Evidence for a shift from true place navigation to directional responding in one variant of the morris water task.
No full textPrevious work from our laboratory has demonstrated that rats display a preference for directional responding over place navigation in a wide range of procedural variants of the Morris water task. A preference for place navigation has only been observed when the pool is reduced as a cue by filling it with water. Studies using dry-land mazes suggest that rats place navigate early in training and later switch to other forms of responding (e.g., motor). The present study evaluated whether rats switch from place navigation to directional responding in the “full pool” variant of the water task. Rats were given 12, 24, or 36 hidden platform training trials. Probe trials with the pool repositioned in the room revealed a preference for place navigation in rats given 12 trials, an equal division of response preferences in rats given 24 trials, and a preference for directional responding in rats given 36 trials. These results indicate that the early preference for place navigation in the full pool water task is transient and yields to a preference for directional responding with continued training

Control of rodent and human spatial navigation by room and apparatus cues
No full textA growing body of literature indicates that rats prefer to navigate in the direction of a goal in the environment (directional responding) rather than to the precise location of the goal (place navigation). This paper provides a brief review of this literature with an emphasis on recent findings in the Morris water task. Four experiments designed to extend this work to humans in a computerized, virtual Morris water task are also described. Special emphasis is devoted to how directional responding and place navigation are influenced by room and apparatus cues, and how these cues control distinct components of navigation to a goal.Experiments 1 and 2 demonstrate that humans, like rats, perform directional responses when cues from the apparatus are present, while Experiment 3 demonstrates that place navigation predominates when apparatus cues are eliminated. In Experiment 4, an eyetracking system measured gaze location in the virtual environment dynamically as participants navigated from a start point to the goal.Participants primarily looked at room cues during the early segment of each trial, but primarily focused on the apparatus as the trial progressed, suggesting distinct, sequential stimulus functions. Implications for computational modeling of navigation in the Morris water task and related tasks are discussed

No full textIl contributo – redatto per il catalogo dell’esposizione dedicata alle realizzazioni conclusive della vita di Robert Morris, che si è tenuta alla Galleria Nazionale d’Arte Moderna e Contemporanea di Roma a un anno di distanza dalla morte dello scultore (15 ottobre 2019 al 3 marzo 2020) – indaga la dimensione “velo” all’interno delle due installazioni che l’artista americano ha realizzato nel 2015 e nel 2018. Le numerose sculture che compongono le due installazioni sono impronte, ottenute disponendo su manichini opportunamente modellati tela di lino e fibra di carbonio, che la resina epossidica “solidifica” facendole diventare “veli” autoportanti una volta che il manichino viene tolto. Lo studio, inoltre, focalizza l’attenzione sulla forte dimensione passionale che queste sculture-veli sono in grado di veicolare e sulla loro capacità di creare una costellazione con esempi cardine della storia dell’arte del passato, come ad esempio con le statue di piangenti in alabastro che formavano il corteo funebre disposto intorno alla tomba di Filippo l’Ardito, duca di Borgogna, realizzate da Claus Sluter nel primo quarto del Quattrocento
Visualizing the dynamics of soil aggregation as affected by arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi
No full textStable soils provide valuable ecosystem services and mechanical soil stability is enhanced by the presence of arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF). Soil aggregation, which is the major driver of mechanical soil stability, is often treated as a static phenomenon, even though aggregate turnover is continually ongoing. In fact, some breakdown of macroaggregates is
necessary to allow new aggregate formation and inclusion of new organic matter into microaggregates. We determined how aggregate turnover times were affected by AMF by tracking movement of rare earth elements (REE), applied as their immobile oxides, between aggregate size classes, and using X-ray fluorescence microscopy to spatially localize REEs in a sample of aggregates. Here we show that AMF increased large macroaggregate formation and slowed down disintegration of large and small macroaggregates. Microaggregate turnover was increased in the presence of AMF. Internal aggregate organization suggested that although formation of microaggregates by accretion of soil to particulate organic matter is common, it is not the only mechanism in operation

No full textTese (doutorado) - Universidade Federal de Santa Catarina, Centro de Comunicação e Expressão, Programa de Pós-Graduação em Estudos da Tradução, Florianópolis, 2015.Este tese examina a relação entre tradução e edição, dois ofícios mediadores entre um texto e seu leitor cuja ação se confunde e complementa na transmissão das ideias e das obras. Duas linguagens que, a partir de escolhas verbais ou verbo-visuais, dão nova forma a um texto conferindo-lhe novos significados. Duas formas privilegiadas de reescrita que, entre traição e criação, mantêm vivo um texto original ao atualizá-lo em diferentes línguas, tempos e espaços. Num primeiro momento, é observado o modo como se realizam tradução e edição em diferentes períodos da história do livro, e em que medida, ao refletirem valores e ideologias da cultura em que se inscrevem, espelham o modo como se manifesta, nessa cultura, a relação com o Outro, o estrangeiro. Num segundo momento, é enfocada a obra do artista e poeta William Morris (1834-1896). Tradutor, Morris se destacou por introduzir a literatura nórdica na Inglaterra oitocentista. Editor, produziu com arte, em sua Kelmscott Press, livros que marcaram a história do moderno design editorial. Examina-se aqui, mais detidamente, como se integram tradução e edição num projeto seu de quase vida inteira, a translação das sagas islandesas. E como se integra a translação das sagas com a sua longa busca do livro ideal.Abstract : This thesis examines the relationship between translation and publishing, two professions that mediate between texts and their readers in the transmission of ideas and works through activities that are interrelated, interdependent and often indistinguishable. Two languages that give new form to a text, endowing it with new meanings through verbal or verbal-visual choices. Two privileged forms of rewriting that inhabit the space between betrayal and creation, rejuvenating original texts by bringing them up to date in different languages, times and places. The thesis begins by observing the different modes of translation and publishing that have prevailed during different periods in the history of books and discussing the extent to which these different modes, which reflect the values and ideologies of their host cultures, mirror the way that the relationship with the Other, the foreign, is manifest in these cultures. The thesis then narrows its focus to the work of the artist and poet William Morris (1834-1896). As a Translator, Morris? most significant achievement was to introduce Nordic literature to nineteenth-century England. As an Editor, the pioneering combination of art with publication that he carried on at the Kelmscott Press resulted in productions that have shaped modern book design. This analysis examines in detail the way that Morris integrated translation and publishing in his near-lifelong project to translate the Icelandic sagas and the way that he integrated translation of these sagas into his painstaking quest for the ideal book
