Long-term memories of developed and emerging markets: Using the scaling analysis to characterize their stage of development
The scaling properties encompass in a simple analysis many of the volatility characteristics of financial markets. That is why we use them to probe the different degree of markets development. We empirically study the scaling properties of daily Foreign Exchange rates, Stock Market indices and fixed income instruments by using the generalized Hurst approach. We show that the scaling exponents are associated with characteristics of the specific markets and can be used to differentiate markets in their stage of development. The robustness of the results is tested by both Monte-Carlo studies and a computation of the scaling in the frequency-domain.Scaling exponents; Time series analysis; Multi-fractals

A Monte Carlo EM Algorithm for the Estimation of a Logistic Auto-logistic Model with Missing Data
This paper proposes an algorithm for the estimation of the parameters of a Logistic Auto-logistic Model when some values of the target variable are missing at random but the auxiliary information is known for the same areas. First, we derive a Monte Carlo EM algorithm in the setup of maximum pseudo-likelihood estimation; given the analytical intractability of the conditional expectation of the complete pseudo-likelihood function, we implement the E-step by means of Monte Carlo simulation. Second, we give an example using a simulated dataset. Finally, a comparison with the standard non-missing data case shows that the algorithm gives consistent results.Spatial Missing Data, Monte Carlo EM Algorithm, Logistic Auto-logistic Model, Pseudo-Likelihood.
The author analyzes the labour consequences of the succession between entrepreneurs, starting from a recognition of the various types of outsourcing with the related needs and main critical issues.
The survey focuses primarily on the transfer of businesses, examining European legislation and case-law and then moving on to internal legislation, trade union procedures and a specific focus on the transfer of companies in crisis.
The author then dwells on the contract, taking into account in particular the indications of authenticity, the criteria of distinction from the illicit administration of labour and the protection of workers in the event of turnover between companies.
Finally, the research deepens the "social clauses", both first and second generation, assessing their compatibility with European law and with the constitution and reflecting on possible remedies in case of their violation

The Correspondence of Clavius, Dal Monte, Magini and other Italian astronomers on the Nova of 1604
From the preface of Patrick J. Boner (p.15): "In [this] contribution, Matteo Cosci surveys the many scholars in Italy who exchanged letters about the 'new stars' of 1604. While the scope of his study centers on Cristoph Clavius (1538-1612), Cosci examines the records of several other sources, including one of the earliest observers of the 'new star' whom he he identifies for the first time as Andrea Argoli (1570-1657). Cosci concludes with the work of Magini, another focal point in 'the sprawling network of scientific exchange' whose observations and planetary tables proved indispensable for Kepler.
Avalanching glaciers may be affected by periodic or occasional falls of ice (by breaking-off mechanism) giving rise to tragic events. These events have been rising the interest in the instability of avalanching glaciers. This contribution comes into this context. In summer 2003 a big fracture was observed on the North wall of Punta S. Matteo (Forni Glacier, Ortles-Cevedale Group, Italy). As this phenomenon developed a big unstable ice-mass, starting form May 2005, it was decided to survey Monte S. Matteo avalanching glacier (whose fall could involve the West sector of Forni Glacier thus representing an actual hazard for climbers, tourists, skiers and trekkers). The monitoring campaign consisted in collecting photographs (from May 2005 to March 2007) and in surveying the ice mass by total station (from July 2005 to November 2005). In addition, in May 2005 a laser scanner surveys was performed. The collected photographs made it possible to draw the evolution of this unstable ice-mass. Data acquired with total station permitted to calculate displacement, velocities and flow direction of the unstable ice-mass. The laser scanner survey permitted to calculate the volume of the unstable ice-mass. Furthermore the role of air temperature conditions in the ice-mass evolution was also investigated
Muscle belly gearing positively affects the force-velocity and power-velocity relationships during explosive dynamic contractions
Changes in muscle shape could play an important role during contraction allowing to circumvent some limits imposed by the fascicle force-velocity (F-V) and power-velocity (P-V) relationships. Indeed, during low-force high-velocity contractions, muscle belly shortening velocity could exceed muscle fascicles shortening velocity, allowing the muscles to operate at higher F-V and P-V potentials (i.e., at a higher fraction of maximal force/power in accordance to the F-V and P-V relationships). By using an ultrafast ultrasound, we investigated the role of muscle shape changes (vastus lateralis) in determining belly gearing (muscle belly velocity/fascicle velocity) and the explosive torque during explosive dynamic contractions (EDC) at angular accelerations ranging from 1000 to 4000°.s-2. By means of ultrasound and dynamometric data, the F-V and P-V relationships both for fascicles and for the muscle belly were assessed. During EDC, fascicle velocity, belly velocity, belly gearing, and knee extensors torque data were analysed from 0 to 150 ms after torque onset; the fascicles and belly F-V and P-V potentials were thus calculated for each EDC. Absolute torque decreased as a function of angular acceleration (from 80 to 71 Nm, for EDC at 1000 and 4000°.s-1, respectively), whereas fascicle velocity and belly velocity increased with angular acceleration (P < 0.001). Belly gearing increased from 1.11 to 1.23 (or EDC at 1000 and 4000°.s-1, respectively) and was positively corelated with the changes in muscle thickness and pennation angle (the changes in latter two equally contributing to belly gearing changes). For the same amount of muscle's mechanical output (force or power), the fascicles operated at higher F-V and P-V potential than the muscle belly (e.g., P-V potential from 0.70 to 0.56 for fascicles and from 0.65 to 0.41 for the muscle belly, respectively). The present results experimentally demonstrate that belly gearing could play an important role during explosive contractions, accommodating the largest part of changes in contraction velocity and allowing the fascicle to operate at higher F-V and P-V potentials
Ultra Low Carbon Vehicles: New Parameters for Automotive Design
As the influence of vehicle emissions on our environment has become better understood, the UK government has recently placed urgent emphasis on the implementation of low carbon
technologies in the automotive industry through: the UK Low Carbon Industrial Strategy. The overall objective is to offer big incentives to consumers and support for the development of infrastructure and engineering solutions. This scheme however does not consider how the development of functional and experiential user value might drive consumer demand, contributing to the adoption of low carbon vehicles (LCVs) in the mass market.
With the emergence of the North East of England as the UK’s first specialised region for the development of ultra-low carbon vehicles (ULCVs), ONE North East, as a development agency for the region's economic and business development, and Northumbria University Ideas-lab have supported a project to facilitate innovation through the collaboration of technology, research and development (R&D) and business. The High Value Low Carbon (HVLC) project aims to envisage
new user value made possible by the integration of low carbon vehicle platforms with new process and network technologies. The HVLC consortium represents vehicle manufacturers and their suppliers as well as technology based companies and through an ongoing process of design concept generation the project offers a hub for innovation led enterprise.
Whilst new technological developments in areas such as power generation, nano materials, hydrogen fuel cells, printed electronics and networked communications will all impact on future automotive design, the mass adoption of low carbon technologies represents a paradigm shift for the motorist. This paper aims to describe how the mapping of new parameters will lead to new transport scenarios that will create the space for new collaborative research on user experiences supported by innovative technologies and related services
