Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
Exploring the Interface of Genetics, Genomics, and Older Adults
This dissertation addresses the interface of genetics, genomics, and older adults through a collection of three manuscripts that examine genetic and genomic testing and decision-making across age groups. The dissertation offers evaluations of a new lens for decision-making in genetics and genomics, a contextualization of the differences and similarities of perceptions and beliefs that exist among age groups engaging in direct-to-consumer personal genetic testing (DTC PGT), an identification of two factors that influence the decision to engage in DTC PGT, and an expansion of the current applications of Protection Motivation Theory to include disclosure, finance, and advance directive-management behaviors related to DTC PGT results.
Together these three manuscripts support and expand on previous understandings about older adults and decision-making in genetics and genomics. The dissertation findings identify many unique qualities of the 60+year old age group while also finding similarities that span age groups. These findings support the need for further examination of both age-group differences and the phenomenon of genetic or genomic decision-making. The differences and similarities among age groups will provide initial findings on which future work in decision-making and decision-support can be built. The dissertation’s focus on context as a key component of decision-making is both timely and forward looking. The need to create unique and informed decision-support interventions is growing as the personalized medicine movement begins to bring in more genetic information. Consumer-driven healthcare demands consumer-sensitive approaches. The use of behavioral economics and the Protection Motivation Theory as guides will help healthcare professionals to address the age-group differences and the individual contexts that shape the genetic decision-making process
Genomics and the right to health autonomy: A survey of international health policies

Purpose: Nursing leadership in the international community spans many areas including health policy development. international health policies are varied in their subject matter and acceptance. With the development of new technologies and methods of accessing and using genomic data, many international policies regarding genomic science and patient autonomy have been created. Nurses must be aware of international policies and their impact on patient care. Additionally nurses must take an interest in their roles as advocates for patients\u27 rights to health.
Methods: This review of current international genomic policies and documents incorporates thematic review as a method for understanding current thinking with regard to genomics and patient autonomy.
Results: This review reveals the rich history of genomic policy starting with the 1948 Universal Declaration of Human Rights. The development of genomic health policies has been closely aligned with the policies regarding a patient\u27s right to autonomy. The underlying constructs of these key areas of policy are very similar and their close association is central to nursing\u27s role in the future of genomics and international health policy.
Conclusion: International health policy development regarding genomics has great influence on science and research of the future. As scientists and patient advocates nurses benefit from having an understanding of international health policy and the right to health. Better understanding of the themes of genomics and patient autonomy will help nurses in their roles as leaders in the development of future international health policies and patient advocacy
Variations on the Author
“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis
We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts
We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued
use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation
counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases.
