Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
Variations on the Author
“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis
We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Finally, we show by means of an example that our findings have a high practical relevance.information science;Pearson correlation;cosine;similarity measure;author cocitation analysis
Due to a business diversification and internationalization in the last decades, companies operations became increasingly complex and their financial statements no longer provide the users with a full comprehension of the company as a whole. As a result, the disclosure of information by segments is nowadays an important issue of report as well as, an essential basis of analysis for assessing companies’ risks and returns. Anticipating the application of IASB standards for the year 2005, Portugal developed his national accounting standard for segment reporting, which we identify as almost a copy of IAS 14 published in 1997. The empirical study investigates the implementation level of DC 27 (2000) on Portuguese nonfinancial entities with securities traded in Euronext Lisbon market. For that propose four research questions were established: i) what are the main characteristics of segment reporting structure in Portugal? ii) what are the characteristics and the number of reported segments? iii) are Portuguese companies disclosing the information items demanded by DC 27 (2000) and iv) are segments disclosure practices of Portuguese companies related to their size, results and degree of internationalization? The evidence shows a mixed result on compliance with standard objectives and rules. The average number of segments is aligned with other standards implementation. In opposite, most of the companies failed to fulfil with all items required for principal format. We also concluded that size is positively related to the number of segments and items disclosed, and the companies’ results are negatively associated with the disclosing of those items
Public-private partnerships, where concession contracts are included, have assumed an increasing importance in recent years as a form of contracting and managing public
services. Such evolution, associated with recent accounting concepts, has led to the
questioning of the generally adopted accounting practices and the need of an orienting
standard.
In this context, IASB created a special group for the study of this problematic, which led
to the elaboration of a new interpretation for application of the accounting periods initiated
on or after January 1.st of 2008, the IFRIC 12 – Service Concession Arrangements. This
interpretation establishes two models of accounting assets affected to the concession –
Intangible assets versus financial assets – as the risk sharing and its effects on revenue
recognition. The European Union approved the IFRIC 12 through the Commission
Regulation (CE) n. º 254/2009, published on March 26th, stating that companies operating
under International Accounting Standards should adopt IFRIC 12 by the latest, on the
commencement date of their first financial year, after the date of enforcement of the
referred Regulation.
The present work focuses on the accounting treatment that should be given to these types
of arrangements, more incisively on the new vision brought about by the IFRIC 12,
without disregarding the analysis of the general procedures adopted by Portuguese
companies and the already existent experiences of the transition into this new regulation
The entire apparatus provided by the industrial was with its organizational, bureaucratic
and hierarchical systems needed to make a room for a faster organization in order to keep its
competitiveness and, more than that, survive.
Presently, these organizations live in a context characterized by a multitude of variables
and complex forces, caused by the agents who act in the environment and who bring changes and
turbulences to the organizational performance. Such an environment often varies, now causing
threats and pressures that the organization needs to avoid or neutralize, then giving chances,
facilities and advantages that need to be profited in benefit of business success. However, it is in
such environment that the organization obtains its resources, its technology, and puts its products
and services, making revenues and conquering results.
This study presents the case of a Brazilian company’s retail that, in late 90s, re-structured
itself in business units.
Initially, the goal was to verify the reasons that led to the decision of de-centering its
activities, aiming at understanding the impacts on the decision-making process with the
implementation of the decentralization in the business units.
The results show the factors contributing to the decentralization, the difficulties
confronted in the process and the utilization of performance measures in order to deal with the
new structure
e as IAS/IFRS.
Against a background of intense globalization of markets and economies, the
dichotomies between countries in terms of economic and financial reporting will
diminish supported by the growing need for harmonization of accounting.
In Portugal, the harmonization process took a major step in 2005 when required the
application of IAS / IFRS by a particular group of companies. With the approval of the
SNC in 2009, will come into force after 1st January of 2010, we will approach, the
reporting standards applied in most European countries.
The aim is to verify if the changes resulting from the implementation of new accounting
standards outcome as fluctuations in the relevant economic and financial indicators for
which data are supported in reporting information submitted by the company and other
relevant market or external entities.
In the sample, we analyze the impacts on the results obtained in the calculation of
financial ratios of a Portuguese company over the past 4 years, according to financial
statements prepared in accordance with the POC and IAS / IFRS.
This study concluded that the use of POC accounting standards and IAS / IFRS (base
considered in the SNC standards) results in different ratios values, and allow us to
verify that financial report prepared by POC standards has comparability limits with the
countries that integrates the accounting harmonization process developed by the IASB
and adopted in European Union
The European Union has demanded the application of international accounting standards since 2005 for firms quoted and governed by the law of a Member State, when they prepare their consolidated statements. Several prior studies, like Barth et al. (2008) and Chen et al. (2010) have proven that financial reporting quality is higher after firms adopt IAS/IFRS. However, the evolution of financial reporting quality cannot be similar between countries, follow Nobes (2011), the national patterns have continued into IAS/IFRS practice, although attempt accounting harmonization.
Therefore, the purpose of this empirical study is to verify the influence of mandatory adoption of IAS/IFRS in financial reporting quality, as well as, intending to verify if mandatory adoption has influenced financial reporting quality similarly in each country. In this order, our sample is based on countries, whose accounting systems were tax dominated in the past, specifically Belgium, Italy and France.
To achieve this purpose we’ve used the same quality metrics that Barth et al. (2008), widely used in prior studies to analyse the evolution in earnings management, timely loss recognition and value relevance.
The results show that financial reporting quality in the pre-adoption period isn’t higher than in the post-adoption period, when the firms used the local standards and generally, it has decreased between the three countries studied, specifically in earnings management and timely loss recognition
In recent years leasing has become a significant source of financing for many companies.
However, the existence of different types of leases (finance and operating lease) allows
accounting for similar transactions differently.
Based on lease accounting literature, this research aims to determine what factors influence
companies to choose one or both forms of leases and what are the determinants of operating e
finance lease intensity.
The empirical study has been placed on a sample of 100 companies listed on the Euronext 100
Index as at December 2008 and financial information for the same year was obtained from the
Worldscope database and the published annual reports of companies in the sample.
The findings suggest that larger companies tend to use both types of lease simultaneously.
The industry in which the company operates can determine whether it uses one or both forms
of leases and results also showed that lack of liquidity is positive related with the use of
finance and operating leases together.
When analyzing the leasing decision between finance and operating lease, we find strong
evidence that companies that use operating leases are more likely to be larger and less
profitable than companies that do not use, while low leverage and high yields are common
characteristics of intensive financial lease companies
