Footwear and socks play a crucial role in sports performance, particularly in agility and speed. Given the high incidence of ankle sprains in futsal, exploring ways to enhance stability is essential [1]. This study compares the effects of anti-slip socks and standard socks on agility and speed among UiTM Negeri Sembilan futsal players to determine their impact on performance. This experimental study involved 24 male UiTM Negeri Sembilan futsal players (aged 19–24). Speed and agility were assessed using the 30-meter sprint and Illinois agility test. Each participant completed both tests wearing standard socks first, with a 10-minute rest between trials. After a one-day recovery, the tests were repeated with anti-slip socks to compare performance differences

Effect of Various Sizes of Calcined Marsh Clam Shell on Phosphate Removal from Aqueous Solution

    No full text
Phosphorus is one of essential elements for sustaining life largely through phosphate, a compound containing the phosphate ion, PO4 3−. However, excessive phosphorus concentrations will cause eutrophication and this condition is considered as an environmental issue. The phosphorus sources are commonly from human activities; for instance, detergents, fertilisers, and industries. Although various adsorption techniques have been applied to remove phosphorus in water, the effect of different particle sizes of calcined marsh clam shells on phosphate removal has not been fully investigated, along with its adsorption kinetics and isotherms. This study investigates phosphate removal from synthetic solution onto calcined marsh clam shells (CMCs) with 5 different particle sizes: 0.075–0.15, 0.15–0.30, 0.30–0.60, 0.60–1.18, and 1.18–2.36 mm. The batch experiment used 2 g of adsorbent and synthetic potassium dihydrogen phosphate (KH2PO4) solution. The adsorbent size of 0.075 to 0.15 mm showed the highest removal (100%) efficiency due to high adsorption rate. The experimental data were further analysed using kinetics and isotherm models; the data fitted well with pseudo-secondorder kinetic model (R2 = 0.9986) and Freundlich isotherm model (R2 = 0.8404). The potential of marsh clam shells as an adsorbent for phosphate removal in water is significant for future applications in wastewater treatment technology

Preeclampsia patients have frequently been found to experience hyperuricaemia and this may result in poor outcomes compared to those with normal uric acid levels. This study aimed to determine the relationship of hyperuricaemia in pre-eclampsia patients with foetal and maternal outcomes. This prospective cohort study involved 79 patients in a tertiary centre from year 2016 to 2018. Blood samples were taken antenatally and at the 6th week, post-delivery for renal function including serum uric acid level. Our findings indicate that there was a higher incidence of poor maternal and foetal outcomes in the hyperuricaemia group than the normal uric acid group. Serum uric acid has been shown to be a significant predictor for low birth weight and premature delivery in preeclampsia patients. It was also found that there was a significant negative correlation between uric acid level and antenatal creatinine clearance (rs = −0.338, p = .002). The assessment of the serum uric acid level seems to be important to ensure better outcomes in patients with preeclampsia.Impact statement What is already known on this subject? Preeclampsia is a serious pregnancy-related complication and remains as one of the most important cause of maternal and foetal morbidity and mortality, affecting 2–8% in all pregnancy. Many studies have established the association between hyperuricaemia and preeclampsia. Besides, numerous studies have found that hyperuricaemia contributed to adverse maternal and foetal outcomes. What the results of this study add? There was a significant increase in adverse foetal and maternal outcomes in the hyperuricaemia group compared to the normal uric acid group. This study revealed that serum uric acid remains a significant predictor for low birth weight and premature delivery in preeclampsia patients. What the implications are of these findings for clinical practice and/or further research? Hyperuricaemia does not merely become an indicator for the severity of disease in preeclampsia patients but also indicates adverse foetal outcomes. Large population-based studies are required to establish the absolute maternal and foetal outcomes in patients with hyperuricaemia. Besides, further studies are recommended on long-term implication of hyperuricaemia which is not limited to only during antenatal period

Evidence of Submicroscopic Plasmodium knowlesi Mono-Infection in Remote Indigenous Communities in Kelantan, Peninsular Malaysia

Malaysia has maintained zero cases of indigenous human malaria since 2018. However, zoonotic malaria is still prevalent in underdeveloped areas and hard-to-reach populations. This study aimed to determine the prevalence of malaria among remote indigenous communities in Peninsular Malaysia. A cross-sectional survey was conducted in six settlements in Kelantan state, from June to October 2019. Blood samples were tested for malaria using microscopy and nested polymerase chain reaction (nPCR) targeting the Plasmodium cytochrome c oxidase subunit III (cox3) gene. Of the 1,954 individuals who appeared healthy, no malaria parasites were found using microscopy. However, nPCR revealed seven cases of Plasmodium knowlesi mono-infection (0.4%), and six out of seven infections were in the group of 19 to 40 years old (P = 0.026). No human malaria species were detected by nPCR. Analysis of the DNA sequences also showed high similarity that reflects common ancestry to other P. knowlesi isolates. These findings indicate low submicroscopic P. knowlesi infections among indigenous communities in Malaysia, requiring PCR-based surveillance to support malaria control activities in the country
