No full textIn the present study the newly-identified `Medfly' sex pheromones have been bioassayed. Three olfactometers with airflow and two sizes of horizontal wind-tunnels have been developed. The bioassays without airflow were carried out in a bioassay chamber in the laboratory and the insects were caged with citrus plants in a mating behaviour study in semi-natural conditions. Trapping studies were carried out in a greenhouse, culture rooms, and in citrus orchards of southern Spain.The males of C. capitata (Medfly) release from their abdominal tips a volatile sex pheromone which attracts virgin females. There is a significant correlation between male `calling' and female `landing' which are important components of the sequence of sexual behaviour. The calling male occupies the lower surface of a citrus leaf, releasing sex pheromones, which have two main functions, one is to attract other males to form a `lek' or mating assemblage and the other is to attract females to the `calling' males prior to mating.Experiments were carried out in which medflies of both sexes were exposed to natural pheromones released from live males of the same species and to volatile components of the pheromone formulated in various substrates. Both sexes were also assayed against extracts of males and against various synthetic attractants including the compounds 3,7-dimethyl-1,6-octadiene-3-ol, linalool; 2,5-dimethyl pyrazine; 2,3-dimethyl pyrazine; geranyl acetate; E-2-hexenoic acid; ethyl palmitoleate; α-farnesene, furfuryl alcohol and others. The components were tested singly in various doses, and in various combinations.Some of the above compounds were shown to enhance long-range attraction, inducing females to perform upwind flights toward the source of the attractant, while the other components induced short-range attraction. Certain components, e.g. linalool, elicited specific sexual behaviour from both sexes. Linalool was shown to be a multifunctional sex pheromone component, producing certain sexual responses in both male and female medflies.Preliminary field trials in citrus orchards in southern Spain using vertical white and yellow sticky traps were encouraging in that they demonstrated that, under certain conditions, relatively high catches of males and females could be obtained with linalool acting alone or in combination with other pheromone compounds.</p

Relationship between Nursing Students' Motivation to Learn and Their Competency Self-Efficacy at Secondary Technical Schools of Nursing
No full textAbstract: Motivation to learn and competency self-efficacy(CSE) are two of the most influential factors that affect nursing students academic performance and clinical success. Aim: Investigate the relationship between nursing students' motivation to learn and their competency self-efficacy. Study design: A descriptive correlational research design was utilized to conduct this study. Setting: in 6 schools (3 female- 3male) out of 19 Secondary Nursing Technical Schools in Kafr El-Shikh governorate. Subjects: included Nursing Students in the previously selected settings (n=278) (134 female and 144 male). Tools: Two tools were used to conduct this study: Motivation to learn questionnaire and Nursing competency self-efficacy scale (NCSE). Results: The finding of this study revealed that the vast majority of the studied nursing students had high level of motivation to learn and nursing students had high level of competency self-efficacy. Conclusion: There was high levels of nursing students’ motivation to learn and high levels of competency self-efficacy (CSE). A statistically significant relationship was noticed between motivation to learn and competency self-efficacy. Recommendations: Develop strategies to motivate nursing students to learn and improve their competency self-efficacy.

Studies on the Immunomodulatory Effects of Lactoferrin in Rats Infected with E. coli

Eighty male albino rats of Westar strain (350 ± 10 g), 10 to 12 weeks old were divided into four groups. The groups treated are as following. The first control group (Gp. I) was given intraperitoneally in normal saline (1 mL). The second group (Gp. II) was orally infected with 3 × 1012 CFU of E. coli /Kg. BW. The third group (Gp. III) was infected with E. coli and treated with (0.5%) lactoferrin (LF) 72 hours before E. coli infection in filtered tap water for the duration of the experiment (21 days). The fourth group (Gp. IV) was administrated with LF only (0.5%) in drinking water. Two sepa-rate blood samples were collected from heart puncture at the end of 1st, and 3rd week post-treatment for immunological studies. The Leukogram in E. coli treated group was insignificant compared with the control group while lymphocyto-sis was clear compared with the infected group. Total protein, albumin, α-globulin and β-globulin were insignificantly changed in LF & E. coli treatment group comparing with infected and control groups. TNF-α and γ-globulin are sig-nificantly increased in infected group comparing with other treated groups. In conclusion, lactoferrin has powerful anti-bacterial activity in a variety of ways as well as a safe immunostimulant protein when it is orally administrated
Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
Get PDFThe present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
