    The exocrine pancreatic secretion in pigs and its hormonal regulation as influenced by carbohydrates and fats given per os or infused intraduodenally

    In the present study the influence of carbohydrates in the form of potato fibre (NSP) and of different fats on the exocrine pancreatic secretion and on the regulative hormonal mechanisms was investigated. When feeding a diet supplemented with 2 potato fibre all measured parameters, e.g. volume of pancreatic secretion, protein output and total trypsin, lipase and alpha-amylase activities increased in pancreatic juice. Simultaneously there was a trend towards a decrease in plasma concentration of CCK. After the intraduodenal infusion of medium chain triglycerol (mct: glyceroltricaprylat), long chain triglycerol (lct: glyceroltristearat) or vegetable oils (olive oil or coconut oil) in all treatments a prandial peak was found as a direct reaction on feed intake for volume of secretion, total protein and colipase contents as well as the total activities of trypsin and lipase. After application of mct the secretion course occured in two phases. In phase 1 a parallel prandial increase in volume of secretion, total protein and colipse content as well as total activities of trypsin and lipase was found. For the same parameters in the second phase 60 min postprandially much lower values were observed compared to the preprandial values. The courses of the curves differed for total lipase activities. The diurnal course of plasma levels of CKK and PYY was not influenced. After coconut oil treatment the course of volume secretion was characterized by 2 phases. After a prandial peak in phase 1 the values decreased by 100 below the preprandial starting values. After the application of olive oil the specific lipase activity was elevated five times. In case of coconut oil there was only a prandial increase by 2.5. It is suggested that the exocrine pancreas responds differently in its secretion to different fat sources. Adaptation is probably regulated through a feedback-mechanism whereas CCK and PYY are of minor importance. Die Aufnahme einer Diät mit 2 einer NSP-Matrix induzierte eine erhöhte Pankreassekretion und steigerte die Menge an Gesamtprotein sowie die Gesamtaktivitäten Trypsin, Lipase und alpha-Amylase im Pankreassekret. Gleichzeitig nahm tendenziell die CCK-Konzentration im Plasma ab. Bei der intraduodenalen Applikation von Glyceroltricaprylat (medium chain triglycerol, mct), Glyceroltristearat (long chain triglycerid, lct), Olivenöl und Kokosöl wurde in allen Behandlungen ein prandialer Peak als direkte Reaktion auf die Futteraufnahme für die Volumensekretion, den Gesamtprotein- und Colipasegehalt sowie für die Gesamtaktivitäten von Trypsin und Lipase beobachtet. Nach Infusion von mct war der Verlauf der Sekretion 2-phasig. In Phase 1 wurde ein paralleler prandialer Anstieg der Volumensekretion, des Gesamtprotein- und Colipasegehaltes sowie der Gesamtaktivitäten an Trypsin und Lipase festgestellt. In Phase 2 ergaben sich für diese Parameter 60 min postprandial deutlich niedrigere Werte gegenüber den praeprandialen Werten. Die Verläufe der Kurven für die Gesamtaktivitäten an Lipase unterschieden sich. Der diurnale Verlauf der Plasmakonzentrationen an CCK und PYY war nicht beeinflußt. Der zweiphasige Verlauf der Volumensekretion nach der Infusion von Kokosöl führte nach einem prandialen Peak (Phase 1) in Phase 2 um 100 unter die Ausgangswerte. Nach Infusion von Olivenöl stieg die spezifische Lipaseaktiviät um das 5-fache. Bei Infusion von Kokosöl wurde nur ein 2.5-facher prandialer Anstieg beobachtet. Die Ergebnisse zeigen, daß unterschiedliche Fette einen unterschiedlichen Einfluß auf das exokrine Pankreas ausüben. Die Adaptation wird wahrscheinlich über einen Feedback-Mechanismus gesteuert wobei diese Steuerung nur untergeordnet durch CCK und PYY beeinflußt wird. Vermutlich wirken andere Hormone wie z.B.     Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

    The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed.     “Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship

    Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis

    We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature.     Variation in chemical composition and physical characteristics of cereal grains from different genotypes

    Genotypes of cereal grains, including winter barley (n = 21), maize (n = 27), oats (n = 14), winter rye (n = 22), winter triticale (n = 21) and winter wheat (n = 29), were assayed for their chemical composition and physical characteristics as part of the collaborative research project referred to as GrainUp. Genotypes of one grain species were grown on the same site, except maize. In general, concentrations of proximate nutrients were not largely different from feed tables. The coefficient of variation (CV) for the ether extract concentration of maize was high because the data pool comprised speciality maize bred for its high oil content. A subset of 8 barley, 20 rye, 20 triticale and 20 wheat samples was analysed to differ significantly in several carbohydrate fractions. Gross energy concentration of cereal grains could be predicted from proximate nutrient concentration with good accuracy. The mean lysine concentration of protein was the highest in oats (4.2 g/16 g N) and the lowest in wheat (2.7 g/16 g N). Significant differences were also detected in the concentrations of macro elements as well as iron, manganese, zinc and copper. Concentrations of arsenic, cadmium and lead were below the limit of detection. The concentration of lower inositol phosphates was low, but some inositol pentaphosphates were detected in all grains. In barley, relatively high inositol tetraphosphate concentration also was found. Intrinsic phytase activity was the highest in rye, followed by triticale, wheat, barley and maize, and it was not detectable in oats. Substantial differences were seen in the thousand seed weight, test weight, falling number and extract viscoelasticity characteristics. The study is a comprehensive overview of the composition of different cereal grain genotypes when grown on the same location. The relevance of the variation in composition for digestibility in different animal species will be subject of other communications

    Efficiency and productivity in pig nutrition

    The efficient use of feed ingredients in diets for pigs is an important determinant of the productivity in modern pig production systems. Thus, there is a need to accurately estimate the feeding value of various feed ingredients. Several factors have to be considered for the adequate nutritional evaluation of feedstuffs. These include information (i) on the content of energy yielding nutrients (e.g. starch, sugars, lipids, protein), (ii) the digestibility and post absorptive utilization of nutrients, in particular indispensable amino acids, (iii) the physico-chemical characteristics (e.g. solubility, viscosity) of feedstuffs, but also (iv) potential effects of feed ingredients on pigs? voluntary feed intake and (v) effects of specific feed ingredients on animal product quality (e.g. fatty acid composition) need to be identified. Moreover, so called anti-nutritional factors (ANF?s) have been recognized as important factors that may negatively affect efficiency and productivity in pig nutrition. Some of the most important ANF?s present in feedstuffs which are frequently used in pig nutrition will be addressed in greater detail in the following. The EU-wide ban on the use of protein from animal sources in 2001 contributed to an increased demand for plant protein sources in the feeding of livestock. However, most protein-rich feedstuffs of plant origin contain various kinds of ANF?s that interfere with the utilization of nutrients, thus limiting their use particularly in the nutrition of non-ruminant animals such as pigs and poultry. As a result, depressions in growth performance and animal health due to a variety of mechanisms including reducing protein digestibility, binding to various nutrients or damaging the intestinal wall, thereby lowering digestive efficiency, were observed. Major ANF?s that interfere with nutrient digestion and absorption in non-ruminants include protease inhibitors, lectins, tannins, alkaloids, pyrimidine glycosides, α-galactosides, glucosinolates, and sinapins. The type and content of these ANFs may vary considerably among different feedstuffs, moreover, many feedstuffs contain several ANFs, and the amount of ANFs may vary both between and within varieties, due to differences in plant?s growing conditions and genetics. Protease inhibitors and lectins are most significant for legume seeds (soybeans, peas, faba beans, lupins), tannins are present in rapeseed, faba beans and peas, whereas glucosinolates and sinapins dominate in rapeseed. Finally, alkaloids and α-galactosides are important in lupins, and pyrimidine glycosides can generally be found in faba beans. However, due to significant progress in plant breeding, grain legume and oilseed cultivars with negligible low contents of ANF?s are commercially available. Moreover, the application of refined processing technologies designed to reduce the content of ANF?s in feedstuffs has proven to be an efficient tool. In particular, the use of hydrothermal treatment procedures during feed processing substantially reduces the activity of several heat-labile ANFs such as lectins and protease inhibitors but contents of tannins and glucosinolates are diminished as well

    Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts

    We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. It is argued that increasingly available digital full text research papers make it possible for citation analysis studies to go beyond what the ISI databases have directly supported and to employ more sophisticated methods
