    Teacher formative assessment: the missing link in response to intervention

    Response to Intervention (RtI) focuses on the assessment, intervention, and progress monitoring of student academic performance and social behavior. Despite requiring highly-qualified personnel for successful implementation, the implementation of Rtl has not focused on applying its foundational principles towards promoting teacher effectiveness through assessment, intervention, and progress monitoring of teacher classroom practice. Compounding this problem is the lack of availability of reliable and valid teacher assessments to apply in an Rtl model for teacher professional development. This chapter provides a rationale for applying RtI principles to teacher professional development and how teacher formative assessment can improve educator effectiveness, student learning, and social behaviors. The Classroom Strategies Scale (CSS, Reddy & Dudek, 2014), a new multidimensional assessment of instructional and behavioral management practices is discussed as an example of one promising tool for promoting teachers professional development within an Rtl model. We offer a synthesis of the theory, research, and evidence of reliability and validity of the CSS. The application of teacher formative assessment in job-embedded professional development/coaching models for schools is discussed. Finally, implications for practice and research are outlined.Peer reviewe

    The effect of alkali treatment of OPKS filler on mechanical property of polyester-composite

    This paper presents a study on the effect of alkali treatment of Oil Palm Kernel Shell (OPKS) on the mechanical properties ofpolyester composite. The dosage of NaOH in this study is limited to 5wt% concentration.The experiments on mechanical properties investigate the tensile strength, the flexural strength and theflextural modulus of untreated, cold alkali treated and hot alkali treated OPKS reinforced polyester composite. It is found that the alkali treatment improves the mechanical properties of the composite. However, the improvement due tothe hot alkali treatment is significant compared to the cold alkali treatment. The morphology of OPKS and the fracture surface of OPKS composites were investigated using scanning electron microscopy (SEM), showing a rough surface and good interfacial adhesion between OPKS as filler and polyester as a matrix

    'Slippage' : The Bane of Rural Drinking Water Sector (A Study of Extent and Causes in Andhra Pradesh)

    Slippage is one of the main bottlenecks of achieving full coverage of water and sanitation services in India. Slippage is the term often used to reflect unsustainable service delivery of water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH) services, especially in rural areas. Off late slippage is attracting attention at the policy level though slippage is as old as the coverage of water supply services. This paper makes an attempt to identify the causes of slippage in a systematic manner. The broad objectives of the paper include : i) assess the extent of slippage at the national and state level; ii) identify the causes of slippage at various levels; and iii) provide some pointers for policy based on the analysis. The extent of slippage is quite substantial even at the aggregate level. The situation is alarming in some of the states where the extent of slippage is as high as 60 percent. Our analysis at the national, state and habitation levels suggests strongly that policy makers should look beyond the often repeated supply sided strategies. As evident from the experience of Andhra Pradesh, the demand side and governance factors play an equally, if not more, important role in addressing the sustainability issues. So far the experiences are that large investments in water sector would not automatically lead to increase in coverage. The sector also needs a sound policy and capacity so that money is spent effectively and leads to increased water security. The policy should also address resource sustainability and behavioural change goals instead of relying upon a one-sided target driven approach. These aspects are highlighted in the proposed guidelines and their effective implementation needs to be ensured.slippage, India, supply side strategies, policy

    Oil Palm Fibre and Nano-Silica Reinforced Epoxy Composite Material

    This paper presents a study on tensile properties of Nano Silicon Carbide (n-SiC) and oilpalm fibre (OPF) reinforced epoxy composites. The dosage of n-SiC and OPF are limited to 0%, 1%,3% & 5% by mass of the total epoxy material. As a part of the research, experimental study is carriedout on n-SiC and OPF based epoxy composites to investigate the tensile strength of the compositematerial. The utilization of 1% n-SiC& 1% treated OPF shows an improvement in tensile strengthcompared to the pure epoxy. The experimental results are also compared with 3-D finite elementanalysis results and a good agreement is observed between the experimental and the finite elementresults

    Scientometric portrait of Nobel laureate Leland H. Hartwell

    Leland H. Hartwell was honoured with the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine (2001) at his 62 years age and at 41 years of research publishing career. The first contribution of the author was in 1961 at the age of 22. The number of his contributions in a year peaked in 1997 when it touched 8. He had 108 publications during 1961 – 2001 in domains: Molecular Biology of Cell Cycle Regulation (43), Genetics of Cell Division (48), Genomic Re-arrangement and DNA Repair (9), Molecular Genetics of Yeast Cell Fission (5), and Drug Target Interaction (3) which were analysed for authorship pattern with his 101 collaborators. Most active researchers having number of publications with Leland H. Hartwell were : Weinert, T. A. (10), Garvik, B. M. (8), McLaughlin, C. S. (8), Jenness, D. D. (5). His productivity coefficient was 0.76 which clearly indicates that his productivity increased after 50 percentile age. Highest collaboration coefficient (1) for Leland H. Hartwell was found during 1963-1965, 1968-1969, 1977, 1981-1983, 1985-1990, 1996 and 1998-2001. Journals have been the most preferred channel of communication where, as many as 96 papers out of 108 have been published. The core journals publishing his papers were: Cell (14), Genetics (12), Mol. Cell Biol. (8), J. Bactariol. (7), J. Cell Biol. ( 7), Science (7) J. Mol. Biol.(6), Exp. Cell Res. (5), and Proc. Nat. Acad. Sci.(5).     Diagnosis of Multiple-Voltage Design with Bridge Defect

    Multiple voltage is an effective dynamic power reduction design technique commonly used in low-power ICs. To the best of our knowledge, there is no reported work for diagnosing multiple-voltage enabled ICs, and the aim of this paper is to propose a method for diagnosing bridge defects in such ICs. By using synthesized ISCAS benchmarks, with realistic extracted bridges and a parametric fault model, this paper investigates the impact of varying supply voltage on the accuracy of diagnosis and demonstrates how the additional voltage settings can be leveraged to improve the diagnosis resolution through a novel multivoltage diagnosis algorithm. In addition, it also identifies the most useful voltage settings to reduce diagnosis cost by eliminating tests at certain voltage setting using the proposed multivoltage diagnosis approach, thereby achieving high diagnosis accuracy at reduced cost
