Structured Deformations of Continua: Theory and Applications
The scope of this contribution is to present an overview of the theory of structured deformations of continua, together with some applications. Structured deformations aim at being a unified theory in which elastic and plastic behaviours, as well as fractures and defects can be described in a single setting. Since its introduction in the scientific community of rational mechanicists [10], the theory has been put in the framework of variational calculus [8], thus allowing for solution of problems via energy minimization. Some background, three problems and a discussion on future directions are presented

The scope of this contribution is to present an overview of the theory of structured deformations of continua and two applications, all of which involve using this rather new formulation of mechanics problems in contexts that are different from one another, thus showing the power and versatility of the theory
Self-propelled micro-swimmers in a Brinkman fluid
We prove an existence, uniqueness, and regularity result for the motion of a self-propelled micro-swimmer in a particulate viscous medium, modelled as a Brinkman fluid. A suitable functional setting is introduced to solve the Brinkman system for the velocity field and the pressure of the fluid by variational techniques. The equations of motion are written by imposing a self-propulsion constraint, thus allowing the viscous forces and torques to be the only ones acting on the swimmer. From an infinite-dimensional control on the shape of the swimmer, a system of six ordinary differential equations for the spatial position and the orientation of the swimmer is obtained. This is dealt with standard techniques for ordinary differential equations, once the coefficients are proved to be measurable and bounded. The main result turns out to extend an analogous result previously obtained for the Stokes system
Boundary Behavior and Confinement of Screw Dislocations
In this note we discuss two aspects of screw dislocations dynamics: their behavior near the boundary and a way to confine them inside the material. In the former case, we obtain analytical results on the estimates of collision times (one dislocation with the boundary and two dislocations with opposite Burgers vectors with each other); numerical evidence is also provided. In the latter, we obtain analytical results stating that, under imposing a certain type of boundary conditions, it is energetically favorable for dislocations to remain confined inside the domain
Contenuto vs. contenitore? Criteri predittivi di impatto e soglie di resilienza nella prospettiva del recupero sostenibile
Uno dei terreni sul quale si gioca la prospettiva del recupero sostenibile del patrimonio costruito è oggi costituito dalla valorizzazione del patrimonio stesso. Né un approccio intransigentemente refrattario alle istanze di riuso del bene, né quello opposto, orientato al contrario al suo sfruttamento economico, a carico di una troppo gravosa compressione delle stesse esigenze di conservazione, appaiono di fatto perseguibili in una prospettiva di medio periodo. A partire dagli esiti di una ricerca recentemente conclusa, si intende affrontare la questione con una prospettiva organica, in una logica “life cycle oriented”
