Potential allelochemicals from Pistia stratiotes L.
Among the substances isolated from ethyl ether extract of Pistia stratiotes L., linoleic acid, γ-linolenic acid, (12R,9Z,13E,15Z)-l2-hydroxy- 9,13,15-octadecatrienoicacid, (9S,10E,12Z,15Z)-9-hydroxy-10,12,15-octadecatrienoic acid, α-asarone, and 24S-ethyl-4,22-cholestadiene-3,6-dione were found to inhibit the growth of some microalgae in solid medium. Toxicity of α-asarone on the growth of sensitive algal strains in liquid medium is discussed. © 1991 Plenum Publishing Corporation
The contribution concerns the presentation of the intentions and preliminary results of the SPHeritage 2019 project, funded by the Italian Ministry of University and Research. Partitioning of bronchopulmonary carcinoids in two different prognostic categories by Ki-67 score
Introduction: Histological distinction between typical and atypical bronchopulmonary car- cinoids is based on mitotic activity and necrosis. Regardless of these two parameters, outcome after surgery is often unpredictable. In this study the prognostic value of different clinico-pathological factors was retrospectively analyzed in a large series of patients with bronchopulmonary carcinoid. Materials and Methods: The long-term post-surgical out- come of 106 radically treated patients affected by bronchopulmonary carcinoid from two Italian centers was correlated with tumor characteristics assessed by combining conven- tional histology with a panel of immunohistochemical markers of neuroendocrine differen- tiation (chromogranin-A, NSE) and proliferation activity (Ki-67 score). Results: Carcinoids were assessed as typical (TC = 75; 70.8%) and atypical (AC = 31; 29.2%). Mean follow-up was 8.3 years (range: 0-20; median: 8.0). All cases expressed neuroendocrine markers. At univariate analysis, tumor recurrence [14/75 TC (18.7%), 15/31 AC (48.4%)] correlated with carcinoid histotype (P = 0.003), tumor size (P = 0.012), mitotic index (P = 0.044), Ki-67 score (P < 0.0001), and synchronous node metastasis (P = 0.037). Of these, Cox multivari- ate analysis confirmed only Ki-67 score as independent predictor of disease recurrence (P = 0.009). The best cut-off for Ki-67 score (calculated by ROC curves) discriminating recurrent vs non-recurrent disease was 4% (sensitivity 79.3%; specificity 83.8%; area under the curve 0.85). By stratifying patients according to this cut-off, a significantly dif- ferent disease-free survival was found (log-rank test P < 0.0001). Conclusion: Ki-67 score accurately separates bronchopulmonary carcinoids in two well-distinct histo-prognostic categories. Ki-67 score predicts the patients outcome better than mitotic count, histotype, and tumor stage and it is therefore helpful in establishing the appropriate follow-up. © 2011 Grimaldi, Muser, Beltrami, Machin, Morelli, Pizzolitto, Talmassons, Marciello, Colao, Monaco, Monaco and Faggiano

In vitro algal growth inhibition by phytotoxins of Typha latifolia L.
The ether extract of Typha latifolia L. inhibited the growth of some microalgae. Among the substances chromatographically isolated and characterized from the ether extract, three steroids [β-sitosterol, (20S) 24-methylenlophenol, and stigmast-4-ene-3,6-dione] and three fatty acids [α- linolenic, linoleic, and an unidentified C8:2] were found to inhibit the growth of some microalgae tested. A selective effect of these substance on blue-green algae (particularly on T 625 Synechococcus leopoliensis and on T 1444 Anabaena flosaquae) was observed. © 1990 Plenum Publishing Corporation

Fondazioni e interessi generali in Italia
Dopo aver rilevato la crescente importanza delle fondazioni quali enti che perseguono interessi generali nei paesi europei, si sono esaminate le varie tipologie di fondazioni c.d. " statuto speciale" in Italia.
Shear models of Rc-encased steel joist beams in MRFs
This study presents the application of different analytical and finite element (FE) models aimed at predicting the shear resistance of reinforced concrete (RC) and reinforced concrete-encased steel joist (HRCESJ) beams with inclined transversal reinforcement in moment resisting frames (MRFs). In particular, four analytical models are taken into account, two of them specifically conceived for HRCESJ beams in seismic area. The analytical models considered are Eurocode-2 model for the shear strength of RC beams; a variable-inclination stress-field approach; a strut-and-tie additive model and, finally, an analytical formulation in which the shear capacity depends on the number of pairs of inclined stirrups able to yield before concrete crushing. The models are validated against a large experimental and FE dataset covering a wide range of characteristic parameters of the beam typology. The results obtained are discussed in order to stress the influence of different key assumptions adopted in both FE and analytical approaches
