomastic material although it was partly incorporated into Benešić’s Dictionary of the Croatian Literary Language. The author believes that a dictionary of words used in an individual literary work or in complete works of an author, i.e. a Writer’s Dictionary, should contain all the words with their meanings, including proper names (anthroponyms, place names and ethnonyms), especially since proper names as a category do not rank very low on a frequency scale. Even if a name appeared only once in a given work (e.g. in Mažuranić’s The Death of Smail-Agha Čengić), it should nevertheless be included in a dictionary. In compiling a complete dictionary of Mažuranić’s poem The Death of Smail- Agha Čengić, the author has found that the poem contains slightly less than 6.000 words (including all word forms), or 1.661 headwords used in 1.134 verses and 5 cantos of the epic: Agovanje, Noćnik, Četa, Harač and Kob. The corpus contains approximately eighty forms of onomastic names and their adjectival derivations, which can be considered as onomastic headwords. The author lists names in the alphabetical order together with the number of their occurrences and variants (in brackets), thus presenting their collocations as well. They will subsequently be listed according to semantic categories and frequency
GAVELLA’S READER’S VIEW ON THE POEM DEATH OF SMAIL-AGA ČENGIĆ
This paper analyses Gavella’s essay called Poetic structure of Mažuranić’s Smail-aga (1961) which, based on the example of canonical literary text, summarizes the author’s principal and theoretical views about the relationship between literature and dramatic performance. Following his insight that dramatization of a literary text, in the first place, requires a reading-interpretative effort kept within the frames of textual analysis of linguistic material, the second part of this paper represents the reading of controversial textual points in Mažuranić’s poem in the light of Gavella’s interpretative guidelines. At the same time, metatextual signals are shown to be essential for understanding Smail-aga, the analysis of the correlation between narrator and author, the status of the storyteller, and the associated shift in understanding of poetic language from constative to performative
Testing the evolutionary link between submillimetre galaxies and quasars: CO observations of QSOs at z~2
We have used the IRAM Plateau de Bure millimetre interferometer and the UKIRT 1–5 μm Imager Spectrometer (UIST) to test the connection between the major phases of spheroid growth and nuclear accretion by mapping CO emission in nine submillimetre-detected QSOs at z= 1.7–2.6 with black hole (BH) masses derived from near-infrared spectroscopy. When combined with one QSO obtained from the literature, we present sensitive CO(3–2) or CO(2–1) observations of 10 submillimetre-detected QSOs selected at the epoch of peak activity in both QSOs and submillimetre (submm) galaxies (SMGs). CO is detected in 5/6 very optically luminous (MB∼−28) submm-detected QSOs with BH masses MBH≃ 109–1010 M⊙, confirming the presence of large gas reservoirs of Mgas≃ 3.4 × 1010 M⊙. Our BH masses and dynamical mass constraints on the host spheroids suggest, at face value, that these optically luminous QSOs at z= 2 lie about an order of magnitude above the local BH–spheroid relation, MBH/Msph, although this result is dependent on the size and inclination of the CO-emitting region. However, we find that their BH masses are ∼30 times too large and their surface density is ∼300 times too small to be related to typical SMGs in an evolutionary sequence. Conversely, we measure weaker CO emission in four fainter (MB∼−25) submm-detected QSOs with properties, BH masses (MBH≃ 5 × 108 M⊙), and surface densities similar to SMGs. These QSOs appear to lie near the local MBH/Msph relation, making them plausible ‘transition objects’ in the proposed evolutionary sequence linking QSOs to the formation of massive young galaxies and BHs at high redshift. We show that SMGs have a higher incidence of bimodal CO line profiles than seen in our QSO sample, which we interpret as an effect of their relative inclinations, with the QSOs seen more face-on. Finally, we find that the gas masses of the four fainter submm-detected QSOs imply that their star formation episodes could be sustained for ∼10 Myr, and are consistent with representing a phase in the formation of massive galaxies which overlaps a preceding SMG starburst phase, before subsequently evolving into a population of present-day massive ellipticals
Ivan Mažuranić and his Contribution to Croatian Literature: For the 170th Anniversary of the Epic Poem The Death of Smail-Age Čengić
The author presents an overview of the work of Ivan Mažuranić (1814-1890) the prominent Croatian writer and politician born in Novi Vinodolski and famous as ban-commoner due to his non-aristocratic origin. The article was written upon the occasion of the recent anniversaries connected to his life, 125 years since his death (1890) and 170 years from the creation of his most important literally work, the epic poem ‘The Death of Smail-Age Čengić’ (1845).He was an exceptional person in whom patriotism, a talented poet and political wisdom were all combined. He successfully completed the final parts of Gundulić’s work ‘Osman’ and in doing so revived Gundulić’s authentic poetic style. He dealt intensively with poetry for a decade, from 1835 to 1845 when the epic poem ‘The Death of Smail-Age Čengić’ was created. He wrote about human violence and arrogance, and in literally and political activities the fight of the Illyrians for the introduction of Croatian to be the official language in the Croatian parliament in 1847 inspired him
53Mn-53Cr systematics of sphalerite in enstatite chondrites
We investigated the 53Mn-53Cr isotopic composition of a suite of enstatite chondrites by in situ analyses of various mineral phases with the Cameca IMS 1280-HR ion probe at Heidelberg, Germany, and a Cameca NanoSIMS at Paris, France. Only in sphalerite we found anomalies in 53Cr/52Cr-ratios correlating with 55Mn/52Cr which are due to decay of short-lived 53Mn (t1/2 = 3.7 Ma). A sphalerite in the EH-impact melt LAP 02225 showed the largest excess of 53Cr, with 53Cr/52Cr-ratios ranging up to 2.2. The calculated initial 53Mn/55Mn-ratios are within the range of previous Mn-Cr studies. We observed a spatial variation within a large sphalerite in LAP 02225, translating in distinct initial 53Mn/55Mn values. In case of the EL3 chondrite MAC 88136 the initial 53Mn/55Mn derived for one sphalerite is at the lower end of previously reported values and may reflect a variable influence of alteration-induced exchange of common Cr. This is supported by the total reset of the 53Cr/52Cr-ratio in another sphalerite in contact with an alteration vein irrespective of high Mn/Cr-ratios. Our observed initial 53Mn/55Mn-ratios of Sahara 97158, Indarch and EET 96135 correspond to the I-Xe systematics and hence, show that sphalerites can preserve reasonable age information. For Indarch however, if compared with other initial 53Mn/55Mn values from literature, a considerable scatter is obvious. This clearly demonstrates that the Mn-Cr system in sphalerite can be disturbed by various, still poorly investigated, processes (e.g., by thermal events, weathering, diffusion-controlled remobilization). Future application of Mn-Cr dating to sphalerite in enstatite chondrites thus requires a better understanding of how such processes influence the Mn-Cr systematics and demands for tools to identify the undoubtly present sphalerites carrying a true chronologic information

Strategies of Enunciative Erasure and Position Taken by the Author-Researcher Case of Doctoral Student Articles
The main purpose of this article is to examine the construction of authorship in scientific articles written by Algerian doctoral students. We focused on the personal subject pronouns (nous and on) as the main mark of the expression of subjectivity, trying to see how the identity of the author is constituted in the texts of these young researchers. The observations indicates tyhat, dispite the requirement of objectvity that caracterireres the discursive genre in research, the writings of doctotoral studients continue to include markers of the first person.
