    PET/CT in Neuroendocrine Tumors.

PET/CT using different radiotracers is becomming the modality of choice to study Neuroendocrine tumours. The advantages of the use of PET/CT in comparison to morphological imaging modalities is discussed and metabolic and receptor tracers are described in detail

    Somatostatin Receptor PET/CT

    No full text
Somatostatin receptor PET-CThemploys positron emitting tracers (68Ga-DOTA-peptides) that specifically bind to somatostatin receptors (ssr) expressed on tumor cell surface and has been used mainly for the assessment of neuroendocrine tumors (NETs). NETs derive from neuroendocrine cells widely dispersed in the human body and present an increased expression of ssr, particularly of ssr2. 68Ga-DOTA-peptides are very accurate for the assessment of well-differentiated NETs, since being slow-growing tumors, they are not clearly visualized on 18F-FDG PET-CT scans

Durable Complete Response to Frontline Docetaxel in an Advanced Prostate Cancer Patient with Favourable CYP1B1 Isoforms: Suggestion for Changing Paradigms?

    No full text
Docetaxel is currently indicated for androgen-independent, metastatic prostate cancer; there is also evidence demonstrating the role of CYP1B1 in modulating the activity of the drug. We present the case of a man with residual disease after radical prostatectomy treated successfully with docetaxel chemotherapy. After only two cycles of therapy, a complete remission was obtained and then consolidated with additional cycles of docetaxel and radiotherapy. Prospective genetic analysis had shown that the patient had a favourable CYP1B1 genotype. He has been disease free since August 2006. Prospective trials investigating this strategy are warranted

Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed

Incidentally detected increased FDG uptake in bowel and its correlation with hystopathological data: our experience in a case series study.

When an intense intestinal FDG accumulation occurs, especially if focal, it can be referred to either physiological intestinal activity or bowel disease, thus leading to a radical change in patient's prognosis. Within a year, we recommended a colonoscopy to 103 of 7365 patients who were subjected to a total body FDG PET/CT. In a case-series study, we re-evaluated the patients and their lesions if already investigated with colonoscopy and biopsy. Only 18 patients were included in our study, but in none of them biopsy was negative and 3 adenocarcinomas, 8 adenomas, 5 inflammatory patterns, 1 hyperplastic polyp and 1 eosinophilic infiltrate were diagnosed. In 16 patients, no suspicion was present and diagnosis was absolutely incidental. Besides, among the three major groups (adenocarcinomas, adenomas and phlogosis), SUVmax values were significantly different. Adenocarcinomas are linked with high SUVmax values (ranging from 8.3 to 20.2) and large size (ranging from 26 to 43 mm). PET/CT sensitivity is low in detecting adenomas, being 71.4% if they are larger than 6 mm and 50% if SUVmax is lower than 4.9. SUVmax values in inflammatory lesions can range from 5.7 to 12. Colorectal cancer is still the second leading cause of cancer death, for this reason in many countries screening programs have been approved and colonoscopy is considered the golden standard. PET/CT cannot be considered as a screening test, but if it incidentally reveals intestinal abnormalities, this data cannot be underestimated and colonoscopy is highly recommended

    Variations on the Author

“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship

Asymptomatic glucagonoma presenting with an isolated hepatic nodule

A 37-year-old male patient, without any particular symptoms apart from moderate right upper quadrant postprandial pain, was found to have a liver mass identified as a glucagon-producing tumor. Plasma glucagon levels were slightly increased, whereas those of other gut peptides were within the normal range. Despite an extensive pre- and intraoperative diagnostic work-up, a presumed primary glucagonoma remained undetected. This unusual presentation with the absence of any symptoms typical of glucagonoma, as well as the presence of histopathological features characteristic of both benign and malignant forms of glucagonoma, make this case very peculiar. A clinically silent, apparently unrelated adenocarcinoma of the left colon was also found. The concomitant presence of a glucagonoma and a carcinoma of the large intestine has not been previously reported, and its significance remains unclear

Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis

We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Finally, we show by means of an example that our findings have a high practical relevance.information science;Pearson correlation;cosine;similarity measure;author cocitation analysis
