    Total Factor Productivity in the Malaysian Resource-Based Industries

    This paper will focus on the issues of total factor productivity growth (TFPG) for both 3 and 5-digit level and the performance of resource-based industries (RBIs) in Malaysia for the period 1981-1997. By using the neoclassical Cobb-Douglas production function and traditional growth accounting methodology (Solow-residual) with time discrete Tornqvist weighted value share index, the TFPG estimation for both classifications shows an interesting pattern in terms of sign and fundamental composition. The development of RBIs during the period under study is mostly input driven (moving towards a capital intensive industry), where supply effect of unskilled labour assimilates to the underlying value added growth over time.Resource based industry in Malaysia; total factor productivity

    Sensor technologies are common in the past for collecting information about specific environment but nowadays wireless sensor network are getting popular and widespread used in every sector. A wireless sensor network is characterized by number of sensor nodes distributed in the field to monitor certain environment parameter. Usually these tiny sensor nodes are powered by small battery. Due to the limited energy capacity, power efficiency is a big challenge to maintain the availability of the network. Some of the network characteristic and behavior has a direct impact on the network lifetime. Configuring the optimal parameters is vital for sensor nodes to handle energy resource efficiently. This research studies the parameters that most significantly impact the energy consumption and find their correlation and trade offs with respect to network lifetime. In this research the trade offs were investigated in detail in various combinations. To fulfill this objective a discrete simulation tool OMNeT++ (with MiXiM framework) has been chosen to model and simulate the real environment of the sensor nodes. Using this tool the correlation of the selected parameters with regards to network lifetime has been analyzed. Finally, results of extensive simulation are presented and hopefully can become guidance for the sensor network designers to optimally configuring the correct parameters for prolonged network lifetime

    Roof trusses are important to bridge the space above a room and to support the roof of a building. This report was conducted for the building construction of steel truss for 2 storey link houses at Antara Gapi, Selangor. The objective of this report is to identify the method of steel truss construction. The focus was on how the steel truss were constructed and fabricated. It also determines the equipment used for installation and fabrication of steel truss on this site. The methods used to complete this report requires observation on the work carried on this site and interview sessions with related individuals. Main findings were the steel truss were easier to use and more economic also the construction procedure is easier compared to the wood truss

    Portable respiration monitoring system (PRMS) is a biomedical instrument which is used to sense the respiration rate of on infant or sickly adult. PRMS are designed to sense breathing and to trigger visual and sound alarms when certain length of time elapses without the detection of a breath. In this project the respiration rate is detected using a thermistor placed in front of nostril. As the patiënt breathes, cool air enters the lungs, is warmed by the body, and is expelled. When air passes over the thermistor, changes in temperature affect its electrïcal resistance and register as breaths. This signal is amplified for the first stage by using a preamplifier and the unwanted signal is then filtered. The clean signal is amplified again. The amplified signal is compared to a certain reference voltage at the input of a comparator. The output of this comparator is now inpulseform which isfedto the counter and alarm circuit. The main advantage of using this method is that, there is no motion artifacts. In this design PRMS also provides a digital display for the respiration rat

    Kajian pelaksanaan kemudahan sokongan rekreasi di Pantai Sepat Kuantan Pahang ialah bertujuan untuk menjadikan kawasan tersebut sebagai kawasan rekreasi utama masyarakat dengan menyediakan keperluan dan kemudahan yang mencukupi. Terdapat lima peringkat pendekatan kajian yang digunakan dalam kajian ini iaitu peringkat pendahuluan di mana ianya menjelaskan pemahaman tentang cara untuk mencapai matlamat dan objektif serta skop kajian yang hendak dikaji bagi menangani isu masalah di kawsan kajian. Peringkat kajian teoritikal iaitu peringkat dua yang akan memantapkan pengetahuan tentang kajian berkaitan dengan definasi, fungsi rekreasi dan sebagainya. Seterusnya bab tiga, kawasan kajian yang menerangkan tentang latar belakang kawasan kajian, gunatanah kawasan kajian serta isu-isu yang terdapat di kawasan kajian. Peringkat seterusnya pula ialah peringkat ke empat iaitu iaitu peringkat metodologi dan analisis. Metodologi adalah bertujuan untuk mendapatkan maklumat kawasan kajian yang merangkumi dua kaedah pengumpulan data primer iaitu kaedah pengamatan kawasan kajian dan kaji selidik yang meliputi soal selidik pengunjung kawasan rekreasi Pantai Sepat. Seterusnya peringkat menganalisis data. Peringkat ini dilakukan bagi mengenalpasti isu dan potensi di kawasan kajian. Pada peringkat cadangan iaitu peringkat terakhir, segala isu dan masalah yang telah dikenalpasti dalam peringkat analisis akan diatasi dengan mengemukakan cadangan untuk mengatasi. Penemuan daripada kajian mendapati bahawa masalah kekurangan penyediaan kemudahan sokongan, kemudahan rekreasi dan kemudahan kebolehsampaian golongan orang kurang upaya

    Urban development in Malaysia is inseparable from its existence, which began on the river banks. The design of river banks often changes with time and the level of urbanization. As a result, the physical environment of the river bank will indirectly affect the identity of the place. In fact, the revitalization that has been done able to establish the identity of the area. Relationship functional and emotional elements between human and place create meaning, this process is known as place attachment. Physical changes that occur results in a change of meaning and place attachment may decrease gradually. In the context of urban design, some discussions led to the physical element of interest and activity to develop place identity and atmosphere, but a study of open space areas have received less attention. The aim of this study is to verify the ability of place attachment and the factors that influence user’s perception in the context of open space on the waterfronts in Malaysia. Furthermore, to find out the cause (causal) between the places attachments, meaning the place and the characteristics that influence the level of public engagement. The objectives identified in this study are; (i) to determine the form of emotional and functional attachment of open space or place in the development of the waterfront; (ii) to identify the reasons that affect the place attachment especially on the meaning and importance of the place; (iii) to identify the level of place attachment with the user’s roles in the open spaces and; (iv) to identify the characteristics of open space along the waterfront, which influences by user’s engagement. A mixture of qualitative and quantitative approach are used in this research and covers two main areas of urban design and environmental psychology. Surveys and in-depth interviews conducted with users of selected two study areas, namely Kuching Waterfront (KW) in Sarawak and Lumut Waterfront (LW) in Perak. Observation’s also been used to obtain the physical and visual characteristics. The results showed that the place attachment is influencing users perception of public space at the river bank. Besides its physical quality, the place is also known for attachment and its significance to the user. Results from the study show several factors that influence the form and the level of engagement of the attachment, user familiarity with the place, place dependency, user background, and role. Therefore, this study contributes to human relationship with the place and give importance implications to urban planners, urban designers, and architects to create a better and well-organized place

    Automobile air-conditioning teaching kit (R-134a system) / Ismarullizam Mohd Ismail

    In this project, our main objective is to produce a training rig for the following automobile air-conditioning systems viz, the R134a and R12 system as a teaching kit. Besides that, we have to learn about the installation and inspection of both of these systems. On this project, we started by disassembling and overhauling the R-12 and R134a systems with the right tools. Servicing the parts give us knowledge about the parts, their functions, and their designs. Reassembling back all the parts and components is one of the more important aspects of this work. One has to prevent carelessness in putting back all the parts. The air-conditioning system can be mounted on the frame and will be tested for its performance. Lastly, a design of the rig to run under both systems have been carried out. Construction of the prototype rig costs approximately RM 6000 and took one year to design and fabricate. The completed rig has been assembled with a panel board showing the principle operation of these systems which are mounted on the frame, and an operations manual which included a description on servicing, overhauling and trouble diagnosis needs of the systems has been produced. The benefits of this project are that we learn not only its operation, but the servicing, overhauling and inspection of the R- 12 & R134a systems as well

    In the past years, computer-assisted methods have become more and more accepted in the fields of orthopedic surgical treatments. This trend has been encouraged by the needs of more automated and digitized forms of aids to be used in the operation theater and also to assist pre-operation planning. Surgeons have long practiced using exhaustive methods and now seeking other tools to enhance their skills which will hopefully reduce traumas and produce better post-surgical outcomes. The emergence of high performance computing and graphics hardware changed the way medical data were analyzed. The development of virtual medical simulators has allowed healthcare providers to practice procedure without real dire consequence and establish skills, standards, and optimizations before actual surgery. An ideal medical simulation system will integrate the component of visualization, automated model generation, surgery simulation, and surgery assistance into one system. This thesis project aims to meet these criterion in developing a system specifically designed for implant fitting procedures in the human femoral anatomy. Three-dimensional model acquired from past researches will be manipulated using the software Geomagic Studio Version 5.0 and Rhinoceros 3.0 to build a customs-fitted implant model, which strives to be beneficial to the surgery procedures, as well as the parties involved; medical practitioners and patients alike

    Preparation of biomineral filler and its application as biopolymer composite filler / Nur Damia Mohd Ismail

    Lokan shell powder (LP), which is the source of biomineral Calcium Carbonate (CaCO3) has been incorporated into a biopolymer, PLA to produce thin film biocomposites. The incorporation of LP has been affecting the mechanical properties, crystallization and porosity of the PLA matrix. With the addition of LP , the stiffness of the composite was found to be increase significantly. In term of crystallization, the percentage of crystallinity decrease with the addition of LP and show significant drop at 8wt% filler content. FESEM result clearly showed the decrease in size and number of pores when LP is added to PLA matrix

    Public facilities are an important element in the management of leisure and recreation. This is important to avoid various problems that may arise due to lack of public facilities. In addition, this research is to improve the public facilities and the needs of the community at Recreational Park for a long period of time. The importance of providing public facilities for the social enhancement, intellectual and quality of life of the economy. This study was conducted at Sungai Kapeh Recreational Park, Segamat. , the issue of study area is improve recreational facilities. In fact, there are lack of public facilities and lack of activities in the study area. In addition, questionnaires are used in this research to obtain data on data collection in the study area. The questionnaire are distributed among 52 respondent of park users. Other than that, the data also collected through survey form and observation. The results showed that public facilities are essential for the convenience and comfort of the community. Public facilities must be maintained and monitored by the authorities in order to avoid damage by the users and for long periods of time. The proposal to solve the problem in the study area is to improve existing public facilities, while the second proposal is to provide more facilities and more activities in the study area to attract visitors to come
