The JACC Journals Ethics Board has voted to retract this paper, relying on the findings of misconduct after an investigation by the University of Oxford (outlined below).The decision to retract the paper follows the conclusion of an investigation under the University of Oxford’s (“the University’s”) Code of Practice and Procedure on Academic Integrity in Research (“the Code”). The Registrar of the University convened a Panel under the Code. The Panel considered a number of issues, including in relation to this paper. The Panel concluded that the first author, Dr Alexander Liu, was responsible for misconduct in research. The Panel’s findings with regards to misconduct were limited to the actions of the first author. No other co-author was found to be involved in the misconduct. It is understood that the first author disagrees with the Panel’s findings. The first author has raised a complaint with the Office of the Independent Adjudicator for Higher Education (OIA) (The OIA reviews complaints from students about their higher education provider). In relation to this paper, the Panel’s findings included that: — certain data had been fabricated by the first author amending the actual study data so that the paper and the central illustration would show a compelling case that T1 mapping could distinguish between epicardial obstructive coronary artery disease and coronary microvascular dysfunction; — the number of control subjects, their age, and the statistical test to calculate the significance of a difference between the patients in this paper were incorrect; and — Figure 2 had been fabricated. The Panel’s view was that this paper would likely need to be retracted from the literature as it had major irregularities and its conclusions were unsafe.     Preclinical studies have convincingly demonstrated a role for the mineralocorticoid receptor (MR) in adipose tissue physiology. These studies show that increased MR activation causes adipocyte dysfunction leading to decreased production of insulin-sensitizing products and increased production of inflammatory factors, creating an environment conducive to metabolic and cardiovascular disease. Accumulating data also suggest that MR activation may be an important link between obesity and metabolic syndrome. Moreover, MR activation may mediate the pathogenic consequences of metabolic syndrome. Recent attempts at reversing cardiometabolic damage in patients with type 2 diabetes using MR antagonists have shown promising results. MR antagonists are already used to treat heart failure where their use decreases mortality and morbidity over and above the use of traditional therapies alone. However, more data are needed to establish the benefits of MR antagonists in diabetes, obesity, and metabolic syndrome

    Introduction  Acute lateral patellar dislocation is a common knee injury pattern. However, coincidental osseous defect may be present in normal knees. Purpose  Evaluate the characteristics of osseous bone defect and describe a new ancillary sign associated with lateral patellar dislocation. Materials and Methods  Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) of 50 consecutive patients referred following a traumatic lateral patellar dislocation of the knee joint and 50 patients with knee pain without MR features of patellar dislocation were obtained for evaluation over a 7-year period. They were analyzed for location of bony defects in the periarticular region. Results  Of the 50 patients who underwent MRI following a reduced traumatic lateral patellar dislocation, 3 patients had an osseous “crater” of more than 2 mm in depth on the non-articular surface of the lateral femoral condyle. None of control group of patients had an osseous defect measuring more than 2 mm in depth. Conclusion  This associated finding of an osseous “crater” of more than 2 mm on the non-articular surface of the lateral femoral condyle following traumatic lateral patellar dislocation is a rare occurrence. We highlight this as an ancillary sign of lateral patellar dislocation necessitating careful evaluation (Crater sign of Bhamidipaty Rajesh Iyengar Kartik [BRIK]). The presence of lateral femoral condyle “CRATER” sign of BRIK on MRI undertaken for other reasons in the knee, in the absence of osseous edema may suggest a past episode of severe, reduced patellar dislocation

    Investigation on Strength Durability and Crack Healing Efficiency of Natural Fiber Reinforced Bacterial Concrete under Various Exposures

    Concrete is the most broadly utilized construction material due to its availability and cost. It is more susceptible to cracks, allowing chemical substances and water to enter and deteriorate the materials over time, as well as affecting the durability properties of structures. In recent years, the use of bacteria and natural fibers in concrete has not only reduced cracks but also enhanced its strength and durability. Microbial-induced carbonate precipitation (MICP) is highly acceptable in concrete to improve rheological and crack repair properties. In the current research isolated five bacteria from various locations and subjected to basic tests such as urease enzyme activity, CaCO3 production, and pH growth. The bacteria Bacillus paramycoides was isolated from concrete efflorescence and showed good results in basic tests. It was used in concrete with hybrid combinations of coir, flax, and jute, and the results were studied. The bacteria (self-healing agent) was added to natural fiber reinforced concrete using direct addition (DA) and immobilization (IM) techniques. Compared to control and DA, IM rendered improved values in strength, durability and crack healing properties. The strength results of IM specimens showed improved compressive strength by 25.95%, compressive strength regain by 61.45%, split tensile strength by 45.65%, flexural strength by 28% and impact strength by 444.92%. The IM samples under durability tests, showed 85.41% reduction in sorptivity, 2% strength loss in chloride exposures, and 2% strength loss in sulphate exposure. The average rate of crack healing (internal and external) for pre-cracked cube samples (crack range - 0.3 to 1.2 mm) after 28 days of full-wet curing, wet-dry curing, normal soil curing, and marine soil curing was 87.85%, 96.18%, 79.86%, and 49.66%, respectively. The corrosion level of reinforced steel bars under chloride curing was assessed, using gravimetric analysis. At 270 days, the corrosion level of embedded bars from bacterial samples (DA and IM) showed a range of 0.07–0.23%. The microstructure study was carried using Scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray diffractometers (XRD), and Energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS). It was concluded that the presence of aragonite, calcite and vaterite (polymorphs of CaCO3) in bacterial samples is due to the biological activity of Bacillus paramycoides with a natural fiber-reinforced cementitious system

    Male-mediated dominant lethal mutations in mice following prooxidant treatment

    This study’s primary aim is to examine if prooxidant treatment has the propensity to induce dominant lethal DL type mutations in a randomly bred closed colony of CFT-Swiss mice. Initially, graded doses of both organic hydroperoxides viz.,t-butyl hydroperoxide tbHP , and cumene hydroperoxide cHP were administered i.p. to adult males and the mortality data was analysed to determine the LD values. cHP was relatively more toxic compared to tbHP. The computed LD50 values were 1500 and 3000 mmol kg body weight for cHP and tbHP, respectively. Subsequently, adult males were administered with LD doses of hydroperoxide HP tbHP — 30 mmol 100 g body weight and cHP — 15 50 mmol 100 g body weight on 5 consecutive days and were mated with virgin females for a period of 5 weeks to characterise the male-mediated DL mutations. Male-based analysis of the three major variables viz., implantations, live embryos and dead implants DI were carried out to assess the DL-type response induction. While tbHP induced significant increases 2- to 5-fold in the incidence of DI during the first 4 weeks, cHP induced a marginal increase only during the first week. These results suggest that prooxidants induce DL-type effect only in specific post-meiotic stages of spermatogenesis and stress the need to further investigate the implications of chronic oxidative stress on the male reproductive system
