Il turismo lento come occasione di pianificazione territoriale e di rinnovamento urbano: Il caso del Cammino di Santiago = Slow tourism as occasion of regional planning and urban regeneration: The case of the Way of St. James
The Way of St. James is one of the most emblematic case of slow tourism which innervates the entire northern Spanish territory. The contemporary history of the Way was born in the early 1990s, thanks to its great semantic and cultural revival. The success achieved is accompanied by a redesign of the territories crossed by the Way. The article aims to show how the main choices of regional planning and urban regeneration have guided the development of the Way from the 1990 to today
Urbanistica Fragile. Sei tattiche per ripensare la pianificazione locale con linee lente e spazi aperti
Cosa significa occuparsi oggi di urbanistica e di fragilità territoriale? Come farlo?
Marginality: From Theory to Practices
The essay tackles the concept of regional marginality, by presenting the main open fields of discussion regarding: the criteria by which to identify the marginal regions, how to measure marginality and the nature of the dynamics between center and periphery. Focusing on these three aspects, the paper concentrates on the relation between theories and consequent practices. Indeed, it is demonstrated how starting from different ideas it is possible to arrive at completely different hypothesis of actions. The paper aims at providing a critical reading about answers given to these complex questions. What makes a region marginal in respect to another? How to measure and represent this phenomenon? Can the unbalanced relationship between core and periphery change in time? If yes, should public policies try to rebalance such relationship? In which way? In the conclusion, an approach to face the issue of marginality is proposed, in the form of “line-based projects”, in opposition to the traditional “point-based projects”
Genesis of the Volume
This volume is a contribution to the Italian and international debate on marginality,
territorial imbalances and public policies that support “inner”, “peripheral”,
“declining” and “fragile” territories. This subject has been widely discussed, especially
in the field of economic and urban studies, both in the past and in recent times.
Therefore, this text has not be written with the presumption of being innovative, nor
to deepen an unexplored theme. Instead, it is generated by the need to rework and
disseminate the results of this lively debate.
This volume was born in September 2019, when a group of PhD students and
post-doctoral fellows of the Department of Architecture and Urban Studies of the
Politecnico di Milano, imagined for the first time a network that would connect young
Italian researchers around the theme of inner areas. The reason why this idea was
born may be easily explained
Who is interested in developing the way of Saint James? The pilgrimage from faith to tourism
The Way of St. James in Spain is the main European pilgrimage route. Currently, it is a cultural, tourist, monumental, spiritual, and sports route. For this reason, the paper aims to discuss the concept of the “Polysemy of The Way”, by analysing how the new pilgrims’ motivations are creating an inclusive and complex space, which is making a shift from religious space to a multifaceted tourism reality. We study the characterisation and interaction of the new actors involved in its development, maintenance and promotion. As a result, its original “space of faith” is now a “live heritage space”, thanks to the rehabilitation of routes, monuments, and landscapes. The combination of these motivational and spatial transformations enhances the factors of post-secular pilgrimage, such as slow mobility, the liminality and the sense of community, which the same actors assume as priorities for territorial management
Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
Variations on the Author
“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
