    Chemical recognition of prey in Liolaemus ceii (Donoso-Barros, 1971)

    The order Squamata is divided into two broad groups: Scleroglossa and Iguania based on the main sensory modality (visual or chemical) they use to explore and interpret the environment. The first clade is characterised by the presence of chemical recognition of prey while Iguania presents visual ambush. Liolaemus, is the second most diverse genus in Iguania with more than 250 spp. L. lemniscatus and L. pictus, both presents chemical recognition of prey, while L. zapallarensis does not. In this work, we report a video register of L. ceii showing an Iguanian lizard, that localised its prey without to use its vision. This fact indicates that L. ceii presents chemical recognition of prey, similar to L. leminscatus and L. pictus. We are opening numerous possibilities to future investigation lines and we suggest the reformulation of the traditional division in Squamata.Fil: Ruiz Monachesi, Mario Ricardo.     Meta-analysis of Behavioural Research in Lizards Reveals that Viviparity Contributes Better to Animal Personality than Secretory Glands

    Animal personality refers to consistent individual differences across contexts, ecological situations, and/or time. To understand the evolution of animal personality, it is crucial that macroevolutionary patterns be integrated with intraspecific promoters of individual behavioural consistency. In this study, we conducted a meta-analysis to assess the association between animal personality and different indicators of sociability (a personality evolution driver) in a phylogenetic context. In lizards, higher sociability levels have been associated with the presence of secretory glands and viviparity. We analysed behavioural repeatability data from 62 studies, comprising 486 effect sizes, across 37 species, encompassing five categories (activity, aggressiveness, boldness, exploration, sociability), while accounting for phylogenetic constraints. For each species, we gathered data on the number of secretory glands and the reproductive mode (oviparous or viviparous). Results showed similar values of repeatability for species with and without glands and an absence of correlation between the number of glands and repeatability data. However, viviparous species exhibited higher repeatability compared to oviparous species. When conducting separate analyses for each behavioural type, we observed for boldness that species with glands presented higher repeatability in boldness behaviour. Notably, phylogeny played a variable role in shaping repeatability patterns; specifically, only activity and aggressiveness, and to some extent boldness, were influenced by evolutionary history across species. This study underscores the diverse animal personality patterns existing within a broader comparative macroevolutionary framework.     Revalidation of Liolaemus choique Abdala, Quinteros, Scrocchi & Stazzonelli, 2010(Iguania: Liolaemidae)

    The description of Liolaemus choique was based on an exhaustive morphological diagnosis. However, a posterior phylogeographic study suggested that it would be a junior synonym of L. smaug. Herein, we present morphological behavioral and distributional data indicating that L. choique would be considered as a valid species.     Personality differences between sexes are present in a peaceful lizard, but not in an aggressive one: a chemical communication trial in two Liolaemus species

    Animal personality can be defined as behavioral individual consistency across contexts and time, and sociability may facilitate it. Boldness and exploration can be considered as social conflictive behaviors and in lizards, social scent can either diminish or promote social conflicts. We studied boldness and exploration in Liolaemus albiceps Lobo and Laurent, 1995 and Liolaemus coeruleus Cei and Ortiz, 1983, and tested whether Liolaemus albiceps, a lesser aggressive species, presents higher individual consistency in a socially nonconflictive behavior, such as escape (boldness). We also expect Liolaemus coeruleus, a moreaggressive species, to present higher individual consistency in exploration, which is socially more conflictive behavior. We exposed lizards to their own conspecifics and control scent treatments.We calculated the repeatability for boldness and exploration, analyzed their correlation, and tested for behavioral plasticity. Boldness and exploration were repeatable in Liolaemus albiceps at species level, with females showing highly repeatable boldness, and males, highly repeatable exploration. Liolaemus coeruleus exhibited no significant repeatability for either behavior. There was no correlation between these two behaviors, and both species showed plasticity. Liolaemus albiceps individuals were bolder and explored less under conspecific scents. Liolaemus coeruleus individuals explored less in presence of their own scents than novelty scents, and presented interindividual variation in plasticity. A peaceful lifestyle may favor behavioral consistency within individuals, whereas a more aggressive lifestyle may constrain within and among individual consistency in a chemical communication context.     Solving the Liolaemus bibronii puzzle, an integrative taxonomy approach: Redescription of L. bibronii and description of three new species (Iguania: Liolaemidae)

    We redescribe Liolaemus bibronii and describe three new species of Liolaemus, a genus of lizards distributed across South America. These species belong to the L. alticolor-bibronii group, which are included in the subgenus Liolaemus s.s. Liolaemus bibronii was previously proposed as a species complex, but many populations initially assigned to this complex were described as valid species. The three new species described here were populations denominated under L. bibronii. In order to validate the new species, we apply an integrative approach, including molecular and morphological evidence. Also, we perform phylogenetic analyses applying parsimony and Bayesian inference. The three new species described here show a set of character states that allow them to be distinguished from L. bibronii, from each other and from all other species of Liolaemus. Our phylogenies show that the newly described species are more related to other species than to L. bibronii.     Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

    The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed

    Testing the functionality of lipids from feces in the conspecific recognition of the weeping lizard, Liolaemus chiliensis

    Pheromones, a mix of proteins and lipids, are involved in lizards’ conspecific recognition. In our study, we specifically address whether fecal lipids are involved in conspecific recognition of the Weeping Lizard, Liolaemus chiliensis. The feces of each sex were dissolved in n-hexane to isolate their lipidic fraction. We then exposed individuals of both sexes of L. chiliensis to the lipidic fractions of each sex and a control (n-hexane), recording their responses. Lizards of both sexes were more active when exposed to the lipids from male than from female feces or from the control, suggesting that the lipidic fraction of male feces conveys some information for conspecific recognition. There was, however, no further evidence of recognition, and herein we offer possible explanations for this low responsiveness to the fecal lipidic fractions.Fil: Valdecantos, Maria Soledad.
