Semantic, Executive, and Visuospatial Abilities in Mathematical Reasoning of Referred College Students

    No full text
Semantic retrieval (SR) and executive-procedural (EP), but not visuospatial (VS) skills, have been found to be uniquely predictive of mathematical calculation skills in a sample of clinically referred college students. This study set out to cross-validate these results in an independent sample of clinically referred college students (N = 337) as well as extend them by examination of the contributions of these cognitive domains to math reasoning skills. Results indicate that these cognitive domains were able to predict 30% of the vari- ance in calculation skills and 50% of the variance in math reasoning; however, in both cases, only the domains of semantic retrieval and visuospatial skill contributed uniquely. Differences between studies, and the lack of unique contribution of the EP domain to either type of math skill, may be due to measurement and sampling differences, the degree of shared relations among domains, and the choice of measures that represent the EP domain. Implications and future directions are explored.Originally published in: Cirino, P., Morris, M. & Morris, R. (2007). Ouch That Hurt! A Visual EP and Documentary

    No full text
This culminating experience project consisted of a visual and collaborative Extended Play (referred to as “EP” henceforth) and a documentary of the process of creating a visual EP in its entirety. The most important part of the author’s culminating experience was a finished EP of three original songs. The author created visuals for each song, using a variety of different sources learned during her time at Berklee. The EP featured all original music written by the author and was a collaboration between instrumentalists, recording engineers, mixing and mastering engineers from Berklee. Additionally, each song featured a different analog or digital emulation synthesizer in order to expand the author\u27s knowledge of music technology and of music history in the synth pop genre. The author chose to do an EP for her culminating experience project in order to expand her personal artistry, continue working on her songwriting, production and engineering, learn about new synthesizers, and to capture the entire process in an educational documentary in order to show how an EP is created from start to finish.https://remix.berklee.edu/graduate-studies-production-technology/1270/thumbnail.jp

Inter rater reliability of recovery capital: Assessment of a clinician rated measure

    No full text
This study investigated the inter rater reliability for the Clinician Recovery Capital Measure as a tool to assess recovery capital for clients with alcohol and other drug problems. The sample consisted of 15 women (M = 40.07 years, SD = 10.79 years) and 6 men (M = 47.83 years, SD = 13.57 years), who had at least a three year degree or equivalent in a relevant field plus professional/practical experience with mental health clients. Assessment of inter rater reliability required participants to code standardised case notes using the Clinician Recovery Capital Measure. Data were analysed for total recovery capital as well as the subcategories of social, human, cultural and physical capital. Use of the Intra Class Correlation Coefficient (ICC) demonstrated excellent levels of inter rater reliability for total recovery capital ICC = 0.909, social capital ICC = 0.884, human capital ICC = 0.775, cultural capital ICC = 0.857, and physical capital ICC = 0.975. These ICC results demonstrate that the Clinician Recovery Capital Measure can be reliably coded by a range of mental health practioners in an Australian clinical context. This study is an important step in the development of the clinician recovery capital measure and the process of operationalising recovery. Coordination polymers of ZnII and 5-methoxy isophthalate

This work was funded by the British Heart Foundation (NH/11/8/29253) and the EPSRC (EP/K005499/1).Solvothermal reaction of Zn(OAc)2 and 5-methoxy isophthalic acid (H2MeOip) in aqueous alcohols ROH (R = H, Me, Et, or iPr) affords four different novel coordination polymers. Zn2(HMeOip)(MeOip)(OAc) (1) forms as a 1D 'ribbon of rings' polymer. Zn6(MeOip)4.5(HMeOip)(OH)2(H2O)2·5.5H2O (2) crystallises as a complex 3D framework. Zn(MeOip)(H2O)2 H2O (3) is a 1D coordination polymer that contains almost planar strips of Zn(MeOip). compound 4, Zn5(MeOip)4(OH)2(H2O)4·H2O, obtained from aqueous iPrOH, crystallises as a 2D polymer containing two crystallographically distinct Zn5(OH)2 clusters. Preliminary nitric oxide release experiments have been conducted.Peer reviewe

W. Z. thanks the EPSRC for financial support to the Electron Microscopy Laboratory at St Andrews (No. EP/F019580/1).A flower-like Au microstructure with a dominantly exposed active (110) plane has been prepared by a simple, facile method at room temperature. Various experimental factors that can control the shape of the Au microflowers have been investigated and optimized. Furthermore, the glassy carbon electrode modified with these Au microflowers exhibits high electrochemical activity towards H2O2 reduction. The sensor shows a linear range from 10 μM to 5.53 mM with a detection limit of 2 μM, which can be attributed to the exposed (110) planes and 3D hierarchical structure of the Au microflowers.Peer reviewe

    EP - Kyan Palmer

    No full text
abstract: "EP \u2014 Kyan Palmer" is a compilation of three songs, "Hit List," "Queen Cobra," and "Burn Mona Lisa" all written and recorded by Barrett student, Kyan Palmer. The project explores the process involved in creating recorded music and exposes the vulnerability and self-reflection in writing a song. The following depicts the thought process that came about in the creation of each song from the lyrics, to the vocals, to the production. This paper depicts a journal-like writing style outlining the various events that took place while creating EP \u2014 Kyan Palmer. The bulk of this Thesis/Creative Project was the written, produced, and recorded music attached in the appendix. With that said, the following document is intended to be reflective rather than scholarly and acts as an accompaniment to the audio recordings and video entries

Hammock, An EP and Visuals about Ego and Success

    No full text
This project seeks to produce a musical universe in the form of an Extended Play (EP) with seven songs and accompanying visuals. The EP is a concept album that is centered on themes of ego and success. This album blends rock, electronic, hip-hop, and storytelling. This project was recorded and mixed in the Berklee Valencia studios. First, a template was made for each part of the story and visual themes, and then the songs were recorded instrument by instrument. All the sounds, visuals, samples and music are original creations by the author of the project Michael Dodson. The author learned how to design sounds and visuals to represent thematic elements in the music. In the future, he will create a live show based around the EP. The show will feature live composing and live visuals.https://remix.berklee.edu/graduate-studies-production-technology/1294/thumbnail.jp

Myosin and Actin Filaments in Muscle: Structures and Interactions

    No full text
In the last decade, improvements in electron microscopy and image processing have permitted significantly higher resolutions to be achieved (sometimes <1 nm) when studying isolated actin and myosin filaments. In the case of actin filaments the changing structure when troponin binds calcium ions can be followed using electron microscopy and single particle analysis to reveal what happens on each of the seven non-equivalent pseudo-repeats of the tropomyosin α-helical coiled-coil. In the case of the known family of myosin filaments not only are the myosin head arrangements under relaxing conditions being defined, but the latest analysis, also using single particle methods, is starting to reveal the way that the α-helical coiled-coil myosin rods are packed to give the filament backbones
