    On the trend detection of time-ordered intensity images of point processes on linear networks

    Spatial point processes on linear networks are increasingly getting attention in different disciplines such as traffic accidents and street crime analysis. Dealing with a set of time-ordered point patterns on a linear network over a period, helps in obtaining a time series of estimated intensity images. In this article, we combine the problem of estimating the intensity and relative risk of point patterns on linear networks with trend detection in time-ordered observations. Taking the temporal autocorrelation between consecutive time-ordered intensity and relative risk images into account, we make use of the Mann–Kendall trend test to look for potential locations in the network where the estimated intensity and/or relative risk show evidence of a monotonic trend.     Gene expression profile of placentomes and clinical parameters in the cows with retained placenta

    BACKGROUND: Retained placenta (RP) is a prevalent disorder in cattle with many health-related and economic costs for the farm owners. Its etiology has not been clarified yet and there is no definite therapy for this disorder. In this study we conducted RNA-seq, hematologic and histologic experiments to survey the causes of RP development. METHODS: Blood samples were collected from 4 RP and 3 healthy cows during periparturtion period for hematological assessments followed by placentome sampling within 30 min after parturition. Cows were grouped as RP and control in case the placenta was retained or otherwise expelled, respectively. Total RNA was extracted from placentome samples followed by RNA-sequencing. RESULTS: We showed 240 differentially expressed genes (DEGs) between the RP and control groups. Enrichment analyzes indicated immune system and lipid metabolism as prominent over- and under-represented pathways in RP cows, respectively. Hormonal assessments showed that estradiol-17β (E2) was lower and cortisol tended to be higher in RP cows compared to controls at the day of parturition. Furthermore, histologic experiment showed that villi-crypt junctions remain tighter in RP cows compared to controls and the crypts layer seemed thicker in the placentome of RP cows. Complete blood cell (CBC) parameters were not significantly different between the two groups. CONCLUSION: Overall, DEGs derived from expression profiling and these genes contributed to enrichment of immune and lipid metabolism pathways. We suggested that E2 could be involved in development of RP and the concentrations of P4 and CBC counts periparturition might not be a determining factor.     Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

    The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed.     Automated detection of prostate cancer using wavelet transform features of ultrasound RF time series

    The aim of this research was to investigate the performance of wavelet transform based features of ultrasound radiofrequency (RF) time series for automated detection of prostate cancer tumors in transrectal ultrasound images. Sequential frames of RF echo signals from 35 extracted prostate specimens were recorded in parallel planes, while the ultrasound probe and the tissue were fixed in position in each imaging plane. The sequence of RF echo signal samples corresponding to a particular spot in tissue imaging plane constitutes one RF time series. Each region of interest (ROI) of ultrasound image was represented by three groups of features of its time series, namely, wavelet, spectral and fractal features. Wavelet transform approximation and detail sequences of each ROI were averaged and used as wavelet features. The average value of the normalized spectrum in four quarters of the frequency range along with the intercept and slope of a regression line fitted to the values of the spectrum versus normalized frequency plot formed six spectral features. Fractal dimension (FD) of the RF time series were computed based on the Higuchi's approach. A support vector machine (SVM) classifier was used to classify the ROIs. The results indicate that combining wavelet coefficient based features with previously proposed spectral and fractal features of RF time series data would increase the area under ROC curve from 93.1% to 95.0%, respectively. Furthermore, the accuracy, sensitivity, and specificity increases to 91.7%, 86.6%, and 94.7%, from 85.7%, 85.2%, and 86.1%, respectively, using only spectral and fractal features.     “Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship

    Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis

    We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature.     Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts

    We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. It is argued that increasingly available digital full text research papers make it possible for citation analysis studies to go beyond what the ISI databases have directly supported and to employ more sophisticated methods

    We have done our best to complete the author checklist relating to the use of animals in the hut study. Note that the objective for the hut study was to evaluate the IRS treatment applications for residual efficacy against Anopheles mosquitoes, including the local An. coluzzii mosquito population. Cows were only used to attract mosquitoes into the huts and no tests were carried out directly on the cows. The author checklist is intended for use with studies where experiments are carried out on animals, which is why we have had such difficulty in completing this for the hut study, as many of the questions do not relate to how the cows were used
