Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
Variations on the Author
“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis
We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts
We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued
use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation
counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. It is argued that increasingly available digital full text research papers make it possible for citation analysis studies to go beyond what the ISI databases have directly supported and to employ more

We have done our best to complete the author checklist relating to the use of animals in the hut study. Note that the objective for the hut study was to evaluate the IRS treatment applications for residual efficacy against Anopheles mosquitoes, including the local An. coluzzii mosquito population. Cows were only used to attract mosquitoes into the huts and no tests were carried out directly on the cows. The author checklist is intended for use with studies where experiments are carried out on animals, which is why we have had such difficulty in completing this for the hut study, as many of the questions do not relate to how the cows were used
Quelques résultats de factorialité pour des algèbres de von Neumann associées à des groupes localement compacts
This thesis investigates von Neumann algebras of locally compact groups and crossed products arising from continuous actions of locally compact groups on von Neumann algebras. In particular, I study the following question: under what conditions do these von Neumann algebras have a trivial center? Since the case of discrete groups is already well understood, my attention is directed towards non-discrete groups and their actions. In the first chapter, I establish a new quantitative criterion of factoriality for totally disconnected groups that generalizes the "icc" criterion for discrete groups. From this, I deduce that the von Neumann algebra of a Neretin group is a type II factor, which provides a new proof that Neretin groups are not of type I. I also show how the methods employed yield factoriality for certain von Neumann algebras associated to groups acting on trees, or for corners of these. In a second step, I prove factoriality for certain crossed products by groups satisfying the aforementioned criterion. This applies, for example, to the crossed product coming from the action of a Neretin group on the boundary of its tree: the resulting algebra is a type III factor. In the second chapter, I study crossed products arising from actions of a locally compact group G on a factor M. Such an action is said to be strictly outer if the inclusion of M into the crossed product is irreducible, which is a strong form of factoriality. When the group G is discrete, this property is equivalent to the outerness of the action of G, and Marrakchi and Vaes showed that this equivalence persists for actions of locally compact groups on full factors. It is known that this equivalence fails for general factors. In this chapter, I consider natural strengthenings of the notion of outerness: I prove that every "spectrally outer" action on an arbitrary factor is strictly outer. When the factor M is semifinite, this implies that every "topologically outer" action is strictly outer, thus answering a question posed by Marrakchi and Vaes.Dans cette thèse, je m'intéresse aux algèbres de von Neumann de groupes localement compacts ainsi qu'aux produits croisés obtenus lorsqu'un groupe localement compact agit continûment sur une algèbre de von Neumann. J'étudie en particulier à la question suivante : quand est-ce que ces algèbres de von Neumann ont-elles un centre trivial ? Le cas des groupes discrets étant déjà largement compris, je me concentre sur les groupes et actions de groupes non-discrets. Dans un premier chapitre, j'établis un nouveau critère quantitatif de factorialité pour les groupes totalement discontinus, qui généralise le critère "icc" des groupes discrets. J'en déduis que l'algèbre de von Neumann d'un groupe de Neretin est un facteur de type II, ce qui fournit une nouvelle démonstration du fait que les groupes de Neretin ne sont pas de type I. Je montre aussi comment les méthodes employées permettent d'obtenir la factorialité de certaines algèbres de groupes agissant sur des arbres, ou de coins de ces dernières. Dans un deuxième temps, je démontre la factorialité de certains produits croisés par des groupes satisfaisant le critère de factorialité précédent. Cela s'applique par exemple au produit croisé obtenu via l'action d'un groupe de Neretin sur le bord de son arbre : le facteur obtenu est un facteur de type III. Dans un second chapitre, je considère le produit croisé provenant d'une action d'un groupe localement compact G sur un facteur M. Une telle action est dite strictement extérieure si l'inclusion de M dans le produit croisé est irréductible, ce qui est une forme forte de factorialité. Lorsque le groupe G est discret, cette propriété est équivalente à l'extériorité de l'action de G, et Marrakchi et Vaes ont montré que cette équivalence persistait pour des actions de groupes localement compacts sur des facteurs pleins. On sait que cette équivalence n'est pas valable pour des facteurs génériques. Dans ce chapitre, je considère des renforcements naturels de la notion d'extériorité : je montre que toute action " spectralement" extérieure sur un facteur quelconque est strictement extérieure. Lorsque le facteur M est semi-fini, cela implique que toute action "topologiquement" extérieure est strictement extérieure, ce qui répond à une question posée par Marrakchi et Vaes
