Lead knee extension contributes to drag-flick performance in field hockey
No full textUnderstanding the biomechanics of the drag-flick is important for refining the performance of this task in field hockey. The aim of this study was to determine whether the maximal knee angle and maximal angular velocity of the lead knee extension are associated with ball speed in elite drag-flick players. The kinematics of the drag flick was studied in 19 elite field-hockey players who performed 15 drag-flick shots each towards a target located 1.30 m high at optimal speed. A motion capture suit was used to capture full body drag-flick behaviour sampling at 240 Hz. Multiple regression analyses were used to study the association between both the maximal knee flexion angle and maximal angular velocity of the leading knee extension and ball speed. Significant positive associations were found between knee extension velocity and ball speed (R2 =.127, p <.001). A higher knee extension velocity resulted in higher ball speeds within the individual, without negatively affecting the accuracy. It is advised to train, within an elite drag-flick group, for higher knee extension speed to improve the drag-flick performance. No full textDer Sozialforscher Uwe FLICK gibt in seinem Buch mehr einen Ein- als einen Überblick zu den historischen und theoretischen Hintergründen, methodischen Potenzialen und Problemen der Triangulation. Seine komprimierte Abhandlung lebt von Verweisen auf Norman DENZIN als den Begründer der Triangulation im Bereich qualitativer Forschung, und von vielen beispielhaften Veranschaulichungen aus der Forschungspraxis. Insgesamt zeigt der Autor, der seit vielen Jahren ein Verfechter von qualitativen Mehrmethodenansätzen ist, eher die vielfältigen Möglichkeiten und weniger die Grenzen der Triangulation auf. Forschungsanfängern wird kaum eine Handlungsanleitung gegeben, weshalb das Buch auch nicht für Studierende zu empfehlen ist. Dafür mangelt es zu sehr an einer Leitfadenstruktur und einer verständlichen Sprache. Es ist eher als Versuch zu betrachten, etwas Licht in den Dschungel des bislang ungenauen Verständnisses von Triangulation zu bringen.In this book, Uwe FLICK provides an insight into, rather than a survey of, the historical and theoretical background, methodical potential and problems of triangulation. Of particular interest in his condensed treatise are the references to the founder of triangulation, Norman DENZIN, as well as the many exemplary illustrations of research in practice. It should be rather seen as an attempt to bring a little light into the jungle of the imprecise way triangulation has been understood.En este libro, Uwe FLICK proporciona una visión comprensiva, más que un sondeo, del bagaje histórico y teórico, del potencial metodológico y de los problemas de la triangulación. De particular interés en su tratado condensado, son las referencias al fundador de la triangulación, Norman DENZIN, así como los muchos ejemplos ilustrativos de la investigación en la práctica. Book Review Symposium: Between Reflexivity and Consolidation—Qualitative Research in the Mirror of Handbooks
No full textThe increasing number of textbooks and handbooks on qualitative research reflects developments in qualitative research as a field. In this book review symposium—based on a "Meet the Author" Session at the European Sociological Association Conference in Glasgow in 2007—several recent examples of handbooks written or edited by Uwe FLICK are discussed by two commentators. The author of the books then adds his own comments and responses. The discussion covers four main issues. First, tensions between intensifying the reflexivity of qualitative research and consolidating it as a competitor on the market of research, research training and funding are discussed. A second issue is how handbooks contribute to bridging the gaps between different local or language-specific traditions of qualitative research. A third issue is how to integrate more strongly the idea of research design into the methodological discussion (and practice) of qualitative research more strongly. A fourth issue is how to promote and assess the quality of qualitative research and overcome a "legitimation crisis". These issues are discussed by the authors of this book review symposium from different perspectives with a focus on teaching qualitative methodology and on the progress of qualitative research.El creciente número de libros de texto y manuales sobre investigación cualitativa refleja desarrollos en esta investigación en tanto campo. En este simposio de reseñas, basado en la sesión "Conozca al autor" de la Conferencia de Glasgow en 2007 de la Asociación Europea de Sociología, dos comentaristas discutieron varios ejemplos recientes de manuales escritos o editados por Uwe FLICK. El autor de los libros brindó respuestas e hizo comentarios. La discusión abarca cuatros temas principales. Primero, se discuten las tensiones entre intensificar la reflexividad de la investigación cualitativa y consolidarla como un competidor en el mercado de la investigación, la capacitación para la investigación y el financiamiento. Un segundo tema es como los manuales ayudan a superar los huecos entre diferentes tradiciones locales o con lenguajes específicos de la investigación cualitativa. Pathways of Helium Postconditioning induced Cardioprotection
No full textShort cycles of ventilation with anesthetic gases prior to or after prolonged cardiac ischemia, called anesthetic pre- or postconditioning, are known to reduce cardiac damage. The underlying mechanisms include the reperfusion injury salvage (RISK) pathway and involve recruitment of molecular signaling via caveolin (Cav) modulation. Postconditioning with helium (HePoc) mimics cardioprotective effects. In the present study using a rat model, we investigated whether (1) HePoc alters protein or mRNA expression of Cav-1 and -3 and (2) activation of RISK pathway and (3) autophagy associated proteins. Heliox ventilation (70% He, 30% O2) was applied after 25 min of ischemia and tissue from ischemic area at risk (AAR), non-ischemic not area at risk (NAAR), and serum was obtained. Cell fractions of Sham, I/R, I/R+He treated animals were separated and investigated for changes of Cav-1 and Cav-3 protein levels and mRNA expression. Phosphorylation levels were measured to determine RISK pathway activation (Erk1/2, PI3K, PKCε and Akt). Protein levels of autophagy proteins Bcl-1 and sequestosome-1 were also measured. HePoc lead to an increase of Cav-1 mRNA expression compared to I/R only and additionally elevated levels of Cav-1 (P<0.01) and Cav-3 (P<0.05) in the membrane fraction of ischemic myocardium (AAR). RISK pathway kinase Akt was activated more in AAR and NAAR tissue of the HePoc group (both P<0.05). Erk1/2 phosphorylation was higher in AAR (P<0.05) after HePoc. However in NAAR tissue of I/R and HePoc treated animals, pErk1/2 was lower compared to Sham (both P<0.001). PKCε and PI3K showed no significant changes in phosphorylation. Bcl-1 was significantly elevated in the mitochondrial fraction after HePoc in AAR (P<0.05) as well as NAAR (P<0.05), while sequestosome-1 levels showed no difference between groups. We propose that HePoc induces cardioprotection through a network of signalling. Respective mediators may include caveolins, the RISK pathway and autophagic processes
