DETECTION OF STATOR INTER-TURNS FAULT USING DISCRETE WAVELETS TRANSFORM
the goal of this article is to describe detecting stator faults in induction machines in the presence of stator inter-turn short circuit, both of which are effective solutions for the diagnosis of defects. They are based on the signature analysis of the stator current performed by the fast Fourier transform (FFT) in the stationary regime and the analysis performed by the discrete wavelet transform (DWT) in the no stationary regime. The proposed technique compares the current in healthy and faulty condition to produce accurate results. The proposed technique uses discrete Fourier transform for signal processing and produces more accurate results as compared to traditional waveform analysis technique
Sustainable Development Goals in SAARC Countries: Key Issues, Opportunities and Challenges
Ladies and gentlemen,
I am honored to be here today to speak to you about the issues, challenges, and opportunities for providing renewable energy towards the sustainable development goals in the SAARC counties, in particularly in Sri Lanka. I will also suggest some possible solutions for overcoming the key issues, challenges and opportunities for sustaining the energy sector of the SAARC countries. And also, it is a pleasure to address this important international conference in beautiful Mudhoji College, in Padmavati Nagar, Maharashtra, India.
As we know the SAARC, or the South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation, which is a regional organization that comprises, Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, the Maldives, Nepal, Pakistan, and Sri Lanka. These countries may have common historical, cultural, and Geographical linkages, as well as common challenges and opportunities for development.
The sustainable development goals (SDGs) are a set of 17 global goals that aim to end poverty, protect the world, and ensure peace and prosperity for all by 2030. They include several objectives which are related to energy access, energy efficiency, renewable energy, and actions against climate change.
The SDG goals of 7 stand for affordable and clean energy. It aims to ensure access to reliable, sustainable, and clean energy for all by 2030. Further, it emphasized increasing renewable energy, improving energy efficiency and expanding infrastructure and technology for clean energy. Achieving SDG 7 would be able to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, mitigate climate change and finally it helps to promote economic and social development of the World, in particularly, the SAARC countries.
According to the available data, more than 75% of the total energy production of India, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh and Afghanistan are come from fossil fuels, i.e., non-renewable energy. It is 100% in Maldives. In Pakistan, it is 63%. But in Bhutan and Nepal the non-renewable fossil fuel usage is much lower than 10% of their total energy production. They produce energy from renewable sources such as biomass, hydroelectricity and so on.
One of the most serious issues facing our South Asian region is the lack of access to affordable, and clean energy for millions of people. According to the World Bank, about 255 million people in South Asia still live without electricity, and many more people use biomass to fulfill their energy requirement, which causes indoor air pollution and health problems. In addition, it is estimated that the energy demand of the SAARC countries will increase by 3.4% annually due to population growth, urbanization, economic development and so on.
Renewable energy is a good opportunity for SAARC countries to achieve sustainable development goals. It can provide low cost and clean energy for all. It provides more employment opportunities, income generation, reduces poverty and inequality, improves health and well-being, as well as protecting the environment.
At present all SAARC countries face the provision of adequate and affordable energy for their growing demand of the populations and other economic activities. As we know, energy is essential for economic growth, social development, and environmental protection. However, SAARC countries face several key issues in meeting their energy needs, such as:
1. High dependence on fossil fuels, which are costly, and contribute to greenhouse gas emissions and local air pollution,
2. Low access to modern energy sources, especially in rural areas, where millions of people still depend on traditional systems,
3. Lack of infrastructure for generating, transmitting, and providing adequate power for the rural sector,
4. Lack of adequate investment for energy production,
5. Limited opportunities and cooperation in the energy sector, for generating and sharing with the SAARC nations.
Challenges are the situation that requires efforts, skills, and commitments to overcome. In the context of renewable energy, issues may be a topic of concern, such as the environmental impact under the different technology. Accordingly, several Challenges could be found in providing renewable energy for the SAARC countries, which are as follows.
How to reduce dependency on energy imports and enhance energy security?
How to produce environmentally friendly energy, which reduces greenhouse gas emissions and reduces air pollution?
How to reduce production cost for renewable energy which helps to reduce expenses for fossil fuels?
What is the possibility to provide clean energy for the people living in remote areas in SAARC countries?
What is the possibility to share surplus energy with the energy deficit countries?
As we knew that the SAARC countries face several constraints to transform from nonrenewable to renewable sector, such as in adequate infrastructure, investment, appropriate technology, suitable policy frameworks, and public awareness etc. Obviously, the SAARC countries need to shift towards a renewable energy source, such as hydropower, solar, wind, geothermal, wave, tidal and modern biofuels, which have more advantages over fossil fuels. Accordingly, there are many opportunities to overcome these challenges and achieve the sustainable development goals (SDGs). Some of the significant opportunities are as follows.
Adopting a policy framework for establishing Government, Public and private partnership programs,
Provide an incentive to promote renewable energy production and development in terms of tax exemption, subsidies, and tariffs,
Strengthening human resources and technical capacities to design, implement and operate renewable energy systems,
Invest more money in research and development activities to novel innovation and technology transfer in renewable energy,
Enhance regional cooperation to coordinate, facilitate and enforce regulations, as well as to facilitate trans-boundary energy trade and interconnection of renewable energy systems.
It would be interesting to have a look at our country. i.e. Sri Lanka. As you know that the Sri Lanka is a beautiful island with rich natural resources.
However, Sri Lanka is also facing many issues, such as increasing energy demand, high dependence on fossil fuels, unbearable energy cost and adverse environmental impacts. These issues have been adversely affecting the economic development of the country. As you may know, Sri Lanka is a developing country with a population of about 22 million people and a per capita income of about 4,000 US dollars. The country has achieved remarkable progress in human development indicators such as literacy and life expectancy. However, it also faces many challenges in achieving economic growth, social equity, and environmental sustainability against the present economic crises.
On this background, Sri Lankan has already identified the importance of renewable energy and has set a goal of achieving 70 percent electricity generation by renewable sources by 2030 under the SDG. An apex institution was set up to achieve this goal, i.e., Sustainable Energy Authority (SLSEA).
There are several specific issues could be identified in the SAARC countries related to sustainable energy. Some specific issues are as follows.
High upfront costs and lack of financing options due to economic constraint of the country,
Inadequate policy and regulatory frameworks

Complete dissertationCandida albicans is a pathogenic yeast responsible for causing infection in
patients under immunosuppressive therapy, and is responsible for recurrent
vulvovaginal candidiasis. Although, number of C. albicans derived intrinsic
factors and the host factors have been found responsible for virulence and
favouring the disease process, there is no antimycotic drug which proves out
to be completely fungicidal, suppressing recurrent infections. This work deals
with the study of Candida albicans-host cell interaction, to give an insight
of the disease process, which could lead to new therapeutic interventions.
Earlier studies on D. uninucleata revealed presence of a biologically active
3-HETE derived from exogenously fed Arachidonic acid. It was found, that it is
not only important for its own life cycle, but also shows biological activity
in human cells. We tried to find if a similar mechanism occurs in pathogenic
fungi. It was found that although C. albicans does not contain arachidonic
acid, it is able to grow on arachidonic acid as a sole carbon source as
efficiently as it can utilise linoleic acid. Metabolism of arachidonic acid by
C. albicans occurs both by mitochondrial dependent and independent pathways as
shown by inhibitor studies. Arachidonic acid was shown to block the
alternative oxidase pathway of energy generation in Candida albicans, and was
efficiently metabolised to other fatty acids, carbohydrates, and proteins.
Arachidonic acid metabolism by Candida albicans produced a novel compound
3,18-diHETE, which was closely related to previously discovered 3-HETE by Dr.
S. Nigam's group. It was also observed that 3,18-diHETE was mainly associated
with the cells bearing germ-tube and hyphael forms. This production was found
to be aspirin sensitive. We found that C. albicans grown in aspirin showed
diminished immunofluorescence with anti-3-OH-oxylipins antibody, indicating
decreased amounts of 3,18 diHETE. Apart from this, there was diminished germ-
tube formation, which is essential for infection, in C. albicans in presence
of aspirin. Aspirin suppressed not only cell growth, but it also reduced the
adhesion of C. albicans to the host cells. These observations prompted us to
explore a therapeutic role for aspirin. When given along with clotrimazole,
aspirin was found to reduce minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) of
clotrimazole against C. albicans. The action of aspirin was directed towards
inhibiting 3-hydroxylation mechanism in C. albicans and of clotrimazole
towards 18-hydroxylation mechanism and ergosterol synthesis, which occurs via
cytochrome p450. This demonstrates a novel approach to potentiate the action
of antimycotic drug clotrimazole. Moreover, aspirin is a cyclooxygenase-2
inhibitor, which inhibits formation of PGE2, and thus the infectivity of C.
albicans. Our results thus showed that aspirin may be a suitable drug for the
therapy of recurrent Candidiasis. It is known that host factors are also
responsible for the establishment of infection. HDL, which is lowered in
sepsis patients, and therefore substituted, was found to further increase
virulence by inducing germtube formation in C. albicans. The first step of
infection includes adhesion of pathogen to host cells. C. albicans which
adheres to host cells rapidly is found to be more virulent, and is able to
proceeds further to establish the infection process. Our results demonstrate
that aspirin is able to decrease the adhesion of C. albicans to HeLa cell,
thus decreasing its virulence. Upon infection with C. albicans signal
transduction pathways are triggered in host cells (HeLa cells). We found
upregulation of COX-2 in HeLa cells upon infection with C. albicans as well as
increase in PGE2 production. Not only C. albicans but also 3-HETE, upregulated
COX-2, showing that 3-HETE was important compound which mediated cell
signaling during infection. Using specific chemical inhibitors to various
signal transduction pathways, it was established that Protein Kinase C (PKC)
and p38 MAP kinase pathway were primarily involved in the COX-2 upregulation.
In other systems, involving cytokines and LPS, control of COX-2 transcription
involved ERK1/2 and JNK MAP kinase pathways. Further studies were performed to
evaluate the exact sequence of activation of kinases involved. GF 203190X (PKC
inhibitor) prevented the phosphorylation of p38 MAP kinase, while other
inhibitors failed to have any effect. Thus, PKC acts as an upstream factor
phosphorylating p38 MAP kinase. C. albicans induced p38 MAP kinase was also
observed to be involved in modulating cytoskeletol changes host cell. This
effect involved the activation, of phosphorylated HSP27, a factor involved in
the modulation of actin, which was abrogated by p38 MAP kinase inhibitor SB
202190.We find that inhibition of free radicals, NAC inhibits COX-2 and PGE2
upregulation suggesting involvement of reactive oxygen species and NFkB during
the infection of HeLa cells with C. albicans. The control of transcription
occur by the various transcription factors binding to the concerned gene
promoter. NFkB is one of the important transcription factors implicated in the
COX-2 transcription. The role of NFkB was studied using a NFkB-dependent
reporter plasmid and a dominant negative plasmid for IkB (prevents the release
of active NFkB). NFkB-dependent transcription was triggered upon infection
with C albicans. However, this could be only partially abrogated by the IkB
dominant negative plasmid, moreover PI3-kinase pathway is involved in COX-2
upregulation via NFkB pathway. Thus C. albicans brings about redundant
signalling for the upregulation and control of COX-2 transcription. Extensive
programmed cell death (apoptosis) was observed after 24 h in Hela cells
infected with C. albicans as shown by genomic DNA laddering and TUNEL assay.
After 6 h postinfection, upregulation of caspase-3 activity was observed.
Caspase-3 is an effector caspase which is involved in the cleavage of cellular
proteins during apoptosis. Further more, using DNA microarray technology, we
showed that C. albicans upregulated PI-3-kinase in HeLa cells. PI-3-kinase is
a prominent mediator of anti-apoptotic functions via AKT and p65 NFkB. Its
inhibition by wortmannin increased the caspase-3 activity in infected cells.
IkB dominant negative transfected cells showed no caspase-3 activity upon
infection. This result was surprising as p65 NFkB, whose release is prevented
by the dominant negative plasmid, is an anti-apoptotic molecule. This
paradoxical reaction was clarified by the observation of truncated forms of
p65 NFkB in C. albicans infected HeLa cells. Carboxy terminal truncation of
p65 NFkB by caspase-3 renders the molecule inactive thereby preventing its
anti-apoptotic function. The pro-apoptotic subunits of NFkB, p50 and c-REL,
however, were upregulated in C. albicans infected cells. Thus, the anti-
apoptotic pathway, from PI-3-kinase via AKT to p65 NFkB is rendered
ineffective by the cleavage of p65 NFkB by caspase-3.3(R)-Hydroxyoxylipine sind neue Oxygenierungsprodukte von Polyenfettsäuren,

Darüber hinaus konnte mittelsImmunfluoreszenzmikroskopie gezeigt werden, daß
die entsprechenden Arachidonsäure- und Linolsäuremetaboliten auch in
denhumanpathogenen Pilzen, wie Candida albicans vorkommen. In C. albicans
wurden 3-Hydroxyoxylipine in den filamentären Strukturformen undKeimschläuchen
identifiziert, nicht aber in freien Blastosporen. Vorbehandlung der
Pilzkulturen mit Aspirin ließ die 3-Hydroxyoxylipineweitgehend verschwinden.
Aspirin bewirkte ebenfalls eine starke Hemmung des Pilzwachstum und zugleich
eine Verringerung des Anteilsfilamentärer Strukturelemente. In der
vorliegenden Arbeit sind Untersuchungen zur Struktur, Biosynthese und
biologischen Funktionen der 3(R)-Hydroxyoxylipine auf 3 verschiedenen Ebenen
durchgeführt: auf der Ebene des Pilzstoffwechsels, auf der Ebene der Pathogen-
Wirtszell-Interaktion sowie auf der Ebene biologischer Wirkung von C. albicans
auf intrazelluläre Signalkette. Desweiteren wurden biologische Wirkungen der
bereits von uns isolierten undidentifizierten 3-Hydroxyoxylipinen durch die
Transformation von Arachidonsäure auf mammaliäre Zellen und die Funktion
dieser Oxylipine für die Morphogenese und Pathogenität von Candida im Hinblick
auf ihre mögliche Rolle beim Infektionsprozess untersucht. Da Aspirin sowohl
über die Hemmung der Cyclooxygenase in den Wirtszellen als auch der
3-Hydroxyoxylipine beim Pathogen in die Pathogen-Wirtszell-Interaktion
eingreift,verspricht die Aspirintherapie auch Erfolg bei der Behandlung
resistenter Candida-Stämme.Hinsichtlich der Ergebnisse dieser Untersuchungen
sind einige Neuheiten hervorzuheben: (i) C. albicans kann allein auf
Arachidonsäure als Substrat gedeihen. Dabei werden primär über "Glyoxalat-
Shunt" Kohlenhydrate produziert. Dieser Mechanismus deutet auf die erhöhte
Virulenz beteiligter Gene hin. (ii) die Produktion von einem neuartigem,
dioxygeniertem Eikosanoid 3,18-DiHETE wurde für die Bildung von "germ-tube"
und Hyphen verantwortlich gemacht. (iii) Clomatrizol, das meist- benutzte
Mittel gegen vulvovaginale Kandidose, zusammen mit Aspirin wurde als das
wirkungsvollste Mittel gegen Kandidose nachgewiesen. (iv) C. albicans hat
selektiv COX-2 in HeLa Zellen hochreguliert. Diese Hochregulierung wurde mit
der erhöhten Synthese von Prostaglandin E2 begleitet. Prostaglandin E2 wird
u.a. für die morphogenetische Veränderung in C. albicans verantwortlich
gemacht, und somit für die Infektivität. (v) Die Hochregulierung von COX-2
erfolgt über verschiedene Signaltransduktionswege, wieTyrosinkinase,
Proteinkinase C, p38MAP Kinase oder via NFkappaB. NFkappaB und p38MAPK spielen
dabei Schlüsselrollen. Dagegen sind andere Stresskinasen, wie ERK1/2, JNK,
SAPK offensichtlich nicht beteiligt. (vi) C. albicans triggert auch Apoptose
via NFkappaB und/oderPI-3-Kinase in HeLa Zellen. Dabei wechselt NFkappaB ihre
anti-apoptotische Wirkung während der Reaktion in eine proapototische Wirkung.
Aus den Ergebnissen dieser Arbeit werden neue Aspekte der Regulation des
Wachstums und der Morphogenese von 3-hydroxyoxylipin-produzierenden Pilzen
sowie neue Ansatzpunkte zur Behandlung von Pilzerkrankungen bei Menschen und
Nutzpflanzen erwartet

New Algorithmic Support for the Fundamental Theorem of Algebra
Univariate polynomial root-finding is a venerated subjects of Mathematics and Computational Mathematics studied for four millenia. In 1924 Herman Weyl published a seminal root-finder and called it an algorithmic proof of the Fundamental Theorem of Algebra. Steve Smale in 1981 and Arnold Schonhage in 1982 proposed to classify such algorithmic proofs in terms of their computational complexity. This prompted extensive research in 1980s and 1990s, culminated in a divide-and-conquer polynomial root-finder by Victor Pan at ACM STOC 1995, which used a near optimal number of bit-operations. The algorithm approximates all roots of a polynomial p almost as fast as one accesses its coefficients with a precision required for the solution within a prescribed error bound. It seemed that there was no room left for any further major progress in the area, but a new research direction was inspired by Anand Louis and Santosh S. Vempala at IEEE FOCS 2016. Unlike all previous efficient polynomial root-finders, their novel method, based on high-order Newton\u27s iterations, involved no coefficients of polynomial p and defined p by oracle (that is, black box subroutine) for its evaluation. Louis and Vempala were motivated by application of their algorithm to fast approximation of an absolutely largest eigenvalue of a symmetric matrix, but we observe other important benefits of black box polynomial root-finders: they are particularly fast for polynomials and are immune to blowing up the coefficient size, which severely limits the efficiency of polynomial root-finders involving coefficients. The root-finder by Louis and Vempala only applies under severe restrictions on the input and output, but devising fast root-finders for more general class of black box polynomials turned out to be hard, and no new progress followed their pioneering work. We found the restrictions in the paper by Louis and Vempala hard to remove based on Newton\u27s iterations, and we do not use these iterations. Working under the supervision of Prof. Pan and jointly with him, we extended Weyl\u27s subdivision method of 1924 to arrive at the second near-optimal root-finder. Unlike its only near-optimal predecessor of 1995, it is a black box polynomial root-finder. Already in its initial implementation it at least competed with user\u27s choice package of root-finding subroutines MPSolve, according to extensive numerical experiments with standard test polynomials. Our auxiliary algorithms and techniques for black box polynomials can be of independent interest
Christianity, imperialism and culture : the expansion of the two Krobo states in Ghana, c. 1830 to 1930
This study is concerned with cultural change in south-eastern Ghana during the colonial period. It examines how the two Krobo states negotiated their dramatic economic and territorial expansion in terms of culture from c. 1830-1930; how they remember their erstwhile settlement on Krobo Mountain and the abandonment of these homesteads; how they coped with the abolition of their national centre and recreated it in their principal farm settlements; how they dealt with and circumvented the prohibition of their principal cults and reinvented new festivals; and how today they mobilise their cultural and historical heritage in the context of ‘development’. While the abolition of the national centre and the principal rites of the Krobo is remembered as an act of colonial violence motivated amongst others by a ‘civilising mission’, the thesis argues that the Krobo themselves initiated this intervention in order to achieve the dramatic expansion and negotiate the necessary political transformation. The Krobo did not merely react or respond to external factors such as colonialism and mission. Rather, they actively drew on them (but also on the culture of the neighbouring Akan states) as resources in order to achieve internal transformations and expand their economy and territory. This explains why today mission and church can be considered part of Krobo tradition. The thesis traces these transformations by looking at ritual, ceremony and dress and by making extensive use of missionary sources combined with documents from the colonial administration and oral history
Neutropenia in cancer patients, risk prediction models of neutropenia, and supportive measures
Epidemiology studies the causes and distribution of population health and disease conditions in defined populations. It identifies risk factors for disease which may help to prevent disease and promote health.
Each year, the American Cancer Society describes the epidemiology of cancer in the USA. Breast cancer and CLL are the most common cancers in women and adults, respectively. European data for CLL are limited. For both cancers, chemotherapy is an important treatment option. But side effects such as neutropenia and infections remain the principal dose-limiting toxicities, which may affect the effectiveness of cancer chemotherapy. Several studies evaluated risk factors for chemotherapy-induced neutropenia (CIN; absolute neutrophil count [ANC] <1.5x10^9/L) and febrile neutropenia (FN; ANC <0.5x10^9/L and oral temperature =38° for more than 1 hour): e.g. older age, recent infection, prior chemotherapy, and planned relative dose intensity greater than 85% of standard chemotherapy dosing. The prophylactic use of granulocyte colony-stimulating factors (G-CSFs) has been shown to be protective.
Based on the above mentioned risk factors, a number of risk prediction models have been developed over the years. Very often, the risk prediction models considered patient-related, tumour-related, treatment-related, or genetic factors. The majority of these models are not validated using an independent dataset. Systematic reviews of G-CSFs to prevent neutropenia are available, but do not include new long-acting G-CSFs or observational study designs.
To address the epidemiology of CLL, the incidence and risk factors of CIN and FN, and to develop and externally validate a risk prediction model for the occurrence of FN including a broad range of risk factors, three quantitative studies were conducted and published. The fourth published study summarised the efficacy, effectiveness and safety of G-CSFs for the prevention of CIN and FN.
For the first study, the author conducted a cohort analysis of the UK Clinical Practice Research Datalink (CPRD) to identify the epidemiology of CLL, the incidence of neutropenia, and changes in medical resource utilisation of CLL patients. Due to limited data regarding the incidence of neutropenia, the study focused on the epidemiology of CLL and medical resource utilisation of CLL patients. The incidence of CLL was 6.2 per 100’000 person-years and remained stable between 2006 and 2011. Medical resource utilisation in CLL patients increased over the time period from 2000 to 2012. Primary care data from the UK CPRD seemed to be valid to determine the incidence of CLL. These data may not reflect the total of medical resource use in CLL patients as chemotherapy and treatment of related complications such as infections and neutropenia are mainly performed in secondary or tertiary care.
The second study addressed the identification of risk factors and the development of a risk prediction model for FN in a hospital-based breast cancer cohort. Risk factors for FN were lower platelet count and haemoglobin, higher alanine aminotransferase (ALT), and specific allele variants of two single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) in a gene involved in multidrug resistance. Genetic testing beforehand might be helpful to identify patients at a very high risk of FN. Predictive performance of the model was improved by adding genetic information but overall remained limited.
The third study used an available risk prediction model for FN in Non-Hodgkin lymphoma (NHL) patients and applied its prediction rules to an independent dataset of NHL patients. Age, weight, baseline white blood cell count, and planned chemotherapy dose were confirmed to predict the risk of FN. However, there was a decrease of the predictive performance in the independent validation dataset. This limits its use in clinical practice. But if successful risk prediction models are developed and externally validated, these may help to optimally target prophylaxis with G-CSFs to those patients at high risk of FN.
Finally, a systematic literature review was conducted to identify studies evaluating the efficacy, effectiveness and safety of G-CSFs in the prevention of CIN and FN. Most studies showed better efficacy and effectiveness for the long-acting pegfilgrastim than daily filgrastim. Efficacy and safety profiles of new long-acting G-CSFs such as lipegfilgrastim and balugrastim were comparable to pegfilgrastim. In times of increasing health care costs and scarce resources, the cost-efficient use of supportive measures is necessary.
The studies this work is based on showed that the availability of and access to appropriate data sources are necessary to develop and systematically validate risk prediction models. The findings contribute to the development of an evidence-based, efficient and cost-efficient approach to prevent neutropenia in cancer patients

Patch-based semantic labelling of images.
PhDThe work presented in this thesis is focused at associating a semantics
to the content of an image, linking the content to high level
semantic categories. The process can take place at two levels: either
at image level, towards image categorisation, or at pixel level, in se-
mantic segmentation or semantic labelling. To this end, an analysis
framework is proposed, and the different steps of part (or patch) extraction,
description and probabilistic modelling are detailed. Parts of
different nature are used, and one of the contributions is a method to
complement information associated to them. Context for parts has to
be considered at different scales. Short range pixel dependences are accounted
by associating pixels to larger patches. A Conditional Random
Field, that is, a probabilistic discriminative graphical model, is used
to model medium range dependences between neighbouring patches.
Another contribution is an efficient method to consider rich neighbourhoods
without having loops in the inference graph. To this end, weak
neighbours are introduced, that is, neighbours whose label probability
distribution is pre-estimated rather than mutable during the inference.
Longer range dependences, that tend to make the inference problem
intractable, are addressed as well. A novel descriptor based on local
histograms of visual words has been proposed, meant to both complement
the feature descriptor of the patches and augment the context
awareness in the patch labelling process. Finally, an alternative approach
to consider multiple scales in a hierarchical framework based
on image pyramids is proposed. An image pyramid is a compositional
representation of the image based on hierarchical clustering. All the
presented contributions are extensively detailed throughout the thesis,
and experimental results performed on publicly available datasets are
reported to assess their validity. A critical comparison with the state
of the art in this research area is also presented, and the advantage in
adopting the proposed improvements are clearly highlighted
