    Testing the cores of first ascent red giant stars using the period spacing of g modes

    In the context of the determination of stellar properties using asteroseismology, we study the influence of rotation and convective-core overshooting on the properties of red giant stars. We used models in order to investigate the effects of these mechanisms on the asymptotic period spacing of gravity modes (ΔΠ1) of red-giant stars that ignite He burning in degenerate conditions (M ≤ 2.0 M⊙). We also compare the predictions of these models with Kepler observations. For a given Δv, ΔΠ1 depends not only on the stellar mass, but also on mixing processes that can affect the structure of the core. We find that in the case of more evolved red-giant-branch stars and regardless of the transport processes occurring in their interiors, the observed ΔΠ1 can provide information as to their stellar luminosity, within ~10-20 per cent. In general, the trends of ΔΠ1 with respect to mass and metallicity that are observed in Kepler red-giant stars are well reproduced by the models

    Characterising the AGB bump and its potential to constrain mixing processes in stellar interiors

    Context. In the 1990s, theoretical studies motivated the use of the asymptotic giant branch bump (AGBb) as a standard candle given the weak dependence between its luminosity and stellar metallicity. Because of the small size of observed asymptotic giant branch (AGB) samples, detecting the AGBb is not an easy task. However, this has now been made possible thanks to the wealth of data collected by the CoRoT, Kepler, and TESS space-borne missions. Aims. It is well-known that the AGB bump provides valuable information on the internal structure of low-mass stars, particularly on mixing processes such as core overshooting during the core He-burning phase. Here, we investigate the dependence of the AGBb position on stellar parameters such as the stellar mass and metallicity based on the calibration of stellar models to observations. Methods. In this context, we analysed ∼4000 evolved giants observed by Kepler and TESS, including red giant branch (RGB) stars and AGB stars, for which asteroseismic and spectrometric data are available. By using statistical mixture models, we detected the AGBb both in frequency at maximum oscillation power, ?max, and in effective temperature, Teff. Then, we used the Modules for Experiments in Stellar Astrophysics (MESA) stellar evolution code to model AGB stars and match the AGBb occurrence with observations. Results. From the observations, we were able to derive the AGBb location in 15 bins of mass and metallicity. We noted that the higher the mass, the later the AGBb occurs in the evolutionary track, which agrees with theoretical works. Moreover, we found a slight increase in the luminosity at the AGBb when the metallicity increases. By fitting those observations with stellar models, we noticed that low-mass stars (M = 1:0 M ) require a small core overshooting region during the core He-burning phase. This core overshooting extent increases toward high mass; however, above M = 1:5 M , we found that the AGBb location cannot be reproduced with a realistic He-core overshooting alone. Thus, additional mixing processes have to be invoked instead. Conclusions. The observed dependence on metallicity complicates the application of the AGBb as a standard candle. Moreover, different mixing processes may occur according to stellar mass. At low mass (M = 1:5 M ), the AGBb location can be used to constrain the He-core overshooting. At high mass (M = 1:5 M ), an additional mixing induced, for instance, by rotation is needed to reproduce what is seen in observations

    Investigating Gaia EDR3 parallax systematics using asteroseismology of cool giant stars observed by Kepler, K2, and TESS. II. Deciphering Gaia parallax systematics using red clump stars

    We analyse Gaia EDR3 parallax systematics as a function of magnitude and sky location using a recently published catalogue of 12 500 asteroseismic red-giant star distances. We selected ~3500 red clump (RC) stars of similar chemical composition as the optimal subsample for this purpose because (1) their similar luminosity allows for straightforward interpretation of trends with apparent magnitude; (2) RC stars are the most distant stars in our sample at a given apparent magnitude, so uncertainties related to asteroseismic radii and distances are the smallest; (3) and they provide the largest sample of intrinsically similar stars. We performed a detailed assessment of systematic uncertainties relevant for parallax offset estimation based on the asteroseismic distances. Specifically, we investigated (1) the impact of measuring the basic asteroseismic quantities νmax and 〈Δν〉 using different pipelines, (2) uncertainties related to extinction, (3) the impact of adopting spectroscopic information from different surveys, and (4) blending issues related to photometry. Following this assessment, we adopted for our baseline analysis the asteroseismic parameters measured in Elsworth et al. (2020, Res. Notes Am. Astron. Soc., 4, 177) and spectroscopy from the Apache Point Observatory Galactic Evolution Experiment (DR17), and we further restricted the sample to low-extinction (AV ≤ 0.5 mag) RC stars with quality astrometric solutions from Gaia EDR3, as indicated by RUWE < 1.4. We then investigated both the parallax offset relative to the published Gaia EDR3 parallaxes and the residual parallax offset after correcting Gaia EDR3 parallaxes following Lindegren et al. (2021, A&A, 649, A4). We found residual parallax offsets very close to zero (-1.6 ± 0.5 (stat.)±10 (syst.) μas) for stars fainter than G > 11 mag in the initial Kepler field, suggesting that the Lindegren parallax offset corrections are adequate in this magnitude range. For 17 K2 campaigns in the same magnitude range, the residual parallax offset is +16.5 ± 1.7 (stat.)±10 (syst.) μas. At brighter magnitudes (G ≤ 11 mag), we found inconsistent residual parallax offsets between the Kepler field, 17 K2 campaigns, and the TESS southern continuous viewing zone, with differences of up to 60 μas. This contradicts the studies that suggest a monotonic trend between magnitude and residual parallax offsets and instead suggests a significant dependence on sky location at bright magnitudes due to a lack of bright physical pairs being available to determine the parallax offset corrections. Inspection of the 17 K2 campaigns allowed for investigation of parallax offsets as a function of ecliptic longitude and revealed a possible signal. Finally, we estimated the absolute magnitude of the red clump and obtained MKsRC = -1.650 ± 0.025 mag in the 2MASS Ks band and MGRC = (0.432 ± 0.004) - (0.821 ± 0.033) · (Teff [K]-4800 K)/1000 K [mag] in the Gaia G-band

    Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

    The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed

    “Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship

    Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis

    We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature.     Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts

    We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. It is argued that increasingly available digital full text research papers make it possible for citation analysis studies to go beyond what the ISI databases have directly supported and to employ more sophisticated methods

    Evidence of structural discontinuities in the inner core of red-giant stars

    Red giants are stars in the late stages of stellar evolution. Because they have exhausted the supply of hydrogen in their core, they burn the hydrogen in the surrounding shell . Once the helium in the core starts fusing, the star enters the clump phase, which is identified as a striking feature in the color-magnitude diagram. Since clump stars share similar observational properties, they are heavily used in astrophysical studies, as probes of distance, extinction through the galaxy, galaxy density, and stellar chemical evolution. In this work, we perform the detailed observational characterization of the deepest layers of clump stars using asteroseismic data from Kepler. We find evidence for large core structural discontinuities in about 6.7% of the stars in our sample, implying that the region of mixing beyond the convective core boundary has a radiative thermal stratification. These stars are otherwise similar to the remaining stars in our sample, which may indicate that the building of the discontinuities is an intermittent phenomenon
