The vanishing author in computer-generated works: a critical analysis of recent Australian case law

    No full text
Abstract The use of software is ubiquitous in the creation of many copyright works, yet the requirement in copyright law that every work have a human author who engages in independent intellectual effort means that its use may prevent copyright subsistence. Several recent Australian cases have refocused attention on authorship as an essential criterion of copyright subsistence, and these cases suggest that much computer-produced output may be authorless and thus lack copyright protection. This article, the first in a two-part series, analyses how each case deals with the question of authorship of computer-produced works and why the use of software diminishes copyright protection for a significant number of computer-generated works. The article critiques the application of conventional notions of human authorship developed in the pre-computer age to modern productions and suggests alternative approaches to authorship that satisfy both the major objectives of copyright policy and the need to adapt to the computer age. The article argues that, without a broader judicial approach to authorship of computer-generated works, Parliament must remedy the lacuna in protection for these ‘authorless’ works. Possible solutions for reform are suggested. In a forthcoming article, the author comprehensively examines those reform proposals

Der nominierte Film hier: The Fantastic Flying Books of Mr. Morris Lessmore from Moonbot Studios on Vimeo. [via Nerdcore]]]

Investigation of the interaction of water with the calcite {1014} surface using ab-initio simulation

    No full text
Density functional theory calculations were employed to explore the interaction between water and the {1014} surface of calcite. In addition a defective {1014} surface and stepped surfaces in contact with water were investigated. A series of percentage water coverages and water configurations were explored, including dissociated water states. Static relaxations found associated water to be favourable on the {1014} surface, although a metastable dissociated state 1.77eV higher in energy was found. Molecular dynamics (MD) simulations of low water coverage reveal fluctuations in the H-O water bond when the H atom is directed towards a surface CO3 ion. Desorption of an H2O molecule was observed in simulations above 900K. Water was found to be strongly bound to the perfect {1014} surface, with an adsorption energy of -0.91eV. MD simulations of a defective {1014} surface found water to favour dissociation at CO3 vacancies. However, water at Ca vacancies diused across the surface to form a bond with the nearest surface Ca ion. Water was also found to favour an associated state at both acute and obtuse steps. On all these imperfect surfaces water was found to adsorb strongly to the surface, with adsorption energies ranging from -0.99eV to -1.60eV

Ab Initio Prediction of Metal-Organic Framework Structures

    No full text
Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have emerged as highly versatile materials with applications in gas storage and separation, solar light energy harvesting and photocatalysis. The design of new MOFs, however, has been hampered by the lack of computational methods for ab initio crystal structure prediction, which could be used to direct experimental synthesis. Here we report the first ab intio method for MOF structure prediction, and test it against a diverse set of MOFs, with differences in topology, metal coordination geometry and ligand binding sites. In all cases our calculations produced structures which match experiment, proving the versatility of our procedure for MOF structure prediction. With our new methodology for ab initio structure prediction, current approaches to MOF design are set to change towards a more sustainable theory-driven materials development.<br /

The aim of this project is to get a better engine with good petrol consumption and with the add of a electrical wiring with instrumental for a 1970 Morris Marina 1.3 cc four stroke engine. To achieved better consumption the cylinder chamber, inlet part and intake manifold have been carefully and thoroughly grounded and polished and engine should) properly tunned according to specification. When this project was completely done it can be used for teaching practically for a subject of Automobile Technology

Ab initio pair potentials at metal-ceramic interfaces

    No full text
A systematic approach is proposed to obtain the interfacial interatomic potentials. By inverting ab initio adhesive energy curves for the metal-MgO ceramic interfaces, We derive interfacial potentials between Ag and O2-, Ag and Mg2+, Al and O2-, Al and Mg2+. The interfacial potentials, obtained from this method, demonstrate general features of bondings between metal atoms and ceramic ions
