„Dirty Hands” versus „Clean Models”, czyli o potrzebie międzydyscyplinarnych badań w ekonomii i socjologii. Nowe imperatywy badawcze w naukach społecznych

The aim of the article is to present new challenges of sociology and economics — entangled in the context of globalization, market segmentation, and the so-called consumer society. The effect of these changes is the need to make interdisciplinary exploration of new research areas an imperative. The article contains a cross-sectional, historical outline of economic sociology and the reasons for the development of the heterodoxic currents of economics. This applies to the critical analysis of economy and the problems of its polarization according to S. Sassen, the theory of social rooting of the economy by M. Granovetter, sociology of economy at Harvard University, models of W. Morawski, or the “dirty hands” and “clean” models of P. Hirsch, S. Michaels, and R. Friedman. The most important value is demonstrating the need for interdisciplinarity in modern economics and redefining the position of disciplines with low social prestige; including them in the mainstream research. It became crucial to reject the discourse on generating and defining discipline boundaries. The imperative adopted in this way results from the belief that contemporary reality requires not only an economic analysis, but also the metaphorical “joining of forces” within humanities, social, as well as hard sciences.Celem artykułu jest wskazanie nowych wyzwań socjologii i ekonomii — uwikłanych w kontekst zjawisk globalizacji, segmentacji rynku i „społeczeństwa konsumentów”. Efektem tych przemian jest potrzeba postawienia imperatywu interdyscyplinarnego eksplorowania nowych obszarów badawczych. Artykuł zawiera przekrojowy rys historyczny socjologii ekonomicznej oraz asumptów do rozwoju heterodoksyjnych nurtów ekonomii. Dotyczy to krytycznej analizy gospodarki i problemów jej polaryzacji według S. Sassen, teorii społecznego zakorzenienia gospodarki M. Granovettera, socjologii gospodarki na Uniwersytecie Harvarda, modeli W. Morawskiego, czy tez o „brudnych łapach” i „czystych modelach” P. Hirscha, S. Michaelsa i R. Friedmana. Największą wartością jest wykazanie potrzeby interdyscyplinarności współczesnej ekonomii i redefiniowania pozycji dyscyplin o niskim prestiżu społecznym, włączając je do głównego nurtu badawczego.

Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

    Get PDF
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed

New agendas of consumer socialization in the educational process

Thesis. The aim of the article is to present the impact of mega and macro-levels on the formation of new consumer socialization agendas in the educational process. The article is an attempt to explain the assumption that today the educational process is associated not only with changes in values or changes in defining the family, but also protests in the automotive industry in the 1930s, production allocation, marketing, globalization, consumerism, development of new media and the transformation in Poland.  Concepts discussed. The analysis combines the theories on the issues of broadly understood consumption, including the theory of The consumer society by Zygmunt Bauman, or the branding of the nation by James McNeal with several approaches to social changes and globalization in the 20th and 21st centuries, among which the Beverly Silver’s thesis was crucial.  Results and conclusions. The article draws attention to the issue of com modification of the individual and the "market game" associated with the success and social promotion of a family mediated by child development - "the most expensive investment". The cognitive value of the approach. The most important value is the original, not undertaken so far, perspective of analyzing the educational process of a modern child: not only in the context of a family, environment and consumption, but also the processes of change in the work organization and organization. The adopted imperative results from the belief that contemporary reality requires not only psychological analysis from the perspective of the individual or sociological analysis of the group and the education system, but problems taking place at the international level, adopting Samuel Huntington's thesis on the consolidation of the world economy.Teza. Wyniki i wnioski.

Case study: lost identity and the New Synagogue in Częstochowa : Architecture of the houses of prayer as contemporary places of non-memory in culturally homogeneous cities

The aim of the article is to show the social context of synagogue architecture on the example of the hitherto unexplored New Synagogue in Czestochowa. The analysis is an attempt to show the relationship between the location of the monument in the urban structure and the experiences of the minority, the history of the community and the Jewish community in the city. Due to the nature of the topic, the analysis was based on the research of archival materials, which is the basic method of work within the art history discipline. In addition to the study of the inventory materials and the object itself, the content of the article refers to the theses of the most important researchers of synagogue architecture and town planning in Poland. An important context of the work were ethnographic and memory-related themes, which are an attempt to present the topic of synagogue architecture in a wider, social context. The greatest value of the paper is the original, so far unprecedented attempt to implement an interdisciplinary perspective in the analysis of synagogues. Moreover, the article deals with the subject of the New Synagogue in Czestochowa, which has not been subject to any systematic study so far. This article was written as part of over six years of research that I am conducting on this subject (research mainly in the context of the architecture of the New Synagogue in Czestochowa)

    Variations on the Author

“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship

Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis

We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Finally, we show by means of an example that our findings have a high practical relevance.information science;Pearson correlation;cosine;similarity measure;author cocitation analysis

Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts

    Get PDF
We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. It is argued that increasingly available digital full text research papers make it possible for citation analysis studies to go beyond what the ISI databases have directly supported and to employ more sophisticated methods
