Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
The oncoprotein Myc controls the phosphorylation of S6 kinase and AKT through protein phosphatase 2A
This study focuses on the effects of Myc oncoprotein on the translational apparatus of the cell. Translation is an energy consuming process that involves a large number of accessory factors. The production of components of the protein synthesis machinery can be regulated at the transcriptional level by specific factors. It has been shown that the product of the oncogene Myc, a transcription factor frequently activated in cancer, can control translational activity through an increase in the transcription of the eIF4F complex components (eIF4E, eIF4AI, and eIF4GI). However, additional effects at the posttranslational level have also been described. For instance, it has been shown that Myc upregulation can induce mammalian target of rapamycin (mTOR)-dependent 4E-binding protein 1 (4E-BP1) hyperphosphorylation. We induced overexpression or inhibition of Myc through transfection of complementary DNA constructs or specific small interfering RNA in PC3 (prostate carcinoma) and HeLa (cervical carcinoma) cells. We have observed that overexpression of Myc causes an increase in 4E-BP1 phosphorylation and activation of protein synthesis. Unexpectedly, we detected a parallel decrease in the phosphorylation level of S6 kinase (in PC3 and HeLa) and AKT (in HeLa). We report evidence that these changes are mediated by an increase in protein phosphatase 2A activity
Variations on the Author
“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
An innovative platform to promote social media literacy in school contexts
In spite of the impressive number of adolescents using social media, only a minority is aware of the risks associated with the use of the Internet. Hate speech, violation of personal rights, psychological attacks, deceiving people with fake accounts, as well as cyberbullying, harassment and insults are some examples of toxic content that can jeopardize adolescent well-being on the Web. Social Media literacy paths in school contexts provide students with the proper defence instruments to face these problems. Furthermore, it is important to underline the role of social media on both the intrinsic and extrinsic motivation of adolescents which has short-and long-term influences when using these virtual environments. However, traditional teaching approaches are not enough to engage students, and the need for innovative learning activities and tools emerges. In this paper we present an online platform specifically designed to support the development of competences related to Information and Data Literacy, Communication and Collaboration and Digital Content Creation. These competences are connected to the most recent versions of the Digital Competence Framework for Citizens, and the Global framework of reference on digital literacy skills promoted by UNESCO. The platform is based on PixelFed, an open-source alternative to Instagram, so that adolescents can practice with an environment they are familiar with. Our platform extends the PixelFed environment with functionalities designed to implement use cases that make students aware of the mechanisms behind social media, such as the use of artificial intelligence algorithms to filter the content they have access to. This platform has been experimented during a pilot run with secondary school students, by proposing them educational activities based on our platform, aimed at educating and supporting students to increase their awareness and counteract the problems that arise within social media
Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis
We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts
We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued
use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation
counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. It is argued that increasingly available digital full text research papers make it possible for citation analysis studies to go beyond what the ISI databases have directly supported and to employ more

New insights on the crustal structure of the eastern black sea basin from long-offset seismic reflection data
Estimating the degree of lithospheric stretching, and identifying the distribution of crustal types, are important elements in oil and gas exploration activity, because this information is used for thermal modelling of hydrocarbon maturation. The Eastern Black Sea Basin (EBSB) is a frontier basin for hydrocarbon exploration, but the deep-water setting (∼2200 m) and the presence of a thick sedimentary sequence (∼10 km) limit conventional seismic imaging. The EBSB is considered to be partially underlain by oceanic crust, but the distribution of crustal types and the structures accommodating the stretching are still poorly known. We use long-offset reflection seismic data, acquired in 2011 by Geology Without Limits and ION GXT, to image key elements of rift-basin settings such as thinned continental crust, tilted fault-blocks, syn- and post-kinematic sequences, the top of the acoustic basement and Moho. We differentiate the basement by examining seismic reflectivity patterns as an indicator of crustal type. We interpret variations in basement morphology to indicate the presence of a continent-ocean transition of enigmatic nature. This information will be used to further investigate the nature and thickness of the crust and to provide insights into mechanisms of continental extension and rifting in back-arc settings

We have done our best to complete the author checklist relating to the use of animals in the hut study. Note that the objective for the hut study was to evaluate the IRS treatment applications for residual efficacy against Anopheles mosquitoes, including the local An. coluzzii mosquito population. Cows were only used to attract mosquitoes into the huts and no tests were carried out directly on the cows. The author checklist is intended for use with studies where experiments are carried out on animals, which is why we have had such difficulty in completing this for the hut study, as many of the questions do not relate to how the cows were used
