Online Smear Campaign
In 2008, the biggest example of online smear campaign was the viral attacks spread on the Internet which claimed that Barack Obama was Muslim. The seriousness of this accusation needs to be evaluated in the context and the political culture of the United States. On the one hand, the memory of the terroristic attacks by Islamic extremists on 11 September 2011 is still vivid and induces in many citizens the controversial equation between Islam and terrorism. On the other hand, historically, a candidate of any religious faith different from Christianity is perceived as uncommon and suspicious by part of the electorate (Kohut et al., 2000).
The religious slander is an attack to the patriotism of the candidate and to his sharing of the values that keep the political community together and that the President, as a symbol of national unity, should embody. Furthermore, claiming that a politician practices a different religion than the one he/she publicly declares implies the even more dangerous insinuation that the candidate has deceived voters by hiding a central aspect of his/her personal life and identity
Forms of Political Transnationalism. The External Voting of the Italians in Sydney
This book reports research on the political behaviour of
Italians living in Sydney. The aim is to verify the substance of the
widespread criticism brought against the political representation
of external voters: namely that the right to vote is granted to
uninformed and uninterested people who usually abstain.
By using qualitative methods and according to social attributes
such as the different generations of migrants and their level of
education, we address the following research questions: How
do Italians in Sydney participate in Italian politics? What role is
played by the ‘Italian’ networks active in Sydney? What factors
affect the political transnationalism of Italians in Australia? The
results will show significant differences among the various groups
of emigrants in terms of both their interest in Italian politics and
their opinion of the law regulating their right to vote from abroad
Uno Studio sulle Presidenziali Americane: L’Economia Conta?
L’economia conta. This is one of the dogmas taught us by those who have studied the history of the American presidential elections. But is this collective perception of the influence of economic data on individual electoral behaviour confirmed by statistical analysis of the history of presidential elections? This study shows that the most commonly used economic indicators are poor predictors of election outcomes, and also that variation in the approval rating of the incumbent president is a variable independent from the real economic data

Gli Spot Elettorali nelle Campagne Presidenziali Americane: Forme, Immagini, Strategie.
Since Eisenhower to Obama, political commercials are one of the main features of the American Presidential campaigns. Nowadays, in a media-saturated environment in which news, opinions, and entertainment surround us all day on our television sets, computers, and cell phones, the television commercial remains the one area where presidential candidates have complete control over their images. Television commercials use all the tools of fiction filmmaking, including script, visuals, editing, and performance, to distill a candidate's major campaign themes into a few powerful images. Ads elicit emotional reactions, inspiring support for a candidate or raising doubts about his opponent. While commercials reflect the styles and techniques of the times in which they were made, the fundamental strategies and messages have tended to remain the same over the years. Since Eisenhower to Obama, political commercials are one of the main features of the American Presidential campaigns.
