    India, the United States and South Asia: potential strains and complications

    After several incidents occurring close together, there is the possibility of strains appearing in India-US relations if the trend is not arrested. It requires a “message” to reach the Indian public, over the heads of their “managed” political leaderships. This could lead to public pressure on the leaders in ways that America does not always understand. One incident concerns reports of the ‘US acquiring a military base in Maldives’, which has been stoutly denied by Washington. Ahead of presidential polls later this year and parliamentary elections in the next, Maldives has since indicated that it cannot approve the US draft and that it’s in no great hurry to conclude it. The other relates to the creation of a congressional caucus in the US on the forgotten “Khalistan issue”, from independent India’s none-too-distant past. A more recent, third episode refers to reports that India is fifth in the rank of countries that US intelligence agencies are hacking the internet services of and eavesdropping on at a global level. Key points The US is beginning to be seen as not doing enough to support India in the post-Cold War era. Reports emanating from both public and political fora refer to US engagement with individual countries in South Asia, possibly behind the back of India and with indifference to anti-India sentiments in those countries; this could become a cause of strain in India-US relations. The “String of Pearls” theory, which has demonised China in the Indian mind, may have to come in for review. Already, India is revisiting its neighbourhood policy, established in the years immediately after the Cold War, to reassess and reassert its traditional supremacy in the region. A coalition government in India after the poll scheduled for May 2014, could initiate a review of India’s foreign policy and geo-strategic priorities in the short-term, over the head of the two “national parties”, the ruling Congress and the opposition BJP, which seem to have developed some kind of a bipartisan approach on national issues, although that has not always held. Bilateral relations with India offer substantial possibilities for the US, but other possibilities have also opened up for India. Even while continuing with a policy of “cautious optimism” towards each other, India and China seem to be adopting the step-by-step realisation of a calibrated normalisation of bilateral ties, which, however, may take some time to come

    Abstract: High speed, precision, ultra-precise machining technology is an important trend of advanced manufacturing Engineering. The high-speed motorized spindle enable to attaining greater complexity and accuracy, which demands rotating machinery to be run at high speeds. Non contacting magnetic bearing are suitable for supporting the spindle and rotor in the rotating machinery because of the high temperatures generated by the contact between the spindle and bearing. The basics of Active Magnetic Bearing technology, material selection and working of hybrid active magnetic bearing of high speed spindle are well described. The analytical derivation of the forces in a Hybrid magnetic bearing is described and the initial parameter design is done with magnetic circuit. From the initial parameter the permanent magnet is designed through FEA using ANSYS workbench. Finally, simulation of the designed magnetic bearing for magnetic flux density and force dependency of current coil and rotor position are done. From the prediction of current stiffness and position stiffness we found that current stiffness provide more linearity than position stiffness

    Numerical Analysis of Influential Parameters on the Performance of Vertical-Cylindrical Refinery Furnaces

    AbstractAn integrated heat transfer modeling of vertical-cylindrical refinery furnaces was carried out to determine the influential parameters on the fired heaters efficiency as well as the process and flue gas temperature variations. The model was developed considering separate sections of the heater encompassing heat of the flue gas. The model was solved by an iterative procedure with initial boundary conditions. The developed model along with its solution was compiled in MATLAB R2013a environment. The parameters involved into the devised model form the basis for the determination of the most influential parameters on the performance of fired heaters. The sensitivity analysis was accomplished via examining five parameters including excess air, tube pitch, inlet air temperature, fuel composition, and fuel flow rate. Model validation reveals that the model results reasonably agree with the experimental data with less than 4% deviation. The sensitivity analysis demonstrated that varying the five influential parameters by 5% from a base case altered the furnace efficiency by 2.69%, 0.93%, 0.22%, 0.21%, and 0.07%, respectively. The devised model can be employed to reduce computing time and technical costs afforded by the use of computational fluid dynamics (CFD) analysis

    This study presents the optimization of Machining parameters on AM60 Mg alloy manufactured by Gravity Die Casting and with responses supported orthogonal array with Grey relation analysis. Focuses on the optimization of Machining input parameters using the technique to get minimum surface roughness, Minimum Tool Wear, Cutting Time, Power Requirement, Torque and Maximum MRR. A number of Machining trails were conducted based on the L9 orthogonal array on CNC machine. The experiments were performed on AM60 alloy using cutting tool of an ISO 460.1-1140-034A0-XM GC3 of 12,16 and 25 mm diameter with cutting point 140 degrees, throughout the experimental work under different cutting conditions. Grey relation analysis & ANOVA were used to work out the fore most important parameters Cutting speed, feed rate, Depth of Cut and Tool Diameter which affects the Response. The expected response and measured response are fairly close. The given model could be used to select the level of Machining parameters
