The key performance of commercial banks : evidence from Republic of Kosovo

    Get PDF
Purpose: The purpose of this study is to analyze the factors that influence the main performance of commercial banks in the Republic of Kosovo. In order to assess the main performance of commercial banks, the authors used side data processed from financial reports of commercial banks as the main segment of Kosovo financial sector over a decade (2008-2018). Design/methodology/approach: Data processing for financial reports included in the econometric analysis is done using the STATA software program, specifically using linear regression, fixed effect, random effect, Hausman Taylor Regression and GMM Model. Assuming that the profitability of a commercial bank is a key factor in measuring its financial performance, then internal factors that have an impact on financial performance are taken as econometric variables. The return on assets (ROA) has been taken as a subordinated variable, while the independent variables are: bank capital adequacy, bank liquidity rate, and operational efficiency of the bank. Findings: The results show that the profitability of commercial banks in Kosovo has a positive impact on capital adequacy and liquidity of commercial banks, while the commercial banks' operational efficiency has a negative impact. Practical implications: The article offers insights to commercial banks who should intensify their efforts to increase efficiency in rational management with operational and administrative costs, as well as, adapt the business model to market needs. Originality/value: The article presents significant pragmatic evidence in terms of its meticulous approach towards checking the robustness of results.peer-reviewe

In this study, the authors aim to analyze the impact of pension asset investments on the economic growth of selected non-OECD countries, taking into account the controlling effect of gross fixed capital formation, domestic credit to the private sector, inflation, public debt and population. To conduct the econometric analysis in this study, the authors relied on secondary data published in the annual reports of the OECD, the World Bank and the IMF. Based on the econometric results of this study, the authors conclude that the investment of pension fund assets has positively impacted the economic growth of selected non-OECD countries (2002–2018). This study is of scientific importance because it provides detailed empirical evidence regarding the investment of pension funds in international financial markets and the effects of these investments on the economic growth of non-OECD countries. Moreover, the authors of this study through this scientific paper provide new scientific evidence to governments and policymakers in these countries on how to design appropriate strategic investment policies so that pension funds invest their pension assets at a safe rate of return from investments to ensure economic growth and efficiency in the capital markets. Given that most non-OECD countries are emerging and transition economies, the importance of this study lies in the fact that the authors, through empirical findings, highlight the importance of pension fund investments in global financial markets and the effects of these investments on the economic growth of these countries.peer-reviewe

The impact of macroeconomic factors on the level of deposits in the banking sector, an empirical analysis in the Western Balkan countries

    Get PDF
Purpose: The principal objective of this study is to analyse the impact of macroeconomic factors on the level of deposits in the banking sector in Western Balkan countries. Design/methodology/approach: The impact of macroeconomic factors on the levels of deposits in the countries mentioned will be analyzed through econometric models. With reference to the applied models, the dependent variable will be the level of deposits, whilst the independent variables will be the interest rate on deposits, marginal rates, GDP, inflation and broad money. In order to achieve the research target set, the research will be based on secondary data which will be analyzed through the STATA program. Findings: The interest rate plays a key role in banking systems because it determines the benefits of the difference between the interest rate on loans and the interest rate on deposits. However, exposure to risk is often present because banks provide long-term loans financed by short-term deposits, and this involves the socalled interest rate risk. Practical Implications: One of the most important channels of monetary policy transmission in an economy is interest rates. Macroeconomic factors and the financial sector structure in the economy of a country have a significant impact on determining the interest rate elevation. Originality/Value: The analyzed period (2005-2017) is a compelling period for competent conclusions.peer-reviewe

The effect of public debt on private consumption : the case of countries in transition

    Get PDF
Developed countries have well-designed and developed economies in macroeconomic terms. However, not all countries benefit from the fruits of such an economy. Therefore, some countries are still faced with an economy that requires macroeconomic restructuring and development. People in these countries face high unemployment, evolving fiscal and monetary policies. The state is forced to borrow either internally or externally, where the latter is usually preferred. This paper aims to show the effects of government debt on private consumption with a particular focus on transition countries. Thereby explaining the factors that influence private consumption and the types of debt that governments take into account. The countries in regions, which are facing this problem, will be analysed in more detail. Kosovo is one such country, which will be analysed in detail, particularly the relationship between national debt and private consumption. This study is carried out using the statistical software STATA, whereby private consumption is a dependent variable, whilst national debt, gross fixed capital formation, foreign direct investment, consumer price index, export of goods and services and GDP growth are our independent variables. This paper is a compilation of information from multiple sources to describe the reality that transition countries are faced with when borrowing.peer-reviewe

The role of strategic financial management in driving sustainable growth in a green economy

    No full text
Strategic financial management is critical in promoting sustainable economic growth and developing a green economy by integrating best financial practices with sustainable development objectives. This study analyzes the impact of strategic financial management on sustainable economic development through three case studies: Greencells in Germany, a leading and highly successful company in solar energy; the ECOPROFIT program in Slovenia, a project that aims to effectively manage the process of reducing costs and waste in enterprises, and Ujë Rugove, a Kosovar company that has received green financing to advance its production process. Through content analysis, comparative analysis, and secondary data analysis, the study examines how the financial strategies of these companies and their green projects have contributed to sustainable growth. The empirical results highlight that strategic financing and effective management of financial resources positively impact improving competitiveness and promoting environmental innovation and sustainable development projects. This study provides recommendations for all businesses, governments, and other stakeholders on effectively integrating strategic financial management into green economy projects

Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

    Get PDF
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed

    Variations on the Author

“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship

Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis

We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Finally, we show by means of an example that our findings have a high practical relevance.information science;Pearson correlation;cosine;similarity measure;author cocitation analysis

Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts

    Get PDF
We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. It is argued that increasingly available digital full text research papers make it possible for citation analysis studies to go beyond what the ISI databases have directly supported and to employ more sophisticated methods
