    Fishing and habitat area for the sea cucumber Isostichopus fuscus (Ludwig, 1875) in the Galapagos Marine Reserve

    The sea cucumber (Isostichopus fuscus) fishery was the most important in the Galapagos Marine Reserve (GMR) in the 2000s. However, after sustained over-fishing that has limited its recovery capacity, this small-scale fishery is nowadays commercially collapsed in the Galapagos. Under that scenario, the Galapagos National Park (GNP) called for total closure from 2016 to 2021. At the end of this period, if the fishery is re-opened, a total allowed catch must be established on the basis of the calculation of the species abundance. In order to estimate the abundance, a spatially explicit fishing and habitat area model was created within the boundaries of the GMR. This model was created on the basis of the ecology of the species (mostly found on rocky bottoms) and the diving depth limits (from 0 to 30 m). We considered benthic cover data from two sources, the sea-cucumber monitoring program data and the cover estimated from video data at 344 locations scattered throughout the GMR. We then filled the remaining areas with remote sensing habitat classification data. All areas not covered by the previous sources of information were assumed to be rocky bottoms. Since mangrove forests (Moity et al., 2018, 2019) are not an optimal habitat for I. fuscus, we removed them from the model. We also removed the no-take zones (Zoning 2000, Moity, 2018a, 2018b) since no fishing is allowed in those areas. The total fishing and habitat area for I. fuscus was calculated in 272.1 km2. The resulting data set is a GIS layer in ArcGIS shapefile format, EPSG 32715 (WGS 1984/UTM Zone 15S) and a Google Earth layer in KMZ format. The layers include attribute information on the fishing area name (Fishing_ID), benthic cover (Benthic_co) and area (Area_km2, in square km). This dataset will be of most utility for the calculation of the abundance for I. fuscus in the GMR. It also ensures reproducibility and further analysis since it provides for a consistent use of fishing and habitat boundaries for this species in the GMR. References: Moity, N. et al.     Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

    The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed.     No-Take Zones in the Galapagos Marine Reserve, Zoning plan 2000

    The Galapagos Marine Reserve (GMR) was created to protect the exceptional marine biodiversity it supports. It is a multi-use protected area where artisanal fishing, tourism and conservation are the main uses. In order to spatially regulate the different uses and ensure the conservation of the biodiversity, the first Zoning plan was created in 2000 classifying the coastline in sectors according to management/use subzones (fishing, tourism and conservation). Yet, no indication was stated as of how to resolve conflictive areas where several uses overlapped. To date, no study has addressed this issue despite the fact that the reserve has been in place for 20 years. This has created confusions in the compliance and enforcement of the reserve boundaries and complicates the calculation and analysis of take and no-take zones within the reserve. Here, I provide an interpretation of the subzoning of the reserve in order to resolve each of the conflictive areas following an objective set of rules which eventually allows the calculation of the areas open to fishing and the no-take zones. The resulting data set is a GIS layer (in ArcGIS shapefile format) of the GMR Zoning 2000 for the No-Take Zones (i.e. tourism and conservation). While a new Zoning plan is about to be effective soon, studies attempting to compare the effect of Take and No-Take Zones on target species and on the conservation of biodiversity during the 16-year period that the Zoning plan 2000 was in place as well as comparing Zoning 2000 with the new Zoning plan will benefit from this Dataset.     The Galapagos coastal area is the most studied of the Galapagos Marine Reserve (GMR) and also the most vulnerable to impacts since it is where the greatest part of human activities takes place (fishing, tourism, leisure, etc.). Edgar et al. (2004) analysed shallow subtidal rocky reef coastal biodiversity data (fish and macro-invertebrate communities) collected in 2000-2001 in order to derive regional biogeography areas. Sampling units consisted of 50 m x 10 m line transects for fish and 50 m x 2 m line transects for macro-invertebrate species (sea cucumbers, sea urchins, octopus, lobsters, large gastropods, etc.) at various depths between - 2 and - 20 m and distributed along the coastal subtidal area of 50 islands and islets of the Galapagos. A multivariate analysis of the data resulted in the identification of three major biogeographical regions: the Far-northern islands of Darwin and Wolf; the Central-south-eastern islands, including the east coast of Isabela; and the Western region, comprising Fernandina and the west coast of Isabela. The Central-south-eastern region could be further divided in two, namely the Northern region, including the islands of Pinta, Marchena and Genovesa; and the Central-south-eastern region, including the islands of Santiago, Rábida, Pinzón, Santa Cruz, Baltra, Santa Fe, San Cristóbal, Floreana, Española and the eastern side of Isabela. Another region could be further identified in the Western region, the Elizabeth region, covering an area comprising the Bolivar channel and Urbina and Elizabeth bays down to Punta Moreno in Isabela and Punta Mangle in Fernandina. Edgar et al.'s study is one of the most cited marine studies in the Galapagos. However, the authors only included a small scale map and a written description of the bioregions geographical limits within the GMR but did not include a detailed paper or digital map. Here, I provide an interpretation of the bioregions identified in Edgar et al.'s study based on the figure and the descriptions included in it. The resulting data set is a GIS layer in ArcGIS shapefile format, EPSG 32715 (WGS 1984/UTM Zone 15S) and a Google Earth layer in KMZ format of the GMR shallow subtidal rocky reef bioregions based on fish and macro-invertebrate data. The layers include attribute information on bioregion name and area (in square km). This dataset will be of most utility to those attempting to use Edgar et al.'s Galapagos bioregions in their analyses since it provides for a consistent use of bioregion boundaries.     “Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship

    Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis

    We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature.     Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts

    We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. It is argued that increasingly available digital full text research papers make it possible for citation analysis studies to go beyond what the ISI databases have directly supported and to employ more sophisticated methods

    We have done our best to complete the author checklist relating to the use of animals in the hut study. Note that the objective for the hut study was to evaluate the IRS treatment applications for residual efficacy against Anopheles mosquitoes, including the local An. coluzzii mosquito population. Cows were only used to attract mosquitoes into the huts and no tests were carried out directly on the cows. The author checklist is intended for use with studies where experiments are carried out on animals, which is why we have had such difficulty in completing this for the hut study, as many of the questions do not relate to how the cows were used
