Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Variations on the Author
“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis
We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Inhibition of Hendra virus fusion
Hendra virus (HeV) is a recently identified paramyxovirus that is fatal in humans and could be used as an agent of bioterrorism. The HeV receptor-binding protein (G) is required in order for the fusion protein (F) to mediate fusion, and analysis of the triggering/activation of HeV F by G should lead to strategies for interfering with this key step in viral entry. HeV F, once triggered by the receptor-bound G, by analogy with other paramyxovirus F proteins, undergoes multistep conformational changes leading to a six-helix bundle (6HB) structure that accomplishes fusion of the viral and cellular membranes. The ectodomain of paramyxovirus F proteins contains two conserved heptad repeat regions (HRN and HRC) near the fusion peptide and the transmembrane domains, respectively. Peptides derived from the HRN and HRC regions of F are proposed to inhibit fusion by preventing F, after the initial triggering step, from forming the 6HB structure that is required for fusion. HeV peptides have previously been found to be effective at inhibiting HeV fusion. However, we found that a human parainfluenza virus 3 F-peptide is more effective at inhibiting HeV fusion than the comparable HeV-derived peptide. Copyright © 2006, American Society for Microbiology. STRUCTURAL REARRANGEMENTS IN THE PARAMYXOVIRUS FUSION COMPLEX IN THE PRESENCE OF A NOVEL ANTIVIRAL.
Human parainfluenza virus type 3 (HPIV3), an enveloped virus representative of human paramyxoviruses, enters cells by fusing directly with the cell membrane. The viral receptor-binding glycoprotein hemagglutinin-neuraminidase (HN) binds to cellular receptors and activates the viral fusion protein (F) to its fusion-ready state; the transition of F to its final post-fusion state enables the merger of viral and cell membranes. HN is comprised of a transmembrane domain, a stalk that interacts with F, and a globular head, and is present on the infected cell as a dimer of dimers. Crystal structures show HN either with the heads flipped down partially covering the stalk, or with heads up exposing the stalk. Our previous analysis of HPIV3 particles using negative-stain electron tomography showed that prior to receptor engagement the surface of viral particles bear a continuous coat of spikes with two layers of alternating density reflecting the configuration of complexed HN and F with the globular heads of HN oriented upwards. HN and F are complexed prior to receptor binding, and the transition to a heads-up conformation does not drive the F-activation that occurs upon HN’s receptor engagement. We aim to discover how receptor engagement activates the structural changes in HN and F that lead to membrane merger and infection.
To capture intermediate states in this process, we used a small molecule receptor-mimic (CM9) that we have shown to interact with HN and thereby induce F-triggering in the absence of receptor engagement, thus inactivating the virus. We hypothesize that in the presence of this small molecule HN and F are in contact and F is converted to its post-fusion state. To this end, purified HPIV3 preparations were incubated with CM9 and the structure and arrangement of HN/F are being analyzed by negative stain electron microscopy and cryo-electron tomography. Parallel biological and biochemical experiments demonstrate that CM9 inactivates virus and inhibits viral infectivity in cell culture, ex vivo, and in animals, and that interaction of CM9 with HN results in conversion of F to protease sensitivity as an indicator of conformational transition. We expect to observe the intermediate between pre- and post-fusion F in the presence of a lipid-conjugated peptide that binds the transitional state of F, and in future studies we aim to develop this new antiviral target while identifying the key interactions between native HN and F that result in fusion activatio
Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts
We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued
use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation
counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. It is argued that increasingly available digital full text research papers make it possible for citation analysis studies to go beyond what the ISI databases have directly supported and to employ more

Mechanism of interference mediated by human parainfluenza virus type 3 infection
Viral interference is characterized by the resistance of infected cells to infection by a challenge virus. Mechanisms of viral interference have not been characterized for human parainfluenza virus type 3 (HPF3), and the possible role of the neuraminidase (receptor-destroying) enzyme of the hemagglutinin-neuraminidase (HN) glycoprotein has not been assessed. To determine whether continual HN expression results in depletion of the viral receptors and thus prevents entry and cell fusion, we tested whether cells expressing wild-type HPF3 HN are resistant to viral infection. Stable expression of wild-type HN-green fluorescent protein (GFP) on cell membranes in different amounts allowed us to establish a correlation between the level of HN expression, the level of neuraminidase activity, and the level of protection from HPF3 infection. Cells with the highest levels of HN expression and neuraminidase activity on the cell surface were most resistant to infection by HPF3. To determine whether this resistance is attributable to the viral neuraminidase, we used a cloned variant HPF3 HN that has two amino acid alterations in HN leading to the loss of detectable neuraminidase activity. Cells expressing the neuraminidase-deficient variant HN-GFP were not protected from infection, despite expressing HN on their surface at levels even higher than the wild-type cell clones. Our results demonstrate that the HPF3 HN-mediated interference effect can be attributed to the presence of an active neuraminidase enzyme activity and provide the first definitive evidence that the mechanism for attachment interference by a paramyxovirus is attributable to the viral neuraminidase

We have done our best to complete the author checklist relating to the use of animals in the hut study. Note that the objective for the hut study was to evaluate the IRS treatment applications for residual efficacy against Anopheles mosquitoes, including the local An. coluzzii mosquito population. Cows were only used to attract mosquitoes into the huts and no tests were carried out directly on the cows. The author checklist is intended for use with studies where experiments are carried out on animals, which is why we have had such difficulty in completing this for the hut study, as many of the questions do not relate to how the cows were used
