The Power of Smears in Two American Presidential Elections
This article compares the two main cases of deceitful negative campaigning that characterized the American Presidential campaigns of 2004 and 2008. These are, respectively, the attacks led by the Swift Boat Veterans for Truth against the military career and the subsequent pacifist turn of John Kerry; and the smear, initially spread around the Web, that claimed that Barack Obama was Muslim. This research describes the origins, developments, and outcomes of the two smear campaigns, focusing on the differences and similarities between them in terms of their content and their communication strategies. It then investigates the role played by the different media platforms, the importance of a prompt answer by the recipients of the accusations, and the response of public opinion. Finally, the comparison of the cases allows pointing out some conditions for the success or failure of mudslinging in contemporary American political communication. This article compares the two main cases of deceitful negative campaigning that characterized the American Presidential campaigns of 2004 and 2008.
Improving the Quality of the Input in the Term Structure Consistent Models
In finance, getting an accurate estimation of the term structure of interest rates is essential because this information is often used as input by other pricing financial models. In this paper, we point out the importance of selecting a suitable estimation of the term structure of interest rates. To show this fact, we use the Spanish Bond Market to estimate the initial interest rate and forward curves for one day, by using both McCulloch (1975) cubic polynomial splines, and Legendre's polynomials (Morini, 1998). We use these curves as input for pricing pure discount bonds with the Ho and Lee (1986) and Hull and White (1990) models. Then, we find the important result that using an inadequate interest rate curve affects dramatically the behaviour of the dynamic term structure models and, consequently, the estimation of the asset pricing modelsTerm structure of interest rates, dynamic consistent models
Reader-educators: exploratory research on the profile of future educators in their initial training period
During the initial training period of future educators, it is essential to strengthen their identity as readers. In the professional context in which they will be working, namely Early Childhood Educational Services, it is indeed important that they can promote the development of the pleasure of reading in children. Research highlights that it is not enough for educators to know the best strategies for designing activities that foster familiarity with books; it is equally important that they themselves are motivated and engaged readers (Applegate & Applegate, 2004; Cremin et al., 2022). In this regard, the quality and specificity of educators’ training are critical, both in terms of knowledge of educational practices related to reading and awareness of their own personal reading profile (Chambers & Zucchini, 2011; Cremin, 2014, 2020; Moretti, 2017; Morini, 2017; Batini & Giusti, 2021). In addition to the affective-emotional dimension of reading, attention must also be paid to the cognitive dimension. The paper presents the main outcomes of an exploratory research involving students enrolled in the degree program “Educator for Early Childhood and Nursery Services” at the Department of Education, Roma Tre University. In the first phase of the study, a diachronic analysis was conducted to identify the initial gaps manifested by the future educators. The analysis revealed that students often struggle with the ability to read and deeply comprehend texts. The main objective was therefore to gather information on young adult readers’ profiles and their opinions on the importance of introducing an integrated reading education model starting from early childhood. Two tools were used for data collection: the Literary Response Questionnaire (LRQ) by Miall & Kuiken (1995), translated and adapted to the Italian context for young adults (Moretti & Morini, 2024); and a questionnaire specifically designed for this study to collect both qualitative and quantitative data. The data confirm the trend observed in national Italian statistics, which show a significant number of weak readers (people who report to have read between 1 and 3 books in the past 12 months). The phenomenon of disengagement from reading seems to begin at the end of secondary school. Furthermore, the main findings of the research confirm the need to introduce activities in initial training programs that encourage critical reflection on personal reading habits to counteract the decline in reading practices

The transformations of the processes of valorisation that have innervated the passage from Fordist-Taylorist to bio-cognitive capitalism have also highlighted the transformations of the welfare system. In this essay, we intend to analyse the process according to which welfare institutions have been transformed into productive factors, capable of influencing the mechanism of capitalist valorisation. Starting from what emerged in the field survey conducted in three pilot countries (Italy, Holland, Croatia) from the Horizon 2020 research "Pie News", we can observe that there are attempts to bottom-up experiments within the social body, thanks to which it is possible to resist the growing uncertainty and economic insecurity generated by the new models of neo-liberal governance (Butler, 2015, Leroy, 2015). From this point of view, the theme of the centrality of social reproduction and care expropriated by contemporary production paradigms is addressed. Far from being a simple cost, the reproduction and enhancement of the living being is becoming, thanks also to the development of private forms of health and social insurance, more and more directly or indirectly productive. In this context, the final paragraph is dedicated to the presentation of the Commonfare proposal (Welfare of the Common), originating from the analysis of good welfare practices from below
